City Councillor,
@Labour
DCC Leader & General Election Candidate Dublin South Centra| Day job @ health charity| Pats fan| Hold everything said here against me🙃
Weird couple of days spent wandering around Walkinstown, Drimnagh, Inchicore and Dolphin's Barn with a camera in my face! 🎥 🎬
This is why I'm running to represent Dublin South Central in the General Election (whenever it's called).
Please consider giving me your No.1 vote.
The Globe and The Library Bar on George's Street to make way for..... another hotel.
Planning application available here:
Observations closing date is 7 August.
Dublin is hemorrhaging nightlife spaces and is fast becoming shit craic.
At last night's City Council meeting, I called on DCC Executive to push ahead with the Traffic Plan.
"Economic analysis" carried out on behalf of carpark owners shouldn't deter us from unclogging the quays and giving priority to public transport, walkers, cyclists and taxis.
Thanks to former tenants who came forward to share their story with me.
Evicted from their homes last August as landlord said he intended to sell.
He didn't sell.
Shoved bunk-beds into rooms and let them out on AirBnB.
DCC Planning Enforcement has issued a cessation order.
On Thurs 3 small children & a teacher randomly & viciously stabbed here at Gaelscoil Cholaiste Mhuire. This is pick up time at same school yesterday. For all the hot air and diversions NO lessons have been learned by Govt. NO care or respect. No political accountability.
Chuffed to bits and incredibly proud to be elected to represent my community of Dublin 8.
A huge thank you to every single person who has trusted me with their vote.
Massive thanks to Amy, friends, family,
@labourdubsc
members and lastly,
@RebeccaMoy
and
@hannahmdeasy
.
I'm objecting to the closure of the Globe & Rí Rá.
Dublin is overconcentrated with hotels & tourist accommodation already
Dublin’s cultural fabric and nightlife is dying
Unsustainable uses of land feed our housing/homelessness crisis
My submission here:
So.. I'm going to be co-opted on to Dublin City Council following
@RebeccaMoy
's election to Seanad Éireann. A bit of a mad time for this to be happening but looking forward to representing the South West Inner City. At least there'll be no awkward handshaking for the foreseeable!
At tonight's Local Property Tax Meeting,
@labour
,
@greenparty_ie
and
@SocDems
will propose NOT giving a tax cut to wealthy property owners.
Instead, we would put over €12m back into Area Committee funds for local projects.
SF, FF, FG and Inds. will vote for the tax cut.
Absolutely buzzing for Helen.
Came to Ireland in 2005 in seek of asylum and today is elected a Councillor for
@labour
in Galway - the first ever black woman elected to Galway City Council.
A rejection of the hatred and division we're seeing elsewhere.
Hugely disappointed that DCC has given green light to plop hotel accommodation on top of the Living Room/Murrays/Fibbers beer garden.
The hotel already has 214 rooms and an additional 97 rooms will now replace what is one of the north city-centre's very few beer garden spaces.
Today, Tues 8 March, is the final day to have your say on plans seeking to expand the Holiday Inn Express @ top of O'Connell Street by lobbing 97 hotel rooms on the beer garden space of Living Room/Murrays/Fibbers.

Was struck by some of the brilliant motions & contributions at
#LP21
over the weekend.
A fantastic motion by
@AnneCronin5
simply trying to get
@labour
Cllrs across local authorities on the same page re: cycle lanes, parking on footpaths etc. was diluted. Here was my response 👇
Local Property Tax is the closest thing this country has to a Wealth Tax.
This pandemic has shown us we need to invest more in our city, not less.
Labour and Greens tonight called for a moderate increase to the LPT but all other parties gave a tax cut to well-off homeowners.
34-21, Dublin City Council votes to cut property tax again.
To disprortionately benefit wealthy homeowners, the tax will mean €12m less for the council's funds.
We're already facing a €39m deficit thanks to COVID - we didn't need this on top of it.
Our city is crying out for good quality homes.
The Liberties doesn't need another aparthotel.
This planning application should be refused by
@DubCityCouncil

Great proposal here from
@stoned_takeaway
, with the support of 19/19 premises, for widening of footpaths on Parliament St to assist bars, cafes and restaurants with outside dining.
Will be pushing
@DubCityCouncil
Management to take this on board.
New segregated cycling outside
@CoombeHospital
will hopefully put an end to illegal footpath parking along this stretch.
Fair play
@dccscarea
for installation.
Fine Gael maybe had second thoughts on their now deleted "think of the children" Tweet when it coincided with the release of homeless figures showing 3,342 children are homeless under their watch.
Good call 👍
This is a distraction.
Instead of focusing on yet another racist arson attack, the focus is now shifting to DRHE-bashing.
Racist arsonists are the problem, not the DRHE.
"To overstretched working-class communities, we are making it very clear, we will not be putting new centres into *your* community".
Am I listening to Gavin Pepper or our supposed next Finance Minister?
Shameful and predictable right-wing pandering from Sinn Féin here.
Here's some answers to the questions you've been sending in on the clear differences in Sinn Féin's International Protection plan vs the current broken system.
We are making it very clear to over-stretched, working class areas that we will not be putting new centres into your
Great turnout for

protest at City Hall this evening demanding that the DCC Executive stand strong and don't buckle to the carpark lobby.
The City Traffic Plan cannot be indefinitely held to ransom over legal threats and must be implemented from August.
This is all the more devastating because community groups and local residents have had to fight for every bit of greenery and playground space in the Liberties area.
Weaver and Bridgefoot St hard-fought community wins.
How appalling to see such wonton destruction of a local amenity. Such disdain for the wider community. Such disdain for the huge time and effort that went into creating this beautiful park.

