BJP makes Renu Devi a deputy CM of Bihar. She is a woman MLA from Nonia community-- classified under Extremely Backward Class. The EBCs and women have been loyal voters for Nitish in Bihar. Great politics, great social justice. And people think Rahul Gandhi can take on this BJP!!

So the Kashmir part of Imran Khan's UNGA speech can be summarised as: 1) India is a big market, so the world is not helping me 2) I will encourage terrorism in India, but Modi will then bomb my country 3) I will then start a war which Pakistan will lose, so we will use nukes

This reflects how many Indians (not only in the BJP) view the #Ukraine crisis. Fair enough. But if that’s the case, it becomes difficult to argue in Washington, London or Berlin that India seeks to uphold the same rules based international order that the West seeks to preserve.

We saw this in Yemen. Good relations with both parties in the conflict, and especially the aggressor, helped in the evacuation of Indian citizens. If required, India would try to leverage its relationship with Russia to do the same. 2/n

This tweet by Rahane-- & by scores of other India's big celebs-- is simply the nationalism of India's ordinary folks. This is why I chose Rahane and not other big-earning celebrities. Rahane helps us understand the perspective of the ordinary Indian much better than other celebs.

One must remember that no country (including the US) has, to the best of our knowledge, even considered a costly bargain with India in order to make it change its position on the Russia-Ukraine crisis. It is just 5-10 people on Twitter. There is no need to overthink.

He should renounce captaincy in all formats. He should spend more time in nets less in the gym. He should talk to Tendulkar and Dravid to resolve technical issues in his game. He should completely stop media appearances. He should forget that he is a celebrity for one year.

Want more evidence? Look at India's position on the coup in Myanmar. It continues to engage the Tatmadaw because significant Indian interests are at stake-- insurgents in the Northeast. India also thinks private persuasion is more effective than publicly calling out. 6/n

Starting an impeachment procedure against the CJI, maligning the EC, calling army chief names— sometimes I think the party with 44 MPs was no less effective in bringing down India’s institutions than a party with 282 MPs.

Three indicators I use to evaluate the Covid19 situation in India: 1) mortality rate 2) percent positives among tested 3) no. of India experts posing as epidemiologists (bashing Ind on failing to contain Covid) vs no. posing as economists (bashing Ind for econ costs of lockdown).

Two seriously worrying points in this opinion piece by General Naravane: 1) Former COAS says, "India and the Five Eyes countries share concerns about the growing influence of adversarial powers, such as China and Russia." India has never recognized Russia as an adversary. 1/3

So much sugar and honey coming India's way from China. For people like me who have followed the written and spoken words of Shyam Saran closely, it's obvious that this happens when China feels pressure from the West. This outreach happens when China feels a little friendless.

An aspect of #Balakot airstrikes that has almost not been discussed at all: the accuracy of info that Indian intelligence agencies had about JeM's training facility. Pakistan must now be thinking: what else does India know? Some of the the JeM/LeT facilities may now be shifted.

Many white "experts" on India and South Asia don't have much knowledge of the region. They don't have any language skills either. They are still sought as experts not just in the West but in India too. Racism and colonialism are alive because we agree to participate. We collude.

The assembly election results of five states in India are a puzzle to only those who have been completely absorbed in an echo-chamber. They had wrong priors, wrong analysis, and then they only listened to those who agree with them. But how long can you keep ignoring the voters?
