Achieving net zero will require removing up to 10 gigatons of CO2e annually –about 20% of global emissions today. As 2025 approaches, here's an exciting update to help drive progress: Building the needed emissions removal capacity is a monumental task, requiring investments in carbon removal technologies to scale from $5–13B annually to an estimated $2 trillion (!) by 2050. The voluntary carbon market (#VCM) will play a pivotal role, with the potential to generate $50B in financing by 2030. However, inefficiencies and recent controversies have slowed its growth. Welcoming #Riverse to the @clim8collective ! Enter Riverse, founded in 2021 by Ludovic Chatoux, Grégoire Guirauden, and Clément Georget. Riverse is a carbon crediting platform that helps bring high-integrity credits from engineered carbon mitigation projects to market, bridging the gap between project developers and buyers. By emphasizing transparency and trust, Riverse accelerates the adoption of impactful climate solutions while building confidence in the voluntary carbon market. As Ludo, CEO of Riverse, notes: "Our mission is to accelerate the transition to a circular and sustainable society by restoring trust in the VCM. This market is a fantastic tool to channel funding to where it's most needed, yet it has been plagued by negative headlines and inefficiencies. At Riverse, we're committed to building a system of transparency and integrity to unlock the true potential of the VCM and drive meaningful climate action." How Riverse stands out: 🔍 Proven impact: Riverse combines technical and market expertise to help ensure projects deliver measurable environmental and social benefits. We are excited to welcome @systemsrenoster into the @clim8collective! Putting a price on carbon ensures polluters pay for the damage they cause. Two common instruments are ‘carbon tax’ and ‘Emissions Trading Systems.’ Where these systems don’t exist, the Voluntary Carbon Market (VCM) fills an important role. Following the @ghgprotocol guidance, companies should first reduce internal emissions before offsetting the rest. Historically, the VCM has helped accelerated climate action, protect nature, and finance the energy transition . By enabling carbon credit exchanges between polluters and reduction/removal projects, it channels private capital toward climate impact, societal benefits, and global climate goals. However, concerns about project quality, integrity, and cost-effective infrastructure have emerged in recent years. Founded in 2019 by @Saif1457 and Elias Ayrey (PhD), Renoster applies cutting-edge open-science methodologies and remote sensing technology to assess carbon projects' climate impact. Renoster addresses pressing flaws in carbon market quality and integrity by through rigorous, science-based reviews of forest carbon projects and transparent findings. Their radical transparency has attracted quality-focused customers, sparked industry reform and shaped anti-greenwashing regulations, including key revisions within @VerraStandards, the world’s largest carbon registry. What makes Renoster stand out: 🔎Transparency first: Renoster is leading the way in promoting transparency in nature-based carbon projects, shedding light on inaccuracies in carbon project ratings. Their reviews, covered by global media, have catalyzed critical discussions on the integrity of carbon markets. 🛡️Commitment to integrity: Renoster’s approach encourages stronger market standards, reducing the chances of future projects taking shortcuts. By maintaining independence from project developers during the rating process, Renoster avoids conflicts of interest, ensuring objective and reliable ratings based on data from a wide range of sources. Their method combines remote sensing with academic research, industry reports, and field studies, providing a comprehensive evaluation of each project’s impact. 📚 Public accessibility & education: Renoster ensures its findings are open to the public, with 25 projects available on their Mercury Rubric page. Walkthrough videos break down key factors like additionality, baseline, leakage, and co-benefits, fostering trust in their ratings. They’ve also launched a carbon quality course to equip anyone with the skills needed for a more transparent and effective carbon market. Welcome, Renoster! We’re excited to see you lead the way in building buyer confidence and identifying opportunities for improvement and greater impact in the VCM.

We are proud to welcome ERS - Ecosystem Restoration Standard into the @clim8collective Our planet has 2 billion hectares of degraded land that urgently needs restoration. Yet, despite the advancements of carbon markets to support these efforts, only 3% of carbon credits are tied to reforestation projects—many of which are low-biodiversity, monoculture initiatives. One key barrier? Traditional certification can take over 18 months, slowing down progress where speed is essential. Founded in 2020 by @ThibaultSorret and Priscille Raynaud, ERS is reimagining carbon market certification to scale ecosystem restoration efforts worldwide. By combining ground-level data with satellite imagery, ERS has created a certification model that aligns with industry standards and delivers results in as little as six months. Their focus on biodiversity, community impact, and efficient processes brings a fresh approach to climate resilience. “We are on a mission to empower people and organisations to restore the natural world.”- @ThibaultSorret Why we invited ERS to join the Climate Collective: 🌿 Certification criteria: ERS certification requires projects to meet high standards across three pillars: ecological recovery, carbon capture, and community impact. This focus goes beyond "co-benefits" to cement biodiversity and the interaction with local communities as core components. 📡 Ongoing, tech-driven monitoring: Leveraging digital #MRV (measurement, reporting, and verification), ERS monitors certified projects with satellite data and geolocated ground information, offering a high degree of transparency around project and impact progress, embedding accountability and integrity from the start. ⚡Rapid certification & expanding methodologies: ERS is leading with fast-track certification, certifying projects up to 4x faster than other standards. With over 150 projects submitted in 2024, ERS is one of the most active certifiers in the ARR category. The recent €5M funding will enable the development of new methodologies for certifying new types of ecosystems, ensuring ERS will scale efficiently with the market. ERS’ mission is to empower organizations to restore nature at scale. With an ambitious goal to restore 1% of the planet by 2030, they’re setting new standards for how we use technology to help funding and achieving impactful climate solutions. Welcome, ERS, to the Climate Collective! 🌱

