Hello, friend, and welcome to the Palintíri help and support system, provided by the Eldar, Eru's first born, to you, men, Eru's second born, free of charge and with a minimum of condescension.
My favorite VO from the new season of Destiny 2 is when you pick up the scythe in Containment and Eris says something to the effect of "yes, Guardian, darkness and light made one! GO FORTH AND BE THE REAPER" and Calus replies with, essentially, "Cringe"
As of last Friday, I am no longer working at Respawn. I want to be very open here and say that I'm heartbroken and depressed. It's been a very dark few days.
Okay, for those out of the loop: Riot made a couple of changes to its esports ecosystem that led to the demise of their minor leagues, where future pros used to prove themselves and get scouted. The players association correctly voted for a walk out.
If you're following me, you will have seen me retweeting things about Kiwifarms in the last couple of days. Most of you may know this already, but in case you don't, and in case it helps coming from me, let me break down what's going on.
This is a messy story because it turns out the voice actor distorted the truth quite a bit in her original viral video, but I want to repeat that it's never wrong to default to trusting workers. They have less power and need our support. Corporations will be alright.
Former Bayonetta voice actor Hellena Taylor now confirms my reporting that she was offered at least $15,000 and that the final offer was for a cameo, despite the claims in a video that went viral last week:
I was recently confronted with some awful statements I made on a blog I wrote back in 2007. I take full ownership for the things I said, and I'm embarrassed, sad, and angry at my younger self for saying this stuff. I hope it is obvious that I don't believe these things anymore.
@Gritty20202
@JUNlPER
Excuse me, no licenses are sold. No copyrights change hands. You're buying the link to a URL where currently this image is stored. Everything else is a consensual hallucination
Lastly, I'm just truly sorry to the Apex team. This is a headache they did not need. I know what their future plans are and I absolutely believe Apex has a bright future. There's so much cool shit coming. I just wished I could have worked on it.
Also lukewarm Game Design take of the day: we'd all benefit from reading and understanding more psychology. It's more critical and central to our craft than coding or art (though of course it's really good to have an interest and be well versed in those too)
@RiotAugust
Unironically, shitposting like this is how we should teach people scripting tools. One of the first things I did was modify Xin Zhao's three talon strike to spawn three talons and I learned a lot about spawning units and AI in trying to get that shitpost to work!
I have poured so much energy into becoming a better person since then, and right now I'm just very depressed because it feels I'll never be able to make up for who I was.
Let's take down the website that has killed multiple trans people and that provides a safe haven and home to some of the most vile, evil fuckers on the internet. If you want to discuss keffals' shortcomings once that is achieved, by all means.
Just a heads up that today's main character, women shouldn't code guy, is playing you. He's posted about being fired from Facebook twice in the past. He almost certainly made this shit up for attention to advertise some crypto scheme.
I wished I could take time to decompress but that's not how my brain works. I have crippling anxiety and if I don't at least start looking for a new job, that anxiety will eat me alive. If you know of anything that might fit my skill profile, let me know.
A lot of people are upset that fox news isn't airing the Jan 6th hearings but they have the constitutional right not to. It's called the fifth amendment.
I said racist and sexist things, not because I deeply believed any of them, but because I knew I could get a reaction out of people. That does not excuse anything I said; the impact of my words was the same regardless of what I believed.
I know I'm playing into the hands of a hot take (create engagement) but uuuuuhh this is a really bad idea. There's no risk of it ever happening, of course, but I still wanted to say a few more things about why "remake game from scratch" is such a bad take
Again, to be clear, I'm not saying EA or Respawn did anything untoward. They were absolutely within their rights to terminate me, much as I may disagree with that decision.
Oh and also if you think a reckoning in the games industry where we talk about certain people getting harassed to the point of taking their own lives is the right time to complain about game balance, right there in those threads, then you're a shitty person who should be ignored.
@TBSkyen
When I moved here the concept was explained to me and, having no credit history in the US, I had an awful credit score. The solution? I used my bank to issue a loan to myself using my own money. I loaned myself a bunch of money and then paid it back month after month
I'm mentioning this because with the help of a lot of people who loved me in spite of the shithead I was sometimes I was able to make progress on the journey to becoming a better person.
