After WW2, Germans spent decades learning in school about the atrocities committed in their name and apologizing. Russian schools don't teach the atrocities committed by USSR. To this day Russian kids are taught that they are special, their history is glorious, Stalin was a hero.

One of her major sources of inspiration was the abortion ban in communist Romania under Ceausescu. Thousands of women died from rudimentary black-market abortions. Hundreds of thousands of kids were abandoned in orphanages. How is this piece of history stolen from BIPOC people?

2022 annual report as one does on a Friday. In 2022, Water Services revenues were higher than expected due to higher water consumption, while spending on repairs, maintenance and capital spending were reduced (for reasons I don't understand).
@TDeryugina
I understand this so well, remembering the huge oppressive apparatus in Romania and the degree of indoctrination of those supporting the regime. Despite there being more information sources in Russia today, propaganda seems to be very effective.
@CPopeHC
Monetary benefits, meaning publicly provided healthcare is excluded? That’s one significant omission. Poor households in US spend close to $2000 annually for health insurance.
This is an emergency situation, but water issues in
#yyc
are here to stay. Maybe it's time to consider smart water meters+dynamic pricing. We could then apply surge rates for water use in times of draught/emergencies to reduce consumption, instead of rellying on fines/goodwill.
Calgary’s water supply is in a critical state.
If we do not reduce our water use, we're at risk of running out.
All outdoor water use is banned under Stage 4 Water Restrictions. In addition, Calgarians are asked to restrict their indoor water use.

I teach at MRU. I am very sorry that you were treated like this. That question is wrong and the emails, worse. You deserve better. Thank you for speaking up.

I still wonder if "speaking with an accent" is the barrier for me. Or if the actual barrier is the stereotype that if you speak with an accent you must be a slow thinker. And if the accent is Eastern European, you must be superficial/submissive/vodka-loving/socialist Russian.
@trevortombe
There are currently over 250 single detached houses for sale in Calgary priced below 500k. None in Toronto. Below 800k - 31 in Toronto, >1000 in Calgary.

Not a single word about the release of Israeli hostages or even their existence. Or who is responsible for this mess. But we must “continue to condemn”.

Detected cases. Alberta also has the highest rate of testing of all provinces. And one of the lowest ratios of deaths to total cases. The more you test, the more non-critical cases you uncover.
Kurt Vonnegut's theory of story shapes theory is the most delightful rejected master's thesis I know. All the great tales of the world can be graphed, he says, revealing the inner life of a society. Watch, enjoy, and consider what shape the stories of 2023 might make.
@simongerman600
Excellent thread. I’ve been comparing Russia to Canada. What a waste the obsession with military strength has been for the Russian people. Putin most likely doesn’t have 10 years to live, this might be his swan song. Whoever comes after him will face the same demographics though.
@PlumberAlberta
1-Water treatment is not free; 2-Mother nature does not provide enough water for unlimited use; 3-Surge pricing allows choice for how to curb water use. Some may want to switch from bath to quick shower but keep watering their vegetable garden. Stage4 restrictions forbid this.
@JyotiGondek
@SeanFraserMP
Is this threat legal? H-GO and R-CG zoning already exist in Calgary. Those who oppose this blanket rezoning (I’ve read part of the >500 pages of comments) are concerned that these projects only go in certain communities, those that are already denser than the city’s 2030 target.

My 14 y/o was expecting to be made fun of for wearing a mask. Instead, the majority of kids in her class still wear masks. Some kid that started the day without a mask yesterday put it on later out of respect for the others and teachers. This was a pleasant surprise.

Seriously, Royal Bank? The only thing this shows is that there is more to quality of life than GDP per capita. And BTW, GDP is a crude measure of annual income, not wealth. Never heard of the Louvre Museum of Mississippi. Even GDP per capita distribution would be helpful.

I am no historian but I can tell that in Romania, an EU and NATO country for >15 years, the Orthodox church has absolutely been a dominant vector for spreading discontent for EU values and talking points that suit Moscow. For years. Only the war in Ukraine forced them to wake up.
As a parent who has spend ~ 90k in childcare for two kids so far (not done yet), I salute the fed government intention to tackle the childcare problem in Canada. As an economist, I am looking forward to see how this will be implemented AND financed. Childcare must be a priority.

Not “my” labour force. My ancestors were poor peasants in Eastern Europe. We should look at nuances more. We are blaming now a writer who researched and wrote about women’s explotation everyehere, we dismiss other women’s deaths and suffering, just because they are white.
Banning abortions disproportionally hurts the poor. Over 10,000 women died in Romania seeking illegal abortions during the Ceausescu regime, and over 150,000 children were abandoned in orphanages.

