Black Women: Keepers of the Democracy, the Democratic Process and the Democratic Party is now on available on Politics and Gender (
@politicgenderj
), here’s a thread 🪡🧵(1/n)
A woman who said she is a professor in the global studies dept was detained alongside UC Irvine students
When asked if she was concerned about possibly jeopardizing her job, she responded, "What job do I have if the students don't have a future?"
I placed all my books on the shelves in my
@Princeton
office, and my mom was delighted to sit & absorb it all. I’ll cherish her expression looking at my white board with works in progress.
Even though there won’t be an in-person hooding ceremony at UCLA, I’m finding all the ways to celebrate this milestone.
First in my family to graduate college ➡️ UCLA PhD 💙💛
It’s Christine M. Slaughter, PhD ✨
Tacking on to this great & historic day, let me share my good news --
I have accepted a position as Assistant Professor of American Politics at Boston University,
@BU_Tweets
. Looking forward to joining my new colleagues at

! 🅱️🙌🏾
no one enters

womens resource and research center without encountering bell hook’s words, embracing her pedagogy & praxis and moving through the world with her tenacity. All thanks to Dr. Beverly Guy Sheftall teaching us how to engage her work. I’m so grateful.
Todays my last day as a Postdoc @ Princeton Department of Politics / CSDP. I’ve had a great year & thankful for support from
@IsmailWhitePhD
,
@LaFleurPhD

to have such great mentors (1/)
My dissertation arrived today in the mail today! Such a pleasant surprise, and a great purchase! Next stop, rewriting manuscript, book proposal and ultimately, a book manuscript! 🤓📚
No one in the Forbes 30 under 30 Education list is an educator that’s currently a teacher, or school administrator. There all Ed tech founders. That’s a HUGE problem.
I’m a first generation college graduate. No one in my family has an advanced degree. And soon I will teach undergraduates full time, a dream manifested! ✨
Thankful for the support from the Russell Sage Foundation Pipeline Grants to expand my research on the political effects of intergenerational poverty! A busy summer ahead!
Christine M. Slaughter (
@cmslaughter
) will examine how African American activists, communities, and organizations created and sustained political engagement during the Covid-19 pandemic to offset intergenerational poverty across the United States.
Wrapping up a great 1st semester with Boston U (
@BU_Tweets
) students who now know a lot about the Politics of Race and Ethnicity. So proud! On to finals!
Officially my Post doc with
@Princeton
Politics Department (
@PUPolitics
) and the Center for the Study of Democratic Politics - and I look forward to a great year of researching & writing on racial resilience!
When celebrities say “do their own research” what exactly do they mean? Read credible peer reviewed studies? Discuss with subject experts? Hire research assistants? Engage in the scientific method? 🤔
Perhaps, instead of sending empty emails and offering spaces of reflection on the one-year anniversary of George Floyd's murder - institutions could post an update of how they've implemented change to eliminate anti-Blackness -- beyond the task-forces, and town halls...
Thank you everyone🙌🏿 - especially the anon reviewers - funding my proposal! Eager to continue to develop racial resilience and its applications to the study of political attitudes, and behaviors. This is only the beginning! ✨
Working on my book proposal today. I'm reminded just how much I love the project that I am working, on and how necessary it is to understand Black political behavior yesterday, today, and tomorrow!
✨ New publication from w/
@BrownPhDGirl
. We wrote a chapter on "Intersectionality and Political Participation" for the Oxford Handbook. Read, cite, and share! 👇🏿

Starting off at BU as a Moorman-Simon Interdisciplinary Career Development Professor is quite an honor. Grateful for the support in carrying out my research agenda.
It's great to see folks celebrate their 2024 APSA acceptances knowing that I had a small role in it! It was great to work with Nazita Lejarvardi to form panels for
@APSA_REP
! See everyone in Philly!
Thankful for great feedback from the
@Columbia
American Politics Speaker Series, very thoughtful questions from students and faculty. The weather was so nice I snagged a photo on the beautiful campus.
Wrapped up the semester yesterday with a conceptual mapping exercise, and a class photo! Proud of the students for what we accomplished in 14 week! Year 1 of teaching is in the books 📚!
@BU_CAS
I am forever grateful for the legacy that stems from Mark Sawyer's fight to build UCLA Political Science Race, Ethnicity, and Politics subfield. It's vital to the discipline. Opened doors for scholars of color. A freedom for Black study at UCLA. Amazing . Just reflecting.
Excited to share my latest research based on my dissertation tomorrow with
@PUPolitics
&
@PrincetonSPIA
CSDP! 👇🏾 the first in-person (but masked) presentation.
Today, I’m in the Washington Post w/
@sojournerchels
discussing Black women’s experiences in healthcare settings, and their maternal mortality. How Black women will be especially affected by the loss of Roe 👇🏾
I'd like the name of the university worker who embezzled and made it so universities ask for 1) my credit card statement and 2) itemized receipts, and then 3) take 4- 5 months for reimbursement. Please, show your face!
Very thankful for this grant, & the impact it has (already) had on allowing me to explore the contours of racial resilience among African Americans! Thank you,

Between

Ever wonder where Black women voters find information online, and where Black women voters post online? Here’s some data! New work by me, Camille Burge-Hicks and Nadia Brown 👇🏾
How Black women get their political news matters for this election.
A new study investigates the ways Black women use social media, TV news, and other sources to engage with politics.
Here are the results:
This time last year, I was preparing to give my first job talk. Right before, I learned my grandmother, my namesake, that I wrote in all of my cover statements had passed. I was so numb and hurt I didn’t even have immediate grief. 1/
On January 18th, I am speaking on policy challenges and solutions associated with Black Women’s maternal and reproductive health (with esteemed panelists!), join us! 👇🏾
Most of my days in academia are a reminder that Black women have to be twice as good to get half as far.
It reminds me why I study the role of resilience in politics for Black voters. It's a necessity.
There shouldn’t be a line. Black folks should not have to wait. A line dance doesn’t make voter suppression any less damaging.

I saw another scholar set a goal for focused hours during the year. I adopted that in January and set a 2023 goal for 700 focused hours on Forest. I just checked and I'm trucking along!
@AlliPatter
I’m reminded of Toni Morrison, here. “The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being.”

Y’all, if a Morehouse Man is elected (first Black Democrat Senator from the South post- reconstruction— I believe) while a Howard Woman (first Black/ South Asian Vice President) is in office - I, as a Spelman woman will be patiently waiting for Stacey Abrams to get her flowers.
What we’re witnessing at the Capitol is a riot, and full display of white rage against Democratic norms and institutions. Why is the media failing to call it that?
Insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol on January 6, broke windows, stole documents, bumrushed barricades and caused a plethora of damages, but Lizzo playing the James Madison’s 200 yr old Crystal Flute is “spectacle” and “degrades our history”. No thanks.
Attend BU's 'Democracy on the Brink' panel at 75 Bay State Road on September 22nd to hear from panelist Christine Slaughter! Register for this and other CAS 150th Alumni Weekend Events here:
