It's been a long, sad day in Baltimore. As we reckon with and continue to swarm the issues, here's a short thread from The
@BaltimoreBanner
of our stories from the day (so far)...
Y’all this is no joke. Limit time outside as much as possible. Consider a mask if you’re outside today. Air quality index is 192 downtown, around 180 where I live in North Baltimore. Anything above 150 is unhealthy and above 200 is “very” unhealthy.
Baltimore County Animal Services is at 125% capacity after a big rescue in mid-October. Adoptions of all animals is free until they reach 75% capacity.
as a Baltimorean, am I supposed to have an intense rivalry with Philadelphia? Or is it supposed to be an intense feeling of affinity and kinship? b/c I cannot tell and I am tired of not knowing

At the
@prattlibrary
for a book talk with Ta-Nehisi Coates. He’s talking about writing, his new book and how his childhood in Baltimore impacts him today.
And yes, he talked about that CBS interview.
The home crowd here is loving him.
BREAKING: Apple store workers in Towson — the first in the country to unionize — are now the first to reach a tentative contract agreement. Story to come.
HISTORY. MADE.
Our
@acoreunion
members are the FIRST workers in the United States to reach a tentative labor agreement with

.
The agreement delivers:
✊ Work-life balance
✊ Pay raises
✊ Job security
✊ Fairness
Did Larry Hogan talk at all about all the Marylanders who have tried and failed to file unemployment? Or did he just brush over that to focus on catching the bad guys
Cliché "personal news" tweet: I'm joining The
@BaltimoreBanner
in a couple weeks. I'll be writing "The Scan," which is the Banner's weekday newsletter.
I can't wait to get back to working in a newsroom.
A programming note amid the pandemic. Today is my last day covering Baltimore County for the
@baltimoresun
. I start a new job with Towson University next week.
Johns Hopkins University is the latest school to see an encampment of student activists and protestors calling for a free Palestine and denouncing the violence against the people of Gaza. Students started gathering earlier today and have said they’re sticking around.
Today is also, I hope, a reminder that journalism, especially at the local level, is an act of civil service. We're not fake, we're not the enemy of the people, we don't make up sources or quotes or facts. We tell stories.
among my most steadfast beliefs is that if you are at a sporting event and catch a t-shirt, ball, etc., and there is a child anywhere near you, it is your duty to give that which you caught to the child.
Especially if the kid tried to catch it!
Personal news tweet: I’m going to start taking part time classes in the fall to work toward a master’s degree at
@TowsonU
. (Instagram saw this post first 🤷🏼♂️)
The
@baltsunguild
had a lunchtime rally today, drawing attention to concerns they have with their new(ish) owners, David Smith and Armstrong Williams. A short thread:
NEW: We reviewed 2.5 hours of audio from three separate recordings and got an inside look with David Smith's meeting with Baltimore Sun staff. (Again with

Trans lives matter. I do not agree with the sentiments in that opinion column. Choosing whether something publishes isn’t in my purview, but I wish this one hadn’t gone up.
Queer identities are real. Queer people do not "deny" that straight and cisgender people exist.
I don't usually comment on columns and I'm not part of their publishing process, but this one is personally hurtful.
this is in Brooklyn Park, which is in Anne Arundel County. Why is Fox 45 saying it's in Baltimore? And why are they tagging the story as "city in crisis"?
I’m at The Olde Philadelphia Inn, where I’m told Pat McDonough, the Republican candidate for Baltimore County executive, is having an election event. I say I’m “told” that because there is nobody here, and the hostess asked me where the event should sit.

the big news that
@POTUS
said he intends for the federal government to pay for the entire replacement, with reaction and thoughts from local electeds...
In Frederick tonight for
@BaltimoreBanner
. Residents are calling on the county sheriff to resign. He announced today he was taking a leave of absence after pleading not guilty to federal charges today.
NEW: An internal report says Baltimore’s public works department first noted E. coli and coliform through routine testing on Friday at the Engine No. 8 Fire Department in West Baltimore. w/

while I am deeply appreciative of the love that The Banner has gotten this week, it has to be said — I don't think there is no one Magic Silver Bullet Solution that will fix or save journalism in Baltimore or anywhere.
@boothy443
Hey, hope you’re doing OK. We’d be interested in talking with you at the Banner about your experience, if you have time today and are up for it.
We had a quick analysis on what the collapse of the Key Bridge means for the Port of Baltimore, the region and beyond. It's not the shiniest economic picture...
...this spread isn’t even an article, it’s an excerpt from Hogan’s book. On top of that, it’s an excerpt that we know has factual issues — the often touted South Korean test kits were NEVER UTILIZED.
tonight I’m feeling for friends and colleagues at the Sun. This kind of ownership change is shocking and can be hard no matter the circumstances. And, well, these are pretty extreme circumstances.
Sun journalists say there have been instances where ethics have been "tossed aside" since the paper was bought by David Smith and Armstrong Williams. Story here:
STATEMENT FROM THE BALTIMORE SUN GUILD 🧵
Within the past few weeks — without notifying the dedicated journalists of the Baltimore Sun Guild — The Sun began publishing articles from Fox45, a TV station within Sinclair Broadcast Group, owned by Sun co-owner David Smith. (1/9)
I am worried that the actions being taken by Gov. Hogan will cause a false sense of security in people, which will then, in about two weeks, turn into a spike in cases, deaths and hospitalizations.
Good morning! Today is my first official day on the Express Desk for
@BaltimoreBanner
. If you have story ideas or questions about something in or around Baltimore, let me know!
quote tweet this with a mundane experience you’ve shared with someone who is more famous than you
(but you obviously have enough chill to leave it out of your twitter bio)
Today I met a retired union worker who helped build the Baltimore Bridge back in the ‘70s. He told me he never thought he’d see it come down.
#KeyBridgeNews
Today is the one year anniversary of when a man shot his way into the Capital Gazette in Annapolis and killed Rob Hiaasen, Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Gerald Fischman.
I don’t have words for how mad this makes me.
Trump also bonded with Putin over a scorn for journalists.
“Get rid of them. Fake news is a great term, isn't it? You don’t have this problem in Russia, but we do.”
“We also have,” Putin answered, in English. “It’s the same.”
They shared a chuckle.
I forgot to tweet about this yesterday, but I've been at the Banner, writing the newsletter, reporting and doing so much more that I have absolutely loved for a full year?? somehow?? time is not real??
Gov. Larry Hogan issued a stay at home directive in Maryland on March 30, a day when we had 174 confirmed new cases.
Yesterday, we had 756 confirmed new cases; today, 648.
Bars and restaurants are still open.
🚨🚨🚨Some personal news: Nell! We brought this sweet little lady home earlier today. Haze is learning how to be a big brother while Nell sleeps off her stress.
My digital debut in
@Baltimoremag
. The trash wheels around Baltimore are great at cleaning waste from the water -- but what happens after it's collected?
does anyone know where the closest capybara is to Baltimore? Ideally one I could pet?
this is not a joke or for journalism this is a deep personal desire to meet a capybara
Five of my colleagues in Annapolis are dead. At least three more are severely injured in the hospital.
To reiterate, The Baltimore Sun newsroom, where I work, was safe today. We had a police sweep as a precaution.
@FoxForceFlacco
One thing that Sec. Pete Buttigieg keeps saying (and that makes sense to me) is that there's not really *any* structure that could survive a direct hit like that. One U. Michigan professor estimated the force was in the range of 10 million pounds 😳
