@worstall Discounting against list price is fierce with EVs at the moment though due to the silly way quotas are enforced plus included extras being boosted again making like for like comparison a bit difficult.

@skdh I think that mixes up a step change - even then cordless phones maybe were obvious , mobile phones required a system level change that was far less so - with incremental innovation. Even that assumes ‘intelligence’ is not multivariate so that 1D linear comparisons make sense.

@LoftusSteve I often joked that some proposed regulations on general purpose tech was the equivalent of a DIY store having to enforce a EULA on a hammer. Well here we are now …

@skdh @cranberryglade @NTFabiano They could look it up, Springer Nature makes c28% profit and 44% of their output is open access. So lots of room for manoeuvre and some more competition but hardly extraordinary for a premium brand, especially considering the ‘value’ of some of the niche competition.

@DavidHenigUK It can take 18 months to even be seen by a state children’s mental health professional let alone assessed even when it’s life threatening. People seek private support and SEN support that is often only available in private schools. Hardly gaming the system.

@StrWellsLTNEye @JAlaszewski @LewishamCouncil @Sustrans The economics of hypothecation is well known - the spend on transport is well over the fine revenue so it just means money is freed up to move to other budgets. substitution effect. I'd *really* like to know what percentage of LTN fines are paid by people in the borough though.

@jameswoudhuysen @FT Don’t know if they still do it but DCMS used to take entire software and IT services into the ‘creative industry’ figures (long story but short version there were no software dev figures) then use it to justify various luvvie support measures.
