As equal as basketball is in Ireland, if we had a guy score 30 for a good D1 school we’d collectively lose our minds.
We take what Bronagh has been doing for the last couple of years for granted. ⭐️
Really sad news that Mary Flanagan has passed away.
Mary was a huge part of Dublin basketball. She helped
@UCDMarian
for years and also was a big part of schools finals, masters basketball and of course
@dublinlions
.
RIP to a lovely person who always had a smile for everyone
When we talk about why basketball on tv is so important, this is Arthur seeing his coach
@sean_sean10j
getting called out for the Super League final on TG4. We already have role models in bball, we just need them to have the platform to be stars. Helps when coach gets mvp too!
Hate seeing some brilliant young basketballers getting targeted online for being willing to represent Ireland.
If you have an issue with this weeks game direct it at the Governing Body or the International Body not at a group of amateur players.
So Ulster got promoted, went into last years runners up Maree, came from 26 down & beat them with a shot in the last 10 secs and there’s no mention of it anywhere?!
Streaming behind a paywall is fine in my opinion.
Stats behind a paywall is not.
No coverage is definitely not.
Final article of the year.
Thanks to everyone who’s engaged with it over the year. Hopefully people have enjoyed it.
Thanks to
@tonyleen
for giving me the chance.
Congratulations to
@eannabasketball
and
@KillesterBball
, two deserving league champions
It truly sucks that the one time that basketball breaks into the wider media ahead of the league finals is for a ridiculous situation that has now gone on for almost a week.
Everyone’s either pissed off or embarrassed by it at this stage 🙃
Elijah Tillman had 55 for Demons, shooting 23/25 from 2 and 9/10 from the line. Add in 20 boards and 2 blocks.
Hard to imagine there’s been many better individual stat lines than that ever in Ireland.
Lots of good happening in BI but not having any social posts or anything on the website ahead of the biggest game the sport has is crazy.
If we don’t care about it, why should anybody else 🤷🏻♂️
Last April if you predicted:
Jordan Blount to Killorglin
Claire Melia to the ACB
John Carroll to Sligo
Aidan Igiehon to Dublin Lions
DCU Mercy to be gone
You’d have been politely told…
Brilliant to finish 5th and the top four teams were all excellent.
It’s a measure of how talented the team are and how good our women’s underage teams are that top 5 was in no way a surprise and there’s still a small element of wishing we could have done more.

Irish basketball’s Good Will Hunting moment is here.
Affleck showing up to Matt Damon’s house and he’s happy because Damon has left for bigger things.
We’ll all miss watching Claire Melia next year but LF Endesa is huge 💪🏻
When we celebrated Cork as the capital of basketball with 4 cup finalists, should we talk about Dublin yet with Super League champions for men and women both in Dublin?
Saturday night is huge for some of this group.
Sorcha and Rachel vs Claire for the League title at 7.30pm in the Arena.
At 7pm Irish time Bronagh plays in
#MarchMadness
against one of the most famous college basketball players ever in Caitlin Clark.
Lorcan Murphy with 44!
25 in the 2nd half to help Templeogue come from behind to beat Sligo by 5.
Just Templeogue’s second win of the year, it could be massive in the long run.
Usually scoring like that needs a lot of ft but he was just 3/6. Incredible performance 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow!!
Huge move for Mobi.
From Titans to Kansas State. Mobi has gone on the most adventurous journey including moving to Czech when he was only 16.
Hope he thrives at K State.
🇮🇪 Mobi Ikegwuruka has committed to Kansas State, as announced by
@ArtursKalnitis
6-ft-6 wing/forward with great athleticism and physical tools. 2nd Team All-American in NJCAA D2, avg'd 19.0 PPG, 10.3 RPG, 2.1 SPG, 2.2 BPG for Ellsworth. 3 years to play.
The end to the Sligo Tralee game was about as wild as you’ll see.
Tralee hit 3 with 2 seconds left to go to overtime.
Sligo up 3 in OT and ref warns player to stay back on inbounds and then rules he got too close so gives a tech. She did warn him but I’ve never seen this before
Dominant first half for Ireland’s u20s at
#fibau20europe
(48-21)
UConn commit Gandy Malou Mamel leads the way with almost a double double (10 points 8 rebounds).
Even missing Maria Kealy (Quinnipiac) the team has so much talent & are going to be fun to watch over the next week
It’s such a shame that DCU Mercy won’t be playing in the top leagues next year.
For a club with such rich history to go from winning the treble in 2018 to not competing in 2024 is an indication of how hard it is to build constantly, especially when you lose a top player or two.
Huge win for Liffey Celtics last night over Brunell. Keeps Liffey and Killester tied at the top.
I fully get that there’s an international game today, but a top of the table clash deserves more attention and to not be mentioned on socials or the website is a shame.
Not the type of news story anyone wants at the end of a season, particularly after the SL issues last week.
Can’t see how a full replay could be the answer, for a referee error (of less than half a second).
If that’s the case we could have a long season each year 🫣.
Sensational story emerging in Irish basketball circles. If BI stands over the National Appeals Committee's decision to grant Portlaoise a replay of a league quarter-final, it would set quite the precedent for the sport and other sports in this country
That was amazing.
Demons down 12 with 2.30 to go and somehow find a way to will themselves to victory.
James Hannigan with the shot to send it to overtime and then without Seventh Woods there were big performances down the stretch from Demons Irish players.
Amazing.
Well done to
@BballIrl
for having a double header like this on TV.
With more games over the finals weekend and TV, the league finals are growing in significance.

