you can always rely on the west to suck every last bit of color out of indigenous cultures. anyways here’s some actual examples of regalia from nahuatl speaking communities

not seeing enough folks mention that maría ríos is a mixtec woman from oaxaca. indigenous women in LatAm are disproportionately affected by sexual violence and the ongoing femicide crisis. this isn’t shocking for a man who comes from a culture of machismo.

“took” mexico does not own this swath of land either. mexico is a settler colonial state and this land was and IS the land of countless indigenous nations. this was a transfer of occupation and MX continues to oppress indigenous populations today.
2. As big as it's now, it used to be MUCH bigger. In the 1846-48 war with the US, the US took 55% of Mexico’s land!

is it really that difficult for non indigenous folk to use the PRESENT tense when referring to indigenous peoples? all of these listed ethnic groups have living continuations today. this just reinforces colonial narratives of extinction.
3/ The Mayans were another prominent civilization in Mesoamerica, whose culture and religion influenced the development of the region. They built impressive cities with elaborate architecture, and developed a writing system and advanced knowledge of astronomy.

this is the problem with how latines approach causes involving INDIGENOUS people. multiple tweets mislabeling mendez as “hispanic”, “guatemalan”, and “latino” when he’s actually mam maya and speaks mam as his first language. this kind of reporting is violent in itself.
In Florida they’re attempting to put a Hispanic kid (Virgilio Aguilar Mendez) in jail for life because the officer that died during the unlawful encounter in the first place had a heart attack due to pre-existing conditions and they’re blaming him for it.

the mexican sneak lmao…how are folks gonna act like mexico’s “territory” wasn’t also stolen land put under the occupation of mexico’s settler government? the yaqui, apache, chumash, and countless others didn’t resist mexican settlers for nothing ya know.

reminder that the MX government is carrying out its own initiatives of unaliving indigenous land defenders, displacing communities like the triqui, deploying state violence on groups like the otomí, + committing ecocide with the tren maya project, endangering maya ancestral.

seeing so many ppl being quick to blame the US but fail to hold the settler state of mexico accountable for this as well. that “la raza” rhetoric won’t hide the fact that MX is waging atrocities on indigenous peoples and continues to uphold genocidal and neoliberal policies.

mestizo discourse is continually trying to equate the terms ‘mexican’ and ‘indigenous’ as interchangeable and one in the same which is damaging as hell. indigeneity has never been about blood so it’s interesting y’all’s argument seemingly always circles back to that.
@alienjess_ Majority of mexicans have substantial indigenous blood. I think we all recognize a lot aren't but you can't be dismissive like that brah.

indigenous ancestral sites will never belong to a settler nation nor is your heritage either considering your government profits off of maya peoples while letting them suffer in poverty. the vatican flag tells me everything i need to know 🤭.
A Mexican visiting a Mexican national heritage site is what you’re complaining about…. go get a job.

nationalized mestizes and whitexicans do not have the same relationship to the land that indigenous peoples of so called ‘mexico’ have. the dominant group facilitates ecocide, capitalism and indigenous displacement. this isn’t a group project.
@chuchitobebito Yeah but most of Mexico has indigenous roots so When referring to Mexicans it definitely belongs to “us”.

this is cute! i need ppl to not equate DDLM with ‘mexico’ because it’s an indigenous holiday predating all settler state formations in so called LatAm. just how lunar new year isn’t exclusively chinese let’s acknowledge how customs aren’t confined by imaginary borders.

indigeneity is not biological, it’s inherently political and “half indigenous” isn’t a thing. you’re either indigenous or you’re not. you’re of native ancestry if that’s what you mean. and having native ancestry doesn’t make you incapable of being the oppressor. just ask LatAm.
@DogHumbled @liltresleches_ You’re forgetting that we’re also half indigenous. So we’re half oppressed, and half oppressor. I only claim my indigenous side.

you do realize so called ‘mexico’ aids in incarcerating indigenous migrants from CentAm and touts xenophobic policies like the US? also the mexican colonial state is not representative of indigenous peoples who pre date its very existence.

