Please help out, every little bit will help. And share it forward. Asmaa is great and sends updates regularly but life in a displaced shelter in Gaza is hell. So let’s do our part.
Asmaa been displaced more than 6 times since October. Her husband has been missing for months and her two daughters are in desperate need of food and medicine. Please consider donating whatever you can to help Asmaa and her girls survive and rebuild. ❤️🇵🇸

Dear two of my fav people @EmmaVigeland & @MattLech: please see this clip and the clip below from Drop Site contributor @jlosc9 (shared in the reply to the tweet below). He just wrote a new report on this for us. I think it’s fundamental to understanding what’s going on with Guantanamo. Hope you’ll take a look. It’s also linked below.
Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem says it “won’t take long at all” for Guantánamo Bay to be ready to hold the 30,000 migrants Trump plans to detain there. But as Drop Site contributor @jlosc9 explains, the facility “only has the capacity to hold 120 people, with the ability to expand to a tent city for about 400 people.” Given the limitations, the administration’s plan appears to be “purely performative,” he reports. Watch Jose’s full video explainer in the linked tweet, and make sure to check out his latest story for Drop Site News (link in reply).

NEW: U.S. Department of Commerce Recognizes Jewish-Owned Businesses as Minority Enterprises A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by the U.S. Department of Commerce on January 16, 2025 officially recognizes Jewish-owned businesses as minority enterprises. This designation grants them access to various crucial federal programs, including loans, grants, and contracts, aimed at supporting minority businesses. The decision has sparked discussions about the definition of minority status and its potential impact on low-income and historically disadvantaged groups that have traditionally received federal support, including Black, Hispanic, Native American, and women-owned businesses. The designation, however, was celebrated as a significant milestone by Jewish business leaders. According to Israel’s Ynet news, attendees at the signing ceremony called the recognition pivotal in addressing historical inequities. It opens doors to resources that were previously less accessible, enabling Jewish-owned businesses to compete more equitably along with Black and Hispanic communities for federal contracts and funding opportunities, attendees explained. Duvi Honig, founder and CEO of the Orthodox Jewish Chamber of Commerce, hailed the decision, saying, “This is something that impacts every single business in the Jewish world, in all 50 states. We are officially a partner with the United States Department of Commerce and the government.”

@mehdirhasan Please take a look at this. The suspension of the US refugee resettlement program is an enormous blow. Trump’s executive order results in the cancellation of flights for 1660 Afghan refugees, leaving thousands more Afghans stranded, including those who had assisted our troops in combating Al Qaeda and the Taliban. This also affects tens of thousands of refugees worldwide, including a friend of mine who was scheduled to resettle in Kentucky from a UN refugee camp in Kenya in early February. All flights now canceled. We usually have about 80K-100K refugees resettle in the US each year. Well, under Biden we did for last 4 years. More info ⬇️
Breaking: Nearly 1,660 Afghans cleared for U.S. resettlement—including family members of active-duty U.S. military and unaccompanied minors—have had flights canceled after President Trump signed an executive order suspending refugee programs, Reuters reports. The group includes Afghans at risk of Taliban retribution for supporting the former U.S.-backed government, said Shawn VanDiver, head of #AfghanEvac, and a U.S. official who spoke anonymously. Thousands more Afghans approved for resettlement remain stranded in Afghanistan and Pakistan without assigned flights.
