Now, when 2017 encounters a human player, he doesn't recognize them as human from the other side of the screen. Depending on whatever character was selected, he starts believing that the human player IS that character, and they're trapped on the other side, needing to be freed.

Lastly, his "Broken Face" form is a result of him being made overly emotional, or more specifically, aggravated. For example, if a player did not follow his expectations or challenged his delusion of him being Sonic. He literally breaks down in response to this challenging.

He genuinely believes himself to be Sonic, and doesn't remember any life before BEING Sonic. Even with how wrong his appearance is, he clings onto that belief, and with that, has twisted most of Sonic's morals and the surface level of his personality to suit himself.

This is the complete explanation of my reasoning and ideas for the writing in 'Subterfuge with Lyrics', and I hope it shed some light on both my interpretation of the character, and the meaning behind the song's lines.

With the starting verse, refers to the fact that 2017 would not want to feel alone, but it also begins a motif of mentioning temperature. This continues throughout the rest of the writing as a metaphor for his current emotions , and is not meant to be taken as fully literal.
