During the height of PPG, CN held a focus group with boys. When they asked the room who watched PPG only one boy raised his hand. They then asked them to close their eyes and put their heads down on the table and asked them again. Who watches PPG? They ALL raised their hands!
Just reminded that last month was the 21st anniversary of the PPG MOVIE release. Box office was weak. WB distribution told us it was because boys wouldn’t go to see it. It was “a movie for girls.” Even though we knew they were watching the show!
I’ve been asked this before and it’s absolutely not true. Frankie is the actual human granddaughter of Madame Foster. They just wear similar clothes to visually illustrate their relationship.
So excited to partner with an incredible studio to develop new characters & stories for two of my favorite creations! ‘Powerpuff Girls,’ ‘Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends’ Reboots in the Works by Original Creator Craig McCracken via

Thank you but it’s not about making it look “cheep.” It’s about creating a sense of rhythm & pacing to make the scene more snappy. Oftentimes full animation softens & muddies the intention of the scene.
There's no sound here but it's to prove a point.
I love how with Kid Cosmic, instead of doing full in-between drawings for each pose, it just cut to the next position, purposely making it look cheap. To me, that's genius and helps sell the idea of this being a living comic.
Attended the unofficial goodbye to the CN building today. It was great seeing so many friends and colleagues but sad that this inspiring home for creator driven animation is coming to a close.
For a very brief time Carl Greenblatt and I were developing a Cheese and Fred Fredburger series called Cheeseburger. CN was very interested but we never found the time in our schedules to get it made. It was going to be the weirdest show ever.
In making these shows we never thought in terms of what “universe” the show took place in. We threw in characters from our other shows simply for fun, there was no deeper meaning to any of it.
@CrackMcCraigen
a fan actually gathered these pics. When things like this happen THIS is why they think Dexter’s Laboratory and PPG takes place in the same world… other than the girls fought Mandark’s duck Quackor at one point!
I grew up on Speed Racer but when MTV began rerunning in the early 90’s my roommate
@RobRenzetti
and I would watch it and die laughing for how unintentionally funny it was. This episode was my loving tribute to it.
There's a vid of Tartakovsky saying that when he started work at CN he had acsess to the og prints of old HB cartoons & he had to stop watching them to keep the illusion from his youth of them being good. He pointed out Hong Kong Phooey specifically
Lost Dexter's Lab clip
In all seriousness, there was a character Jeff Bennett voiced in an early Johnny Bravo episode that sounded just like Dexter's dad, so... off to work I went
I have been working in television animation for the past 30 years & two of my most successful projects were not produced under the conditions that artists face today.
Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends premiered 20 years ago today! This scene from "The Big Picture" was animated by Dave Johnston. Frankie is a png sequence because her actual animation was too heavy to coexist with Madame Foster in the same fla back then.

I didn't mention anything about "final days." Perhaps Coco's creator was eventually rescued from the island and Coco simply decided to live there alone. She's an odd bird I wouldn't put it past her.
Professor Utonium was always supposed to be sweet & innocent, nothing dark or unethical about him. Though the girls powers & abilities were more than he bargained for & his concern for their safety kept him up at night he loves them with all his heart like any good dad would.
@CrackMcCraigen
Hi there. I'm doing research for a video. I was wondering about the inspiration for Professor Utonium. Can you tell me if he was meant to be completely sweet and innocent or was there meant to be a sort of unethical bent to his brand of fringe science?
The incredible Gorillaz art book is out today! Here’s a look at my contribution titled: GANGREEN WITH ENVY. Thanks so much
@gorillaz
and Jamie, it’s an honor to be included!
When CN told us they were opening their own studio they asked Genndy and I to help pick the building and make design suggestions on what we wanted for the interior work spaces. So I can honestly say this is place I felt I helped build. It’s sad to see it go.
Sadly, this building will no longer be CNS. From what I’ve been told, everyone will be out by August 1. All moving together in a WB building as one animation unit. Farewell CNS as it was.

and I premiered Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends on Cartoon Network. Thanks to our incredible crew in Burbank & Ireland we made one my favorite projects ever! Now 20 years later I am back in the house making new Foster's cartoons with HBSE!

No that's the whole point. Animation writers only get paid once for writing the script. Where live action writers get paid every time an episode they wrote airs.
Because some have asked, I do not own any rights to Powerpuff Girls & have zero control over what happens with them. Additionally I have no involvement in the live action PPG series. If your looking for reality based superhero stories told by me, check out

One of my absolute favorite PPG promos! When I saw that the CN creatives in Atlanta were open to doing this, it inspired me to push what we could do in the series.
It doesn’t get much better than this POWERPUFF PATROL spot from 1999. Was it for kids? Doesn’t really matter, it was for anyone that loved entertainment!
Storyboards used to be about 300 pages of 3 panels on paper. There were no voices, no timing, no music, no animation & executives would READ them & trust we would turn it into a cartoon. Today you have to "make it" to get approval to make it.
Thank you Paul Reubens. Thank you for your genius, for opening up the doors for smart, silly, subversive, & sweet entertainment for viewers of all ages. Thank you for the CalArts class ring, for the annual Christmas cards. Thank you for welcoming generations to the playhouse. RIP

