Junior programmer: oh no, I made a mistake. No one can know of my shame.
Programmers at all other levels: lol everyone come look at the dumb shit I did.
Working in games is weird because you'll say something like "this game shaped my childhood" and your coworker will just drop a "oh yeah I worked on that" like it's nothing.
Hey! I'm Darcy, a Senior Software Engineer at Sledgehammer, previously in indie, and I've been making games professionaly a bit over 5 years.
And this is
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
when they get up at 3:30am for the announcement of their own game.
Junior gamedevs need to hear this.... It's OK to feel completely overwhelmed by modern game engines. Games have never been as technically complex to make as they are right now.
You're doing fine...
IT'S CALL OF DUTY

RELEASE DAY!!! 🥳🎉🎊
This the the first COD lead by
@SHGames
since the Melbourne's studio expansion in 2019 and made almost entirely WFH during a pandemic.
We did it y'all ❤️
In response to an explosive story reporting that Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick knew about various sexual misconduct and harassment allegations and was himself a perpetrator, and an employee walkout today demanding Kotick's resignation, the board says it is standing by him
Look I know we all love video games. I love video games. But even the best game in the world, is still, just a game. And absolutely no one should be abused over a game.
IT’S CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE III LAUNCH DAY!! ❤️🖤
I don’t have the words for what it’s like to have millions of people play something you helped create, but it’s the most special part of my job.
To all the players, I hope you enjoy. And to all my fellow devs, we did it.
The entire company have already proven that we can still perform at our best WFH. Forcing people to come back to an office is cruel and unnecessary, and we will lose talent at a time where I'm not sure we can afford to.
Today we’re thrilled to announce we're expanding (again!) with a new studio in Guildford, UK to partner with our global teams in the Bay Area, Melbourne, and Toronto.

Fun fact: the Australian government used to abduct mixed race Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their homes to raise then in white society in order for them to marry white people so that the indigenous population would eventually be "bred out".
Hi I'm Darcy, an Expert Engineer at Sledgehammer Australia working on the core and audio engine teams 👋
And here's me on our last launch day with a blanket one of my coworkers partners made.
#WhatAGameDevLooksLike
This is giving me flashbacks of having to hide a then unannounced PS5 devkit under an opaque plastic bag because my lockdown work setup was in the living room and my housemate wasn't allowed to see it.
IT'S CALL OF DUTY

LAUNCH DAY!!! 🖤💚
Huge congrats to everyone who was a part of this, especially to all the folks over at
@InfinityWard
. I have no idea how we manage to smash these out every year but we do and I hope you all enjoy it.
I deleted the Tweets. I can take a lot of shit but insults just for the sake of abuse, jokes about harassment and death threats are where I draw the line.
I can't even fathom why this is a good decision.
Good QA is hard to find, takes a lot of time/resources to train and is immeasurably valuable. They are an important part of the development team and should not be easily disposable.
There's absolutely no way a developer would have the power to make themselves a face model for a major character in a game at a studio like Insomniac on an IP like Spiderman.
Leave her the fuck alone.
Insomniac Writer of Spider-Man 2.
All conclusions and arguments directed to notice patterns are reserved for Twitter users and under no circumstance I'm claiming this is a self-insert
But I stand by this completely:
The chronic overworking, brutal deadlines and ruthless layoffs that is absolutely rampant in our industry, in the name of making profit, regardless of the human cost, is an absolute fucking disgrace.
I have some exciting news!
Next week I'll be joining the team at
@SHGames
Melbourne!! I can't wait to work on some great projects with so many talented people 🎉
IT'S CALL OF DUTY BLACK OPS COLD WAR RELEASE DAY!!
This is the biggest project by far I've worked on. And while it's disappointing we all can't celebrate person, it's still super exciting for it to be out in the world!
Despite me publicly calling out Activision Blizzard frequency, I actually enjoy working at SHG and want to continue working here.
But if they tried to force me back into the office without a vaccine mandate I'd seriously consider leaving.
So I have no idea what is an adequate amount to punish a company that had such toxic working conditions that it ended someone's life and hurt countless others.
But $18 million, for a company that paid it's CEO $150 million in 2020, seems like a fucking joke.
I genuinely thought that billion-dollar, huge-game-publisher, Activision Blizzard was literally too big to ever be acquired by another company.
I was wrong and this is why I'm paid to write code.
For all of the garbage that comes with working on a huge game, sometimes you stop and remember that there are millions of people, all over the world, enjoying something you helped create.
And that feeling is something super special.
Spending months on end in lockdown over the last 2 years to buy us more time, just to watch the countries entire pandemic response crumble in a matter of weeks feels great.
Hi all 👋 I'm Darcy, a Senior Software Engineer at
@SHGames
Australia doing core + audio engineering and I'll be at
#GDC23
all week.
If you see a tall redhead in skinny jeans and a COD shirt then it's probably me.

4 years at
@SHGames
.
5 releases of
@CallofDuty
.
Still the best choice I've made for my career.
(Ok my work anniversary was actually 2 days ago but I forgot)
Mine is anything to do with Narrative because I deeply dislike doing creative writing. I am forever grateful to narrative designers and writers for being awesome so I never have to.
Seeing promos in the wild so early is giving me throwbacks of that one year when I worked in retail that they started playing Christmas music in October.
Regardless of how good of a human he is, thousands of people have lost their jobs in a company under his leadership. That's a colossal failure. The criticism is deserved.
Some news: this week will be my last week at
@SamuraiPunkCo
. I've achieved more than I ever expected to in the last (nearly) 3 years and I appreciate everything SamPunk have done to help me do it.
I'm going to miss these Spunks.
This one hurt more than the others.
I would like to believe that Sledgehammer is a better place now, and a part of me does, but I'm also not naive enough to think that the toxic culture that allowed this horrific behaviour to occur doesn't still exist.
A woman who worked at Call of Duty studio Sledgehammer said she was raped twice by her supervisor after she was pressured to drink heavily. She reported the incidents to HR, but the company took no action.
So I walked out yesterday, and most likely will again if my employer doesn't make meaningful changes. Because I genuinely do love my job, and would like to be proud of the place I work.
And to all of my current and former co-workers, take care of yourselves 💙.
I'm proud to be participating in the
#ActiBlizzWalkout
today.
Because I love what I do, I love games, and I want Activision Blizzard and the games industry to be a safe place for absolutely everyone 💙
At the end of the day, all we want is to to work at a workplace that values us, pays us fairly and equally, treats us like people and where we don't have to be afraid for our physical safety.
It shouldn't be hard.
It should be the bare fucking minimum.
I genuinely feel sorry for the Hogwarts Legacy devs, imagine spending years working so hard on something to have it tainted by a human piece of garbage.
Yesterday the majority of
@SHGames
Australia got together in person for the very first time since the studio started.
Anyway, I work with some absolutely awesome people and y'all should be jealous.
Here’s the text of the email Musk sent to Twitter staff overnight.
Those who don’t commit to being “extremely hardcore” by 5pm ET today must leave the company. ‼️
Story:
I'm (virtually) joining the Activision Blizzard walkout (again) today 💙
Activision has a lot of problems, we are all very aware, and for a company with the money and resources of ATVI their efforts to address them consistently fall pathetically short.