Since April, Ukraine has started to ship grains and other commodities by train to Romanian port Constanta, where it’s loaded for export. The problem as expected is that the port’s infrastructure is not ready for this increased volume of activity.

Reading many reports about how misinfomed Putin is about the state of military. Very plausible. Ceausescu was only fed the information he wanted to hear. Putin is smarter, but the incentive for mid managers to cover incompetence/corruption is there. Loyalty is also questionable.

I am learning so much from your journey. Most of all, to not sweep the end of life under the rug or a pile of platitudes. To treat the end of life with the respect and consideration it deserves. Thank you, Mike. I hope you find something good in each day that you have left.
Today is Good Friday for Orthodox christians. The five largest Orthodox communities are in Russia, Ethiopia, Romania, Ukraine and Greece. Egg coloring and cracking is a big part of Orthodix Easter festivities. You win if your egg remains intact. (image author unknown )

Maybe because the first set of restrictions is viewed as temporary and the second as permanent. I am not anti passports, but I can see how those who immigrated here from totalitarian countries might oppose them vehemently.

There is a solution to this. Buy used and resell/donate often. For the price mediocre cheap garments one can buy much better quality consignment pieces in like-new condition.

Do you have data on the displaced housing units? The old bungalows, previously affordable rentals, being torn down? We have just learned that the 4 most recent RCG units built in my community (where a rental bungalow used to be) were all sold to airbnb investors.
Red eggs and lamb meatloaf are the centrepiece of the Romanian Easter meal. While most Romanians are Orthodox and celebrate Easter at a later date, we decided to celebrate both dates because who knows who’s right?
@dieworkwear
As an economist I find this thread very informative. One thing not covered is the cost of design. No idea how big that is, but when Zara designs a piece the cost is spread over millions of units. For high-end brands, the small scale makes the design cost per unit much higher.

Calgary. Where office towers with beautiful lush gardens sit empty. Where 15 minutes from downtown you can forget you are in a 1.5 million people city. Where you can buy a bungalow minutes from the same park for under 700k. Calgary is a great place to live.

Recent study on rent control in St. Paul finds that property values ⬇️ 6-7%, aggregate loss was ~$1.6 billion. Also, tenants who gained most from RC were higher income and more likely to be white, while owners who lost the most were lower income and more likely to be minorities.

Except it was a Romanian who discovered insulin first, Nicolae Paulescu. By the time Banting and Best were making their discovery, Paulescu had already filed for a patent. His publication is dated 1921. Banting and Best misinterpreted Paulescu’s research in their 1922 paper.
Many years into teaching Macro 101 I find myself caring more and more about the basics. Years after they forget the AD-AS model I hope my students remember the difference between nominal and real data, the natural rate of unemployment and some basic facts about the Cad economy.

I flew from Calgary to Vancouver and back over the weekend. Both planes were packed. About 10% of people were masked going to Vancouver, and only me and one family on the way back to Calgary. Plenty of children and seniors, no concern.
Domestic violence is rising as we speak and many women’s shelters across Canada and Alberta are unable to accommodate more people. The short-term rental sector could provide a timely solution.
The

pandemic and self-isolation are exacerbating domestic violence in Canada, at a time when many women’s emergency shelters are at capacity.

Russia’s obsession with territorial size is such a waste. They could gave chosen to push for more economic weight instead and make everyone’s life better. They are stuck at about Canada’s GDP with almost 4x population and almost 10y lower life expectancy.

Moving from Romania to Canada, the dryer has been one of the appliances I appreciate the most. People romanticize clothlines when they have the option to use them or not. Those of us who used them by necessity have a different perspective. And my clothes last just fine.

There are thousands of movies criticizing the Vietnam war, Iraq wars, slavery, fascism, colonialism... Western kids are exposed to, to start with. I have not heard of Russian movies criticizing Stalin, the 1917 revolution or talking about the millions of victims of communism.
The Auckland blanket upzoning has been heavily discussed as a succes story worth emulating. The effects of this policy on housing supply in Auckland are contested. The proposed blanket RCG upzoning in Calgary aims to go above and beyond Auckland in terms of density

Only 21,000 new units in 5 years (4% in 5 years) & methodological problems in the Auckland study, scholars say the modest increase it found in housing activity can largely be attributed to normal “boom and bust” building cycles.

I replenished our stock of ibuprofen and acetaminophen few weeks ago. Couldn't find anything for children. So I did the math. 1 regular strength ibuprofen pill = 200 mg ibuprofen = 10 ml children's ibuprofen = recommended dosage for a 4-5 year old (16-21 kg)

Like Ukrainians, Romanians celebrate today Sfântul Nicolae. The morning of Dec. 6, children who cleaned their boots the night before find some treats inside. And maybe a little stick too…These are from past years. For logistical reasons, we expect Sf. Nicolae at sunset today.
