Periodically, I have a little seethe over the fact children’s books are often treated as lesser, but when you ask people about the book that had the most impact on them it’s nearly always a book they read as a child
It breaks my heart when people resend their queries with a small error, profusely apologising for their 'unforgivable mistake.' Guys it's ok agents are just people, I for one am not going to cast you out of my inbox because of a typo😅
Annual tweet of bafflement about the constant snobbery surrounding funny books for kids. They have ultimate power to make readers out of reluctant readers, and surely we all agree on the power of reading to create a more empathetic society. PLS LET YOUR KIDS READ FOR FUN I BEG U
Your periodic reminder that agents go through just as much rejection as writers! Sometimes books we adore don’t sell, sometimes authors of manuscripts we fall in love with sign with someone else, and every time we are 💔 💔 💔
Five years ago today I started out in agenting. It’s a career with highs and lows, but I can’t imagine loving any job more. Having a drink to celebrate my anniversary with the best job in the world 🥂

has been promoted to director of Children’s and YA at the Madeleine Milburn Literary Agency (

) and Oliva Maidment has been appointed head of books, working closely with the directors to implement strategy.
This time 2 years ago I was an unpublished writer and agent assistant at
#YALC
, wondering if I'd ever be on a panel. Today I just got back from FIVE EVENTS talking about agenting AND my own real life book. Dreams can actually happen✨
Does anyone else feel like they’re 13 again holed up in their bedroom solely having contact on msn 🙃 I might start logging on and off Houseparty to get people’s attention and sending cryptic messages through meaningful song lyrics
Today is my official one year anniversary at
@MMLitAgency
🥳 it’s been quite a year and I’m celebrating with Nutella on toast, because I know how to party
This happened a week ago and I’ve been processing it but for my thirtieth birthday my mum - in complete earnest - bought me an empty engagement ring box. You couldn’t write it, could you
As an agent the publishing process can become so normalized for me but God, it's really impressive to have written a book isn't it. Stringing like 100k words together in an entertaining, meaningful way. Authors give yourselves a pat on the back 😅
Turning 28 in a pandemic so yes, I have been sitting around drinking excessively wearing a tiara and listening to Billie Eilish ‘you should see me in a crown’ on repeat, thank you
So I wrote a new book. I hope it ‘turns your head.’ Maybe if you decide it ‘ticks all your boxes’ you would like to ‘crack on’ with it. (Sorry for ‘laying it on factor 50’) 😂🌞⛱️ 🌴🥤

When I am charmed by a cover letter, I instantly pay more attention to the submission. Cover letters aren't the be all and end all - first and foremost it's about the book - but sincere, personalised & professional letters do make a difference 🥰
Left therapy today, having a g&t🥂 obviously everyone’s problems are ongoing and I may well be back, which is OK, but wow I’m in a much better place than I was three years ago 🥰 To anyone thinking about going, I say do it!!
I tried. I tried to watch other shows, branch out, expand my mind, broaden my horizons, I really did. But here I am watching Gilmore Girls yet again from the beginning
Suffice to say I POUNCED when this stunning Austen-meets-Gossip-Girl YA dropped into my inbox complete with all the intense friendships, romance and scandal I could ever have dreamed 💖💖 so delighted to welcome the incredibly talented

🚨 some! life! news! 🚨 I put my heart and soul (and way too many semi-colons) into a novel this summer, and today I've signed with the wonderful

As it's a new year, a reminder that I am open to submissions and eager to discover new talent!✨Looking for all kinds of children's and YA - surprise me! Submission guidelines:

