super excited and grateful to be joining the MD/PhD program at the University of Cincinnati this summer! can’t wait to be part of the next generation of queer physician-scientists ♥️

People who identify as transgender have significantly higher rates of suicide and suicide attempts compared with the rest of the population, according to a population-level study out of Denmark.
being trans in the US is really hard right now, but I’m very excited to share that I (finally) got top surgery a few weeks ago! recovering during medical school classes has been tough, but this is thing I’ve ever done for myself 🏳️⚧️
@FelixJBerrios
I’m Carson (they/he)! I’m a queer & trans physician-scientist in training interested in medical geography, informatics, and health policy.
I enjoy cooking, reading, and biking! I also am a parent to lots of houseplants 🌱 and a lifelong Midwesterner
testifying for trans youth today in my white coat was truly one of the greatest honors I’ve had - it’s a privilege to advocate and a privilege to be here, and I hope that’s never lost on me
Carson continued, "This care is making them happier and healthier. Gender-affirming care IS healthcare. It’s what has allowed me to pursue medicine and have the privilege of writing to you today as a trans adult."
i’ll jump on

hi i’m carson, a queer and trans MD/PhD hopeful interested in pursuing primary care medicine and epidemiology research! i hope to approach public health from medical, scientific, and community-centered perspectives.
excited to share this piece I wrote with a med school classmate on Ohio HB 68, which seeks to ban gender affirming care for minors, in the Cincinnati Enquirer!
today I had my first day of our longitudinal primary care clerkship at a site serving a lot of trans patients, and it was definitely my best experience of med school so far :)
today I was asked to leave a

this is nowhere near the end of the road given his other statements, but I still feel so proud of all the organizing and emotional labor from Ohio trans community members in getting a veto at all. we have held them off for 2 years and will not back down! 🏳️⚧️
BREAKING: DeWine vetoed House Bill 68.
"Were House Bill 68 to become law, Ohio would be saying that the state, that the government knows better what’s medically best for a child than the two people who love that child the most: the parents."
amidst all of the anti-trans government chaos going on in Ohio the past few months, I am excited to share I’ve joined the

we’ve had 5+ lectures this year on opioids and recreational drugs, but we were never taught harm reduction principles surrounding drug use. do other medical schools teach harm reduction in their curriculum?
“I was a trans kid who became a trans adult in Ohio, and it feels so dehumanizing to see my home state spend years trying to strip healthcare from my community”
The Ohio Senate voted to override two of Gov. Mike DeWine’s vetoes Wednesday — one on a bill blocking gender-affirming care for trans youth and the other blocking cities from banning flavored tobacco sales.

Ohio voters have approved a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to an abortion and other forms of reproductive health care. The outcome adds to a string of wins for abortion rights advocates in numerous states since Roe v. Wade was overturned.
devastating news for the trans community in Ohio after spending years fighting this bill. lawmakers would rather bully trans kids for political gain than work on evidence-based policy that our state needs
BREAKING: Ohio Senate overrides governor's veto of transgender care restriction.
Dara Adkison of TransOhio told me they talked to 68 families in the last 48 hours who requested emergency funds and planned to move due to the law.

being “apolitical” or “neutral” as a med student or other healthcare trainee is so…. yikes. medicine is and always will be political, and being able to ignore that is a privilege
The CDC is no longer recommending Americans to stay home after testing positive for COVID-19, a major shift in policy that comes as much of the country has moved on from the height of the pandemic.
My latest is out with
@lgbtqnation
. In it, I cover the recent Ohio regulations on adult transgender care implemented by DeWine, and what we can expect if they're to pass. I also cover how this will impact trans people in the state, including myself.
truly putting the team (I have 27 cousins) on my back by being the only queer one, the only trans one, the only one with piercings/tattoos, and the only one in medicine/science
I am once again asking reporters, writers, and academics to include trans voices in their pieces on trans health issues. tired of seeing pieces that only feature cis experts

1. Yesterday, an incredible thing happened in an Ohio hearing over a ban for trans youth care.
Presidents of the state's Children's Hospitals, best in the nation, testified: "You trust us on every other condition, please trust us on this one."

these articles always make me think of all the trans kids whose parents won’t or can’t move them out of state for care, who aren’t out to their parents, who want GAC but don’t receive it
As bans on transgender care for minors grow, a migration of sorts is underway —
@BostonGlobe
“For transgender children and their families, it’s about more than health care and hard choices. It’s also about being in a place where they don’t fear…
I will add to this conversation that I am trans and applied to 35 MD/PhD programs and the most viable option for me was in such a state.
I think it’s up to each individual student, and I certainly can’t speak to the experience of students of color
I’m curious how we are advising prospective graduate students on applying to programs in certain states these days. Curious to hear how you all might be navigating this, especially those of you in said states.
this is so unbelievably messed up. if my student health insurance was taken away I would have to be uninsured as I can’t afford a premium and am not eligible for Medicaid
The University at Buffalo has announced that they will be withdrawing health insurance benefits to around 30,000 domestic students in Fall 2024. Without a robust health insurance option, nor a requirement to be insured at all, countless students will choose to remain uninsured
the proposal is just as bad as expected. as a trans person in Ohio, I am so sad and scared for my community.
the full rules and directions for public comment (by Jan 19) can be found here:
We have the proposed rules from DeWine, and they are bad.
Bottom line: This will close clinics, force trans adults off care, has even more draconian restrictions under 21 years old, and creates an extreme surveillance system for trans people.
I am already hearing from classmates and friends that med students applying pediatrics and other specialities do not want to apply or match in Ohio. others have reported physicians who plan to move out of state. this bill will have broader impact on healthcare in Ohio.
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Friday he is taking time to read over testimony for a bill that would prohibit doctors from providing gender-affirming care to trans youth and block trans athletes from playing women’s sports.

we aren’t just tired of it - as I non-binary person this makes me deeply uncomfortable, and I am disappointed that this data is highlighted in this way. I also worry about how politicians will misuse this data
I think most people are tired of the "sex ratio" conversations, but the split here was pretty close: 43% assigned male at birth and 55% assigned female at birth (2% not clear from the chart provided). Note there are actually more binary trans women than trans men (6/6)

🛑BREAKING: The bill was voted out of the Senate by a vote of 24-8. This is a shameful day in Ohio.
📜IMPORTANT REMINDER: Before this legislation goes to

, HB 68 has to go back to the full House for a vote since it was amended in committee.

sad I couldn’t make it this year, but so proud of my fellow Ohio medical students advocating for access to abortion, gender affirming care, PrEP, and more at the OSMA Meeting this weekend! excited to serve on GC and continue policy-making next cycle
a ratio that’s not close to 1:1 is also not a valid argument against providing GAC. putting the perspectives of youth assigned female at birth into question is just misogyny and transphobia
People often talk about the "sex ratio" of trans youth assigned male at birth vs. assigned female at birth. Reminder: in the CDC's YRBS, the ratio was close to 1:1 and favored youth assigned male at birth in both 2017 and 2019.
