Day 1573 #ArtKicksCovid19 “The Beach at Trouville” (1870) Claude Monet. @NationalGallery Monet’s earlier paintings of the Normandy coast had emphasised it as a working seascape, peopled with fishermen who had to contend with a cold climate, choppy seas and stormy skies.

@chronicleflask As a teacher, I notice that principal v principle is a common mistake. Teachers sending job applications and CVs addressed to the school principle. If I was that principal, I’d bin those applications on principle.

I struggled with Maths as a second level student fadó fadó but I wouldn’t have dreamed of getting an exemption(not that it was or is an option!). I just got on with it, went to Maths class and tried to do my best. My parents and I didn’t ask “Why is Maths still a core subject?”

It doesn’t matter that she was a #teacher . It doesn’t matter what nationality the alleged perpetrator is. It doesn’t matter what age she was. It doesn’t matter what she was doing, what time or where it happened. She was a human being who mattered to her family who loved her most.

I love how French children eat from the main menu and they aren’t pandered to with a crappy kids menu. They often eat what the adults eat albeit in smaller portions. They also tend to behave themselves impeccably in restaurants, chatting to the adults and not an iPad in sight.

Ahead of #LeavingCert results tomorrow, #teachers in Ireland await the usual articles/reports about school holidays being too long, how cooking/driving should be taught at school, the cruel Leaving Cert, a congratulatory NF & “celebs” saying “I got a poor LC but look at me now!”

As a Kerrywoman in Cork city who tends to salute other drivers while driving (very much a rural habit), this made me laugh! ☝🏻✌🏻✋🏻🚗

🤔 Has Oliver ever taught in an Irish secondary school? Has he spoken to teachers at coal face about new Junior Cycle? Has he spoken to students about the “beneficial impact”? Are only certain teachers & students surveyed? 🤔 #edchatie #JuniorCycle

Teachers/schools also get loads of comments, from people outside the education system, namely celebrity chefs/food bloggers, demanding that primary schools teach kids how to cook. They conveniently ignore the fact that most primary schools in 🇮🇪 don’t have cooking facilities!

We get a lot of comments, mostly from people outside the Ed system, about schools not doing enough PE. I've worked in 5 different schools in Ireland. Not one of them had a halla. 🤷

A professor, OECD Secretary General, an academic, NAPD head, two writers, two entrepreneurs, INTO head, AsIam CEO, Educate Together CEO, an education campaigner asked for their views of Irish education but not one teacher was asked, not one. 🤔 #edchatie

The #GAA boys always land on their feet when it comes to the #teaching jobs in Ireland, funnily enough. Not for them the years of soul destroying subbing and going from school to school on bitty, temporary contracts. #teachers

#LeavingCert2023 #MathsPaper1 Good on this principal speaking out but are the Minister, the DES and the SEC listening? #edchatie Westmeath school principal tells exam board chiefs ‘shame on you’ over Leaving Cert maths paper that left pupils ‘crying’

Oh please!?! Teacher sharing isn’t feasible for many second level subjects, is a complete nightmare for schools to timetable and let’s face it, that isn’t going to make much of a difference when it comes to the shortage of #teachers . #edchatie #education

Funny how politicians never mention the fact that most of the 147 2nd level #teaching posts currently advertised for Dublin are substitute, fixed term, specific purpose & not all are full hours. 20 are RPT, 1 is Pro-Rata & only 1 is permanent! #teachers

Feeling I'm getting from principals is that teacher supply problem is being understated. There is estimate of 150 primary vacancies in one South Dublin postcode alone. If you are a principal & want to talk to me about the genuine picture, please get in touch. Email in bio.

This headteacher (principal) in England has refused entry into her #school to Ofsted inspectors following the suicide of Ruth Perry. Fair dues, Flora. You’d wonder if many principals here in Ireland would have the courage to stand up to the Inspectorate like this? #edchatie

It’s not NQT’s, it’s NQTs (plural) It‘s not SNA‘s, it’s SNAs (plural) School head is called principal and not principle. Here endeth the lesson.

While the Minister for Education witters on about banning smartphones in schools 🙄, she conveniently ignores one of the main 🐘🐘 in the room/issues facing both primary and secondary schools in this country, namely the lack of #teachers ! #edchatie

Today my alma mater @DCU conferred an honorary doctorate on this man. Seriously?!? People have very short memories. What’s with the constant media coverage of late? The attempt at rehabilitating him is 🤮 inducing. Fair dues to those who came out to protest. #BertieAhern