We’re thrilled to welcome @hulaearth into the @clim8collective ! Our planet is experiencing an unprecedented decline in biodiversity, and reversing this trend requires bold, innovative action. There is a major role for corporations to play here. But according to the @SDGBenchmarks , the majority of businesses are still in the process of understanding how their operations impact and rely on natural ecosystems. Only 5% of companies worldwide have assessed their environmental impact, and less than 1% understand their dependencies on nature - this urgency-action gap can in part be explained by lack of reliable data. For companies to make impactful, measurable contributions to nature restoration, they need reliable, ongoing data—and this is precisely where Hula Earth excels. Founded in 2023 by @gsrflo and @DavidSchmider , Hula Earth was created from a deep-seated commitment to protect biodiversity. Having grown up on farms, the founders witnessed firsthand the alarming loss of natural ecosystems and the urgent need for actionable solutions. They set out to harness advanced space data and IoT technology, enabling companies to invest in biodiversity with measurable impact. Through Hula Earth, Florian and David aim to drive positive change in biodiversity conservation, fostering a more sustainable planet for generations to come. Here is how Hula Earth stands out: 🌍 Continuous biodiversity monitoring: The proprietary Hula Platform integrates real-time satellite data with IoT sensor networks, providing a 360-degree view of key ecosystem indicators like biomass, species health, and resilience. This continuous monitoring approach offers companies precise, actionable insights, enabling data-driven decisions that drive impactful conservation strategies. 🔍 Innovative ecosystem monitoring: Hula Earth leverages a scalable, self-sufficient sensor network that once deployed, autonomously collects 24/7 microclimate and bioacoustics data without requiring ongoing maintenance. This innovative solution integrates on-site data with advanced analytics, supporting a wide range of initiatives—from offsetting and insetting to managing agricultural plots and infrastructure like solar farms. 💡Empowering corporate biodiversity investment: Hula Earth provides corporations with the opportunity to understand the biodiversity aspect in their own value chain and improve it via insetting or offsetting initiatives, like biodiversity credits from projects managed by their trusted partners. These projects are continuously monitored using Hula’s advanced system, ensuring accountability and measurable impact. We welcome Hula Earth and together we strive to stop biodiversity loss by enabling funding for nature and helping businesses to understand their impact on biodiversity.

Indigenous communities play a vital role in combating biodiversity loss. Their ancestral, customary, and traditional land management practices and knowledge systems offer invaluable insights, curated over generations - yet they're often excluded from international decision-making, project development, and data sovereignty framings. We don’t think that’s always intentional. So we decided to unpack what Indigenous Shareholdership means across environmental markets and how to envision a better version of engagement. We learned so much and realized that others would too - - so we decided to share it in a paper. Our paper covers: 🤔Common models of engagements - and how they are problematic. 💡Ideas for how to make community consultations better ⚠️Traditional ways of ‘partnering’ with IPs - and how they often undermine project outcomes and livelihoods. 🤝Inspiration for more equitable and mutually benefitting business relationships. 🚫Some major pitfalls with the current approach to capacity-building (top-down and tokenistic). 🌍 An invitation to think differently about the knowledge and lived experiences of IPs and how project developers, businesses and international nonprofits can become Allies in our collective effort to recognize and value IPs biocultural perspectives. It might feel uncomfortable to read at times - but trust us and a number of inspiring Indigenous Leaders and other translators or experts - you will gain valuable insights and a handful of concrete tools you can use going forward. This work is led by Ñkwi Flores and @serota. It would have been impossible without the insights and recommendations of @dreaburbank @savimbos Joel Koupermann @FPachamama_Ec Eric Wilburn @BezosEarthFund AJ Bird Bird & McCrimmon @gradeckas Simeon Max Dr Sonja Stuchtey @TheLandbanking Tim Coles Victor Mancilla @AlisonFiller Claudia Ortiz. #Collaboration is a catalyst for change. We'll continue to build on this work and are actively seeking additional perspectives and feedback. Reach out to info@climatecollective.org if you'd like to support our next iteration.
