Congrats to CORE member and Mayor Elect Brandon Johnson! CTU members, interested in CORE? Join the caucus that started it all and continues to make sure our schools and our city centers our students, their parents, and the educators who make this city work
Jesse Sharkey announced tonight
@CTULocal1
that he will not seek re-election in May.
We can mourn the loss of his steady, clear, and deliberate leadership and still be ready to move on.
Take a moment to reflect on how much
@SharkeyCTU1
means to us.

“I make no apologies for leading a fighting union. If our students don’t have homes, health care or public safety, it is only a matter of time before more of their schools are closed, homes foreclosed, jobs downsized and families displaced.”
We did it.
But we didn’t do it alone. It took each and every one of you, your humanity, your compassion and your commitment. More importantly, it took your desire to see change in how educators lead.
We want to thank Jesse for leading us and helping to shape CORE into the political and organizing caucus we’ve become.
@SharkeyCTU1
and
@stacydavisgates
thank you!
Dexter Reed is a valued CPS alumni of Westinghouse High School and beloved student athlete. His former teachers are heartbroken and deeply mourn his loss. We reject the dehumanization of Dexter Reed and his family. Please read our statement and support this protest.
Our Mayor, a former educator has been made to look like he has no clue about education for the past 48 hours, and now some media is gonna be “offended” because he shows emotion? Brandon Johnson can be frustrated without the angry Black man trope being used against him…

We still have lots of bridges to build and shared understandings to form, but we fight the privatizers together.

There were union activists lined up out the door from 3:30-5:00 to pick up petition signature sheets.
So many people realizing that our union needs to keep fighting for the schools and city we deserve.

Tonight, we have shown the world the power of hope, the strength of organizing, and the might of our collective voice.
Tomorrow, the real work begins. We will build a safer, stronger Chicago that reflects the hopes and dreams of every one of us — together.
Deeply troubled by all the people now “deeply troubled” today. Who only seem to care about our school system when they can use it to attack public education. Why were they not deeply troubled that our schools have been underfunded, under staffed, & unsupported for generations?
Do you recognize any of the candidates in the

? These are the folks who already lead much of the vibrant work in the Chicago Teachers Union. Tell us - what are some of your favorite memories of members of this slate?
When Christine Dussault learned about CPS's budget cuts for next school year, she organized meetings with CTU members and electeds - such as

The fact that former CPS CEOs are lining up to support Pedro Martinez is literally the most condemning piece of evidence as to why he needs to resign, immediately. We are so sick of failed neoliberalism education polices in Chicago.
Last night this racist and hateful person tweeted this to Chicago Alder Rossana Rodriguez-Sanchez. This person has a documented history of racism & doxing individuals as shown in the subsequent tweets. Please report this tweet and show some love to Rossana.

Since 2010, we have challenged the last 30+ years of education deform, and we have become a dominant force.
We’ve earned our voice and leadership in labor, public education, and Chicago.
We’ve led boldly and in coalition.
You know who I feel bad for? The normal CTU members (Members First, etc) who really do care about education and the kids. Just wait until they find out where their money has been going.
From Michael Shea: I became an activist and a better unionist because of
@SharkeyCTU1
and others. Way back, my class at Kenwood watched him on Chicago Tonight defend his school, Senn, from Arnie Duncan’s turnaround / Ren2010 program.
I probably recorded it on a vhs tape, too.
Thank you to our members who went to
@NorthwesternU
to support the students who are demanding an end to the genocide in Gaza and disinvestment in Israel.
The State of Illinois by it’s own funding metrics admits it’s not funding Chicago Public Schools and schools across the state. That’s why Gov. Pritzker is quiet.

Hear Keeanga Yamahtta Taylor speak on housing in our black neighborhoods Tues. 5/19. When we understand red lining and real estate practices in Chicago we realize how much schooling is linked to this “Race For Profit.” (registration required see photo).

Since CORE: The Caucus of Rank and File Educators took the world by storm and Karen Lewis became the CTU president in 2010, we've defied expectations. 90% of our caucus just voted to re-elect our amazing officer team for the 2022 elections. If we win, it will be our 7th term.
From Jesse Sharkey: “When I look at this crowd of people I feel inspired. I see people who are remarkable in their diversity and commitment to the project of CORE. Our union works because there are people committed to making our union an important part of our lives.”
What choice do CTU members have in these elections? It is a stark choice. Either build coalitions of the entire school community: CPS employees, neighborhood communities, students, many other unions, or go it alone.
CORE High School functional Vice President candidate, Kenzo Shibata, was out on the picket line this morning with striking brothers and sisters from the

@KenzoShibata
The Chicago business community is responsible for school closures, charter proliferation, and TIF theft from CPS. Of course they want to “weigh in” once again.
JUST TO BE CLEAR WE ARE NOT OFF THE BALLOT. This will likely be appealed in court.
When right wing forces can’t win the people, they take to the courts. They want to stop us, de-motivate, and confuse voters. WE WILL NOT LET THEM.

Teachers and staff know that good teaching conditions for members = good learning conditions for students. That’s the strength of teacher-staff unionism- - our own unity and community support. Our interests and those of community and students are the same, not opposing.
Rahm Emanuel literally told Karen Lewis that “25% of CPS students won’t amount to anything” and then closed the most schools in the history of our country. Rahm Emanuel, Paul Vallas, Juan Rangel-these are the people who actively worked to destroy public schools in Chicago.

Glad to see this energy-can we get a letter from the same Alders to the Governor and Springfield legislatures articulating the need for more funding? Then the continued push to make it happen. This is a major reason why we asked Pedro Martinez to step down-lack of leadership.
For our state colleagues who are concerned about what’s happening with the school board, I’d venture to say there is almost unanimous support in the city that you help figure out the funding for CPS also, as it is the root of the challenge we are seeing now.
Addressing symptoms
“Preparing for a strike and actually going on strike are monumental tasks,” says Gunderson. “A strike can never be entered into lightly, but in the end, it is the most important power that teachers have in a system that has been left to stagnate and fail.”
If only CPS CEO Pedro Martinez would’ve put this much effort into fighting for funding for CPS then he wouldn’t have been asked to resign by the Mayor and 30,000 CPS educators…
CPS CEO Pedro Martinez is mounting a big defense today as he faces firing. He's got:
- A Trib op-ed
- A support letter signed by civic leaders + 22 alders
- An email sent to CPS families blasting "misinformation" & stating his opposition to school closures.
Those last two👇

Sarah Chambers is running on our CORE slate for
@CTULocal1
Area VP. She is no stranger to dynamic organizing - CORE’s co-chair for 6 years, led the Opt Out movement in Chicago, and is a leader in special education issues in our city. She knows the work and she gets it done.
From our co-chairs:
As activists and organizers, we will pivot and keep this train moving forward. We are a social and educational justice, anti-racist, class struggle, caucus that believe in members, students, and community working together. This work continues.

Yet the leadership of Chicago Public Schools is dragging its feet as 30,000 CPS educators/CTU members wait for our next contract that addresses issues like this and so much more.
SEIU 73 took a 97% in favor of a strike authorization vote. These are the
