@websterkaroon Oh, and of course, how all this relates to affordability, and cultural continuity & change.

@StuartBDonovan Having fun with the original quote: "Chernobyl is one of the most contaminated cities in the world but Nimbys go there on holiday. Do they go to Phoenix and explore the suburbs?"

@MazMHussain In Tajikistan I met a Pakistani Ismaili who was a retired, very successful British professor. Not so long before partition, his feudal lord grandfather had the whole village convert from Hinduism. Needless to say it was fascinating talking with him, about everything.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM The FT author in the piece I screenshotted does argue for such linking to the WTO. It was written in 2023. In 2025, the WTO is in ruins, Milei & Trump have / are withdrawing from WHO, Paris climate accords, Mercosur. Trump flatly rejects global tax efforts from OECD. No chance.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM The world lacks the global institutions to build out a global carbon pricing regime. No one is developing these institutions; many existing global orgs are being undermined or ignored. Hugely consequential countries like India perceive them as hoarding the fruits of development.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM Nice idea in theory but unfortunately does not work in reality. This is from the FT.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM Please do explain how the market values the lives of our descendants 100 or 500 years from now as equally as our own, given that decisions Boom make today will affect them as much as us. What is their value? What say do they have?

@naderalihashemi Makes sense — they're people high in Right-wing Authoritarianism (responding to threat, desiring forced social cohesion, security), or Social Dominance Orientation (like conquest).

@matty_prasad It's very telling that the project manager says "I do it for my ancestors, I do it for the future generations". It signifies much more expansive notion of time among the First Nations compared to the dominant white culture.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM The market is merely a mechanism, one among others. No need to worship or demonize it. Better to be pragmatic.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM Would you say to a morbidly obese man that it's okay to eat a half gallon of ice cream for dinner because he's already so fat? Atmospheric carbon persists for up to 100,000 years, which depending on how you count, is about one third to one half the time homo sapiens has existed.

@nvariantcapital @naftasux @DJSnM Supersonic aircraft have an "extraordinarily negative environmental impact", namely "extremely high fuel consumption demands and extreme non-CO2 climate effects, far above those of subsonic aircraft", according to an expert report.