@catrussy notice how chicanes are leading the discourse too with Mexican centrism? completely disregarding how María Mercedes Coroy is literally from Guatemala and the concept of Namor is drawn from Maya influence as well? Maya ppl are found in Centroamérica too y’all 💀.

a complex topic for sure bc “nativo/a” is rarely (if ever) used in lexicon amongst pueblos. ‘indígenas’ & ‘originarios’ indicate the same purpose as native or NDN but within their respected contexts. two regions with different standardized colonial languages and history.
Brown Native erasure is real in Native communities. Yalitza Aparicio is the FIRST Native Oscar nominee. Not Lily Gladstone. You will not erase Triqui and Mixtec peoples just like that!. Correct your headlines to say Lily Gladstone is the first American Indian.

her “indigeneity” being that of cosplaying as a tehuana to satisfy her husband’s weird fetish for indigenous women and stealing cultural items from her indigenous maids that worked for her elite criollo family 🤩.
and don’t forget that she was also indigenous and disabled and her art focused on her indigeneity connected to her sexuality and disability <3.

hilarious trying to frame hispanics as the middle man when they too have been contributing to anti blackness as LatAm is founded upon that just like anglo america. this is not a conflict. it’s systemic oppression of black folk and the african diaspora at the hands of whiteness.
I always advise Hispanics not to get involved in the racial conflict that has been going on between Black and White Americans for 300 years. Even if they try to pull you in. Focus on yourself, family, community, and creating bonds with productive likeminded people.

“latinx is a racialized identity” LMAO the mestiza delusion is real. plus when are non-black latines gonna stop using “white passing” incorrectly? it’s not applicable for y’all.
i can’t believe i have to say this again but. yes, being white-passing is real and it’s a form of privilege, but. white-passing is not the same as white. NOBODY who is latinx is white. latinx is a racialized identity. no matter how “transparent” i am, I AM NOT FUCKING WHITE.

a whole lot of yapping when y’all constantly call folks from chiapas and oaxaca ‘guatemalan’ and then when indigenous folk from CentAm pass through MX you dehumanize us with actual xenophobia. hell y’all’s government incarcerate maya migrants heading for the US. dpmo
3-If someone calls you “Mexican” as a “slur” and you feed into the notion that it’s a “slur” with your reaction, you are xenophobic. 4- if you consider the word “Mexican” a slur, you are xenophobic. 5- you’re googling the word xenophobia right now ain’t you? 😄. Toodles 😀✨.

and yet the movement still managed to obscure and disregard black & indigenous ppl from any discourse and allow y’all to hide behind mestizaje as a means to absolve you from any accountability of ingrained anti blackness and anti indigeneity while appropriating our creations.
This is rlly dumb bc ur not mentioning that after, people in the Chicano Movement started using “La Raza Unida” to combat racism and prejudice in the US. “La raza” phrase was started by a white supremacist, but it was later changed to represent ALL the people.

white anglos really need to stfu. “i consider hispanics to be indigenous” is the direct byproduct of the global north racializing the entirety of LatAm as non-white. you just end up revealing your stupidity as if LatAm isn’t founded on yt supremacy itself.
Map of how American racial/ethnic groups are now defined, as of the 2024 update to OMB's Directive No. 15. It's colored to reflect the classification of its indigenous inhabitants, with the exception of Latin America, in which I considered Hispanics to be indigenous

“product of revolution” yet so called ‘independence’ only ended up benefitting criollos and later mestizos who kept the oppression of black and indigenous peoples intact and in many cases escalated it with spanish authority absent.
The nation states of Mexico and Central America are a product of revolution against the colonial entity (Spain). Spains colonization of Latin America formulated new nations of people, but that doesn’t make them settlers. They developed from that land.

i often see mestizos use relatives to justify trying to speak on indigeneity but never actually address themselves. it’s completely possible for other family members to be indigenous and have you not harbor that same identity therefore having different lived experiences.