So disappointed for Edel.
What a week, from winning the Cup to a season ending injury.
She’ll be back strong and hopefully Brunell can keep the title run going this season without her, it’s a big ask though.
So the news is finally out,
@Johnboy_5c
’s constant golfing in Sligo recently makes sense!
Excited to see John play in the league and he’s a great addition for Sligo obviously.
Lastly, I know I’m biased because of my involvement but fair play to
@tonyleen
for the amount of basketball coverage the Examiner has had. Features, game reports and opinion. Hopefully something for everyone in there.
Well done to Phoenix BC on their U18 National Cup win.
Remarkable run that saw them win five games by less than five points.
Add in a big upset of Titans in the semi final and a huge performance over Lions in the final.
My look back at the weekend’s cup action.
• Tillman a big success for Demons
• Brunell’s local heroes
• other key storylines over the weekend
The first half of the women’s final was as entertaining a game I’ve seen in a long time.
The new basketball league for the UK will be known as Super League Basketball - which is about as unoriginal as it gets and will cause brand confusion with netball and rugby league. Baffling.
Interesting that Aidan Igiehon announces that he’s playing NL for his childhood club Dublin Lions.
It’s been a hard few years for Aidan where unrealistic expectations were put on him. Getting an opportunity to play lots and to discover who he can be as a player must be exciting
"It's your reaction to adversity, not adversity itself that determines how your life's story will develop."
Rhys’ story is one of golden redemption. Amazing to come back from bitter disappointment to become an Olympic Champion.

Basketball Ireland wish to extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, teammates and the community of Moycullen following the tragic deaths of Ciara, Saoirse and Una Bowden.
Ciara was selected to Basketball Ireland's West Academy Programme earlier this year, as well
Chase Budinger is living the life.
He played 7 seasons in the NBA playing >400 games & earning over $18m. He then played a year in Spain before retiring to play volleyball. He was high school player of the year and now he’s a beach volleyball Olympian. What an athlete.
There’s room for improvement in the leagues but there are positives too
•Crowds are definitely up
• BITV isnt perfect but it’s a huge improvement over what we had previously. We take it for granted all we can watch
• Swish stats arent great (yet) but live scoring is brilliant
There’s currently 4 Southern Conference teams on 5 wins, which will change tomorrow as Neptune play Moycullen.
1 of the 4 will be in the playoffs and 1 of the 4 will be relegated.
Nice reminder that the relegation system by conference is silly.

there’s a lot of research gone into this. Doubt many others know as much across all of the competitions. Loads to look forward to over the Cup Weekend.
semi final weekend wrap up:
Best play: Keelan game winner
Best story: Niamh Dwyer - came out of retirement and had such a big impact in an upset. One of the greatest ever.
Team performance: Fr Mathews or Phoenix BC u18
Best game: derby game
Anyone got any different?
Here’s this week’s talking points on another eventful weekend for Cork teams in particular.

Last thoughts on the Irish team before we get back to the final few weeks of the league.
There’s obviously a big talent gap that we have to fill to become seriously competitive internationally.
Most of that is long term development and a complex discussion.

• Killorglin stun Maree after coaching change
• Brunell’s title challenge fading
A loss for Demons and the league but best of luck to James Beckom as he heads back to Italy to play next season.
Demons struggled with depth already so if Kyle has retired and James is gone there’s a big ask for the young lads to step in.
Brilliant news for cycling, badminton and the Sports Campus.
As expected, lots of comments bemoaning how the money should be spent on astros and football instead.