Back from a week off where, for the first time in maybe 6 years, I didn't check my emails/try to 'just do a few bits' and it was hard but I have returned to my desk 100% alive and ready. Who knew taking a proper break was...good for mental health?
A man just threw himself through the tube doors to talk to me and got trapped in the middle of his weird chat up line. It was top quality entertainment
For anyone thinking of moving into agenting for easier hours, I don’t even take a bath without reading a submission in it and I’m still laughably behind. My subs inbox is currently at 150 cause I dared to have a weekend
Publishing is facing “industry-wide burnout” according to a survey conducted by The Bookseller, which revealed 89% of staffers had experienced stress during the course of their work over the last year, while 69% reported burnout:
I remember being an aspiring baby agent and wondering if I'd ever have an author at
@yalc_uk
and this year I have eight 🥹 Authors beware, I will be sitting right in the front row all weekend staring at you intensely 👀🥰
Listening to exile on the train and look up to see the guy opposite is mouthing the words, also listening to it, like the tracks are in sync. Surely we have to get married now, whether we’re attracted to each other or not, it’s the law
Can someone PLEASE give me a YA romance bc I've been agenting a few years now and it's an absolute tragedy I don't have one single one on my list
#mswl
I bought book stands to display some of my authors’ books in my new living room and every single person I’ve had round so far has called me a dork 💔 idk whether to get rid of the stands or get new friends
My boyfriend found a girl’s wallet on the plane who just happens to live down the road from his mum, and I can’t help thinking he should dump me now because this would be the best meet cute ever 🤷♀️
This is what I love most about our job - that anyone, anywhere in the world can send me a story and if I love it we can work together to make it into a book! - so this misconception always makes me sad
I’m always surprised at the number of people who think we find most of our writers via referral. 90% of my list is, and continues to be, writers I have found in the ‘slush pile’, and I can’t see that ever changing!
I notice myself ageing every time I watch Gilmore Girls. Latest take: Jess isn’t exciting and mysterious he’s just hard work and exhausting 😩 and Dean isn’t boring he’s just...nice? My god. I’m 👵🏻
Excited to be expanding the MM children's team! Come work with me and

One more weekend left to apply for this! Manuscripts DO NOT HAVE TO BE FINISHED. All mentees will receive six months of editorial support, and will be offered representation. I am SO excited to start reading the applications and find my perfect mentee 💫

Super excited to discover, support and nurture new talent ✨✨✨✨
I honestly do not understand the number of people who call me 'Chole' in the submissions inbox 😂 (no one panic I'm not going to delete it if you have, I don't really care, it's just...WHO IS CALLED CHOLE?)
It’s ducking freezing but I’m getting in the summer mood cause
#MyTypeonPaper
is out today!! 😎 Three perfect on paper guys all start grafting Maya at her summer job at Casa Nadar and no, no I wasn’t jealous of her as I was writing it at all
I’ve been working hard on a project with a tight deadline which I JUST finished, and I’m tucking into this chocolate medal that my boyfriend bought me at the start of the process as a reward. If you haven’t yet tried chocolate-based motivation I would 100% recommend 🥇
Horror is experiencing a literary boom with a record-breaking year of sales, as editors and agents reveal a rise in submissions from the scarier side of fiction.

UK/US cover reveal! 🧡 Still kind of wish we’d called this book ‘People in Long Term Relationships Turning 30 and Freaking Out,’ but it didn’t have the same ring. Thanks

This morning my bf said ‘ah yes summer party season, when you leave the house a girl, come back as a goblin’ and that should give you some idea of how hungover I am

Is anyone else finding they’re generally managing to keep calm but a tiny thing will send them into a spiral? This was me earlier because some of my emails aren’t sending. And my boyfriend when we couldn’t get hold of any yeast to bake bread 😂
During the day I use my
@MMLitAgency
agenting mug and later in the evening I switch to my ‘leisure time reading’ mug and I’ve only just realised how truly nerdy that is
Laurie’s YA thriller, about a teen cartographer who solves crimes using her maps, is so deliciously dark and twisty and utterly gripping. I cannot wait to work on it 🙌
Grateful for some good news in these strange times—I am thrilled to say I’m now represented by
@ChloeSeager
, and I can’t wait to work with the amazing team at
@MMLitAgency
on my latest YA project.
Came home to my bf making dinner. He put on Taylor Swift’s folklore album. He bought candles and flowers and prosecco and, most importantly, a giant block of cheese. And they said romance is dead 🧀 🧀
I am THRILLED to be representing
@bookgirlsr
and her delightfully creepy, atmospheric MG novel about a cursed house that preys on its unsuspecting inhabitants 🕸️🏚️🕸️ Sana's writing genuinely gave me chills and I know her story will enchant child and adult readers alike ✨🥳🍾
🥳EXCITING NEWS🥳 I am so pleased to announce that I am now represented by the amazing

Does anyone else ever get afraid they've accidentally tweeted the same thing twice, years apart, and that someone will notice and then you're one step closer to being that granddad who forgets they tell the same jokes every year at Christmas and always finds them funny
This evening I’m going to
@WaterstonesPicc
for the first time in 2020. Feel like I should buy a new outfit and do my hair and maybe drive there in a limo
I’ve moved house right by a cemetery and just nearly got locked in for the night because I walking around listening to MCR. I feel this is sufficiently on brand