Hotel gets REFUSED planning permission.
Significant decision by DCC to refuse this on Capel St with the Planner's Report citing 2150 hotel rooms proposed within a 350m radius!
Here's our precedent to make the over-concentration argument.

Corner site at Dolphins Barn/SCR has been a derelict eye-sore for years.
DCC has taken it back into public ownership and it's to be developed for public housing. I'm interested to hear local views on how we should use the ground floor space.

A privilege this evening to be formally co-opted to represent the people of the South West Inner City.
Covid-19 has disproportionately hit our most vulnerable and I look forward to working with colleagues playing my part in tackling the inequalities the crisis has highlighted.
A Fine Gael Minister representing one of the most affluent constituencies in the State says we should let his voters hoard their wealth.
An economics professor and member of the Commission on Welfare & Taxation says this is a load of bollocks.
I know who I agree with.
Should inheritance tax be cut? No - Cutting the tax paid by the children of wealthy families would be a strange priority. Yes - This is a tax on wealth that has already been taxed. Barra Roantree and Neale Richmond debate via

5% tourist tax coming to Edinburgh set to raise £50m per year for the Council to invest back into their city.
In Dublin, we're looking just to introduce a 1% levy to raise around €12m a year.
A no brainer.

Very interesting to hear Councillor after Councillor after Councillor bemoan the possible loss discretionary funding for Local Area Offices while they voted to give a tax cut to wealthy property owners in September.

Delighted to formally be selected to contest the local elections in the South West Inner City next June.
Since coming on the Council in 2020, representing the community I've lived in all my life has been an enormous privilege.
Hope to be able to continue that work ✊️
And we're done.
Thanks to everyone who opened their doors and chatted, and to everyone who helped me knock on doors or drop leaflets over the last few months.
We covered every bit of
#SouthWestInnerCity
, chasing every No.1 vote we can.
Now it's over to the people of Dublin 8.
The League of Ireland needs investment from national and local government.
DCC is stepping up and putting its money where its mouth is.
Dalymount and Tolka are moving in the right direction - Richmond Park has to be next.
My contribution at yesterday evening's Full Council 👇
'Local councils are paying private developers up to €400,000 for social housing units when the councils themselves can build them directly at *half the price*, internal Department of Housing figures suggest'
Same shit, different year on Local Property Tax at this evening's Full Council meeting.
Again, parties/independents of the 'Left' giving a tax cut to property owners, justifying it because it's a 'tax on the family home'- an argument straight out of the Tory playbook 👇
Some day for it! 🌞
Chuffed to attend the official opening of Bridgefoot Street Park in the Liberties this afternoon.
This greenspace is long overdue and was possible through local community, Councillors and

working together.

New plans from the Iveagh Trust to be presented at tomorrow's Dublin South Central Area Committee for redevelopment of derelict corner site at Dolphins Barn/SCR.
Very welcome delivery of up to 25 new public homes and community/social enterprise space at ground-floor!
On 22 August, I submitted the below re: these buildings on James's Street, D8.
At tonight's Full Council, DCC confirmed they initiated a CPO on 23 August.
This is absolutely welcome, but why the delay when buildings on Derelict Sites Register since June 2019?

Planning finally lodged by

for delivery of 578 public homes, 70% cost-rental/30% social, in Inchicore.
Not everybody has got what they want, but the lodging of planning is an important & positive milestone.
My thoughts:

@MarkWall1
's Bill to ban the advertising of gambling can't work its way through the Oireachtas quick enough.
It's not just Rovers, Bohs with Mr Green, Pats before that with Paddy Power - the addiction and harm caused is irrefutable and we need to ban ads and these sponsorships.

Planning submitted for a new 'aparthotel' on Francis St/Mark's Alley, Dublin 8 containing 37 'suites'.
This should be rejected by DCC Planning as this area has seen an overconcentration of hotel developments in recent years.
Build gaffs instead!

A brilliant, positive and progressive campaign that stood against hate.
Been a Councillor representing the Dublin 8 area for a year now. A very difficult and challenging year for many and I've learned loads, especially from the sound bunch of SWIC Cllrs.

On DCC, I've worked to clamp down on the number of hotels flying through our planning system so that we can build the homes we need instead.
I'm asking for your No.1 vote on 7th June so I can continue to be a positive voice for change for our city.

After years of campaigning, DCC have finally committed to delivering a full-size playing pitch at Marrowbone Lane.
Dublin 8 needs this pitch as soon as possible.
This shouldn't be caught up in DCC's Depot plan. Here's my solution for how we can speed up delivery 👇
Re: fight to build cycle lanes.. on our Active Travel Update at this evening's Full Council, just had a Cllr ask for Environmental Impact Assessments to be done for our roll out of cycle lanes 🙃
It's so difficult to get perspective in the cacophony of modern life/media/whatever, but you really can't exaggerate how insane it is that this shit is going on & we still have to fight like hell to install a bike lane or build a solar farm.
Dereliction and vacancy is a scourge across every town, village and city in this country, including my own area of Dolphins Barn where I grew up.
What should be affordable homes for people desperately searching for a place to live in this city is a crumbling derelict mess.
Housing in Ireland is unaffordable and unavailable🏘️
But walk around any town or village and there are plenty of empty and vacant houses that could be people’s homes.
Help us turn these empty spaces into people's places.

The scapegoating of people in emergency accommodation for supposedly refusing offers is obviously disgusting but what's worse is the description of homelessness as uncontrollable - that it's inevitable somehow.
12,400+ people including 3,700 children homeless is not inevitable.