This is the desk where of one of my cartoon heroes, Floyd Gottfredson created the Mickey Mouse comic strip. I worked at Disney for 7 years where I produced the cult hit Wander over Yonder. It was a true honor to be a small part of Disney’s enduring legacy.
First look at the interlocking covers of the ‘Powerpuff Girls’ comic focusing on each of the Powerpuff Girls.
The first issue featuring Bubbles will launch this July.
When I first pitched PPG toys I said the figures should come with an action punch feature and hair you could comb. The response I got was "what shelf do we put that on?"
My pitch for
#mlaatr
toys was "Transformers for Girls" Had no idea how misguided that was till I started working with

The toy biz was (still is?) super segregated by gender. There are toys for boys and toys for girls and never the two shall meet.
@RiseFallNickBck
There was no “reboot” announced. It was announced I was developing something new with PPG, which is still true. Tip for animation fans, a “development” greenlight and “production” greenlight are entirely different things.
In the mood for joyful cartoony cartoons about the spirt of hate vs the spirt of love in space? Then watch Wander over Yonder now on
@disneyplus
I am forever proud of this show and am so happy & hopeful that more people will be able to discover it.
I still remember the day we were talking about animating the show in Flash with Boulder in Ireland & you said “Yes, as long as we can animate half the shows here in Burbank” I couldn’t believe it! Having the animation crew down the hall was definitely a game changer.
This series was a game changer for the studio. First series we produced in Flash. We had an incredible flash team that helped mold the software for TV production. It was never meant for that. Craig & Mike were so supportive and the results gave Flash a new respect. 19 years ago!

This is not the pilot but what Disney called a “Next time on.” We had to make this as a way to hint at what “future episodes” might be like. The actual pilot is essentially episode 1 of the series.
Okay I'm sharing this because people should know.
The rumor that Craig McCracken hates the rowdyruff boys due to the shippers or just hating them in general is false. He confirms this in a tweet from 2 years ago.
I once got a pitch on this that had the girls trying on clothes when the hot line rang & instead of saving the day they rolled their eyes & went back to the clothes. I was furious, I told them they were sending a terrible message for everyone who looked up to the girls as heroes.
Yet another incredible PPG spot from 1999. Just making interesting stuff to get people’s attention- and it did. That was the same approach to the programs - do things that bring people in. We couldn’t follow, we had to lead. No one was doing this stuff. No one else could take
Yes. Draw less. Animatics do not need to be animated. The only reason there was an increase in posing is that shows found that more poses meant less notes from executives. I hate that in order to avoid notes we have to "make it" before it's "approved to be made."
@TomHamill2

’s “Kids Cosmic” on Netflix.
Started it on a whim, ended in tears. 🥲
Probably the best superhero series I’ve ever watched. 👍
Going to be a work in progress restoring this but its going to be worth it. This is a sample piece that was used to make larger scale pieces for the cartoon network building years ago... i dont have much info on it but it came from all the way from california!
@CrackMcCraigen
People are asking what characters will appear in the PPG reboot & my answer is that we really don’t know. We are currently brainstorming a pilot story that could set up a new series but without knowing what we get greenlit for it’s impossible to say who will or won’t appear.
@bfredmuggs
I remember us all sitting in Genndy's room listening to the tape, timing it, and crossing our fingers he finished telling the story within 7 minutes!
Though my birthday isn't for a few weeks I am absolutely floored by

Art Director, Alex Kirwan's early B-Day present. A hand crafted vintage wood jointed Wander figure!
Thanks so much Alex, it was because of you & your generation of creators forcing the networks to see the benefits of serialized story telling in TV animation that allowed us old guys to explore the path you forged. Thanks for being a part of this.

WOW I just watched Episode 1 & there is so much pure love of animation craft in every frame! Reminds me of being in that desolate desert outpost on McBean Pkwy & dreaming of changing the world. Congrats Craig to you and the team for raising the bar yet again! 🛸 🏜

Thank you Steve. Thank you for creating such a wonderful world for all of us to spend time in. A world filled with unbridled silliness, optimism, humor & friendship. Your creativity, talent, & spirit has left a positive & lasting impression on the world.
💛 We are sad to share the news of the passing of Stephen Hillenburg, the creator of SpongeBob SquarePants. Today, we are observing a moment of silence to honor his life and work. 💛
I wanted to do a PPG episode where Joker (the animated series version) came to Townsville & The Mayor was so starstruck with a famous villain in town he wouldn’t let the Girls stop him. WB said no when we asked.
Nimona’s always been a spunky little story that just wouldn’t stop. She’s a fighter…but she’s also got some really awesome people fighting for her. I am excited out of my mind to announce that THE NIMONA MOVIE IS ALIVE…coming at you in 2023 from Annapurna and Netflix 🤘
#Cuphead
’s cup runneth over with pure, joyful, cartoony goodness! I am loving every single beautiful frame of it. Also it gives me hope for the future of classic cartoons to hear my five year daughter describe it as “new and different!”
CN opened the contest up to all ages & let the fans pick the winner without knowing the context of the drawing in the story. Because this had to look like a little kids drawing I picked another contestant for the one prof finds & we used the actual fans winner in the newspaper.
@CrackMcCraigen
Question: I understand the drawing at the wanted poster in the PPG movie was from a winner from a contest CN had (it was at the web site at the time) Who did the drawing Prof. finds in the house? Some says it was from the contest too, but the credits suggest not.
