I'm not underestimating this huge effort. I’d love to learn more from grid operators to understand the extent to which this is currently a constraint. In California, the EV-A rate designates off-peak hours starting at midnight, but I wonder if widespread EV charging at midnight is already posing a challenge for the grid.

If a low-cost rate is available for several hours, it should be enough to coordinate EV charging across a neighborhood. However, for greater flexibility, utilities could introduce a flat-rate EV charging plan, allowing vehicles to charge dynamically throughout the day. Octopus Energy offers an overnight off-peak rate with discounts of up to 50%, making clean and affordable EV charging more accessible.