In re: racism in
#ttrpgs
, this is my Viking game's message to the racist element among the Asatru. I've got in on the Table of Contents page, right where everyone will see it.
I think ttrpgs now need to actively wave the anti-racism flag and make it clear where they stand.
But don't make it so transparently easy for them to break apart the people trying to get them offline. Hold on to the ground truth: KF is a place dedicated to harming and killing marginalized people and has caused untold suffering.
@RSPN_Hideouts
That's your missiles smartly picking a lower trajectory so they can get to the door / under the overhang. I tuned that logic for weeks. Glad it's working!
But I beg you to understand strategy here. KF users are desperately flailing and trying to drive a wedge into the alliance trying to bring them down. I'm sure KF has done problematic stuff. I'm equally sure that debating this now is falling prey to their influence ops.
People who don't work in games: "Imagine having a horrible boss who arbitrarily fires people and micromanages shit he doesn't understand."
People who work in games:
@ParallaxStella
One important detail that I think we don't talk about enough yet is that Seer's tactical is super high precision. Bloodhound's scan blankets an entire POI; Seer is much more like a sniper rifle (it's a tunnel about big enough for one legend)
KF has hurt my family more than most of you will ever know, and we're by far not the worst hit targets. Far from it. All I need from you is to stand against this evil, and to be loud and clear about it.
There's a lot of fucking awful people on the Internet. People who decide that the way they'll get their entertainment is by ruining other people's lives. Not random other people--usually marginalized, powerless people.
Most recently, keffals, a Canadian trans activist and streamer, has been their target of choice, but keffals actually started fighting back. You may have seen
#DropKiwifarms
trending on Twitter; this is to pressure Cloudflare into dropping the site as a customer.
I love the smell of consequences in the morning. (this asshole has been harassing devs and has now emerged from his fuck around arc into his find out arc)
EA has started blacklisting me from tournaments. Can’t believe I’m being punished for being mad that a guy on a laptop can literally stop me from doing my job whenever he wants.
They are very good at manipulating opinion or distracting you from a subject because that is all they do with their sad lives. Don't fall for their whataboutisms.
This is the standard anti-unionization playbook. Always remember that "we can make decisions quickly" can and will mean "we can dismiss your demands for raises quickly" or "we can fire you quickly".
It has existed for a very long time now, and when the people on that forum decide to obsess over someone, they don't let go until they've driven that person to suicide. We have three suicides that we can attribute to harassment from kiwifarms.
Famously, the forum began as a place to stalk and dox an autistic trans woman. It is today the dedicated meeting place of a group of sad individuals who try to one up each other with their cruelty and thoroughness in ruining the lives of strangers.
Last ultra sound checkup at the IVF clinic before we graduate to a regular OB/GYN. Everything looks great, she's precisely the right size for her gestational age, the hematoma is gone and best of all: she was wriggling so much Dr could hardly get a picture.
Most recently, people have started surfacing all kinds of complaints against keffals, who's spearheading the current and so far most successful campaign to get KF taken down. I don't know keffals, and in fact I had them muted for something unrelated in the past...
Cloudflare provides a bunch of services for KF (
@lizthegrey
has WAY more detailled breakdowns) and is basically the last thing that allows the site to remain online.
Call their fucking bluff. They have the money. Make them pay you. You have the power. You are the product. You're the league. Riot cannot afford the brand damage of having to cancel a season and potentially not send NA teams to worlds.
This is not accidental. They're extremely vocal about this being their end goal. In their parlance, their chosen victims are "lolcows", as in people they consider pathetic that can be milked for laughs, and they often explicitly express a hope that lolcows take their own lives.
@RiotAugust
The truly impressive thing about this gif is that the turret still attacks after being moved. Did you fake the turret or are turrets just more robustly coded these days?
Who knows why they pick the targets they pick. Maybe because they're unlikely to fight back, maybe because they know it'll be less likely the world cares, maybe because they're right wing nutjobs who believe trans people deserve being hurt.
.
@remembrancermx
remarked to me today how they noticed so much about the conversation around this isn't breaking out of the social spaces where trans people hang out and talk, and while I generally prefer retweeting people who know their shit better than me...
