@wtgowers I think even if I saw a+bxc+d I would expect the writer intended (a+b)*(c+d) but did not know the rules. I would not, however, make any bets based on this expectation.

@DPJHodges Your comment "bang to rights" is itself amateur sleuthing. You could change it to "She has been convicted" or some such appropriate turn of phrase.