They have a number of tools that they use to make people's lives hell. From run of the mill social media harassment to coordinated write-in campaigns to get them fired all the way to swatting (that is, making the police show up in riot gear in the hopes someone gets shot)
This is, of course, perfectly legal (kind of). Because freedom of speech and all that. It is also absolutely disgusting and socially unacceptable, but these are the kind of sad cellar boys who've decided they're too edgy for society anyway.
I guess it's time for some 101 level "intention isn't magic": I don't give a shit what his intention is. If the impact of his words is to harm people and this is pointed out to him repeatedly and he does not change his actions, his intentions do not matter.
According to gamers, there are two genders: male and political.
Also two orientations: straight and political.
And of course two races: white and political.
When that wasn't enough, they dropped the rank requirements and the requirement to be physically present (Riot suddenly coming around to remote work?!) Today they cancelled asset day, which is usually when media get the first look at new rosters, with 40 minutes' notice.
I'm not at Respawn anymore, but damn if I'm not proud of my former colleagues pushing hard to cast indigenous people in indigenous roles. I hope the rest of the industry is paying attention.
Riot's immediate reaction was to do absolutely nothing, relying on teams being contractually obligated to play. Then they lifted the usual roster lock so teams could hire scabs close to the start of the season.
What other kind of product is so *embarrassing* that people feel compelled to explain it? No, no I didn’t really buy this thing. Honestly I didn’t.
Twitter Blue will be a marketing case study for years to come
The thing I'll miss the most is how incredibly specific and unhinged our language is on twitter dot com. I can say an incoherent sentence bowel movement like "didn't they milkshake duck dog rates?" and chances are people here would understand
@dreamsofskies
@ThaumPenguin
Me: I love doing this creative activity. I'm good at it. It feels amazing when I make a thing. I have time right now to do it. I want to do it.
My brain: ...
Me: I'm just gonna stare at the screen for five minutes and then go on Twitter aren't I.
And if you're a normal player, show solidarity with the
@NALCSPA
. Let them know you're on their side. Riot collects community sentiment analysis. They will bow to sustained pressure.
I sincerely hope a lot of journalists are writing to Cloudflare, asking them to comment on why they're keeping online a website dedicated to stalking and harassing vulnerable people to suicide.
#DropKiwifarms
Oh also if people come to you and let you know you behaved shittily in ways big or small, that's a gift. It's a present. It means they trust or like you enough to think you can change. Thank them and take it seriously. I suck at this but all we can do is try to get better.
I just realized I have an IBS emotional support dog. Due to my IBS I sometimes spend a long time in the bathroom and may make some pained sounds. Without fail, Taliyah shows up and awkwardly climbs into my pants on the floor. And then she sleeps there until I'm done.
It's precisely the kind of PR spin you'd expect from the owners of a company facing a strike by their workers. In fact, let's go through it blow by blow:
Until earlier in the day, they were adamant the season was going to begin on schedule--the day after tomorrow. It was clear the pros would not show up. A little while ago, they finally buckled and delayed the start of the season by two weeks.
It was kindly brought to my attention that my call for not crossing a picket line in regards to the
#actiblizzardwalkout
is not what the workers organizing this action want. We should not speak over them, but instead amplify their voices at this time.
Haven't played Apex since last August for obvious reasons but jumped in for Control and:
* Ashe is amazing and just works
* Mad Maggie is a fucking triumph
* Control is super fun
I'm saying this with a bittersweet feeling but the team is kicking ass.
After a few empty words about caring about players (remember that actions matter, not words; words are cheap), they bring out the time-honored argument of capitalists everywhere: we just can't afford to pay you a fair wage!
Riot's making billions with League every year. Their esports expenditures are a bargain compared to what other companies spend on marketing. Sustainability is a red herring. Don't fall for it.
@LouisatheLast
Reminder that everyone is overstating Taika Waititi's role on the show. I love the man, but he was an EP and starred in it (and directed one episode), but David Jenkins was the show runner and ultimately responsible for jokes did and didn't make it onto the show.
"you" will not become a part of general usage, not for political reasons but because there would be no pronoun to distinguish between a singular subject ("thou") & a plural subject ("you"). language seeks to communicate w/ clarity, not to obfuscate; that is its purpose.

*squints at last tweet*
"Anything could mean anything! You know, if you think about it, words are just letters put together in some order and if you take other letters and put them in some other order then they could mean something else."
