He probably won’t get an Allstar because these things are too bound up in media profile but
@ConorMcCluskey3
has been the best cornerback in football this summer.
A short thread. So former Derry captain Mark Lynch retired from
@Doiregaa
duty this week. He’s responsible for one of my favourite GAA memories. I asked my niece what she wanted for her 18th birthday - “Mark Lynch’s jersey.”

In the queue for the Tesco on Drayton Park, was wearing a
@Doiregaa
goalkeeper shirt. Bloke in front of me in full cockney accent shouts back “Go on Derry” had a yarn with him (2 metres distance) turns out he was a Grieve and his oul boy from Dungiven. Brightened my day a wee bit
People need to calm down a bit, yes yesterday was a bad day. But this
@Doiregaa
team has given us more highs than we’ve see in a generation, and there will be more to come.
As a metaphor for the historic institutionalised infrastructural neglect of Derry City, the special train for Derry fans heading to the Galway match at Croker running from Belfast is a bit too on the nose. Next thing you’ll be telling me they built Derry’s University in Coleraine
There’ll be a narrative about Cork putting it up to Dublin, but this was basically an exhibition game until Dublin decided it wasn’t. People who can’t admit that Dublin are going to kill the football championship are the GAA equivalent of climate change deniers.
Whatever my misgivings about Sky having the rights to the GAA games, there’s no questioning that the evidence based analysis provided by the likes of Canavan and McGuinness is light years ahead of the nostalgic bullshit you hear on RTE of a Sunday afternoon.

Shane! Shane! Come back!
Took me two weeks but I finally calmed down enough to write about the euphoria of the Ulster final.

An Irishman locked down in a third floor North London apartment can get a fierce pang of jealousy when his brother in Donegal is sending pics like this from the beach behind house.
The most tedious thing about Gaelic football is the constant desire to try and drag it back to some mythical halcyon era of catch and egged on by nostalgic ‘in our day pundits.’ If I could implement one rule change it would be a 5 year moratorium on rule changes.
With my old boots in an attic in Limavady, a return to GAA management and a first on-field training session tomorrow has necessitated a new pair of Kings.

The last number of
@Doiregaa
jersies have been belters because of the clean lines and simplicity. It’s hard to mess up what is a classic template but O’Neill’s managed to bollix it here, that pixelation effect on the central band is dreadful and the band is only on the front.
Lots of great pics of Eamonn Coleman from 1993 but I’ve always loved this one from right on the final whistle of

The ability to chill out on my sofa in Highbury on Saturday evening and watch the
@Doiregaa
SFC live on my TV is something generations of Oak Leaf exiles could only have dreamed of. The streaming service has been superb my thanks to everyone who has made it happen.
So farewell, Bran McCann, chaser of and destroyer of sticks and frustrated smiter of bumblebees. I know he was just a dog but he was my dog and I thought he was awesome.
If my social media feeds are any gauge, the vast majority of GAA folk are supportive of Kildare’s stance. Ordinary members increasingly fed up with Croke Park prioritising financial considerations.
Thanks to
@BBCNews

@HealthwatchE

It didn’t work out the way we wanted tonight but I’m immensely proud of the young folk of my club. Never ever under estimate what every point, catch, and tackle means to Limavady people who’ve had to leave the parish. Thank you lads

Vintage sports shirts are my thing. I wanted the white Italia 90 so badly when I was 16 but didn’t have the cash. Took me nearly 30 years but finally got one.
One for the day that’s in it
@DanMartin86
on his way through
@IrishCorner10
on Alpe D’Huez in 2013. All the best in your retirement Dan. You’ve given Irish cycling fans some great days.
Hairs on the back of the neck stuff from
@NeilFo
here. As wholehearted a GAA man as you could wish to meet. Delighted for him that he finally has an All-Ireland medal 15 years after Damien Reddington’s late goal denied him one with Derry minors.
The legendary Tony Scullion features on
@SportTG4
’s Laochra Gael tonight. I sat down with him many moons ago to talk about his footballing career and the joy he felt bringing the Sam Maguire Cup to his parents house
Enjoyed the hell out of that. First time in 10 years I’ve made two
@Doiregaa
games in a week. Sending me on the plane back to London with a smile on me face tomorrow

Apart from the ridiculous false equivalence you’re drawing here, Simon Zebo is not an IRFU player. Can’t believe you don’t see how bad this take makes you look.
Been a privilege to watch
@lynch_6
playing for
@Doiregaa
teams since he was a cub as dedicated a servant as our county has ever seen. His immense talent is matched on only by his modesty. A man who deserves every scintilla of praise that comes his way.
Humility. Dedication. Class. Still going strong, and now with over 50 senior championship appearances for Derry. An Oakleaf Legend. Mark Lynch. 🇦🇹

The internet has undoubtedly had some negative consequences, such as the undermining of liberal democratic norms, but that I can sit on my sofa in Highbury and watch

I’ve a few oul features with the
@Doiregaa
lads of 1993 floating about in my archive - this one with Brian McGilligan might be my favourite. His encounter with Jack Sheedy makes it worth the read
So I wrote a thing for this week’s

En route from London back home to Ireland for Christmas myself. If it makes you feel any better your work has been superb. It helps me navigate what’s going on and get through the weeks.
I wrote a thing for Sunday’s
@doiregaa
county finals program. Persian Immortals, The Ship of Theseus, Trigger’s broom and how the ageless nature of the the teams we follow is a comfort as time has its way with us.
Ah lads, it’s been an age since I had the joy of watching a Derry match for a second time. Gotta enjoy the good days, there’s been enough bad ones this last 10 years.
Can have no complaints about that result but the
@Doiregaa
lads should be very proud of what they have achieved this year. Given us some of the best days we’ve had in a generation. Thanks lads.

Aye, sex is grand, but have you ever been late for a party and tried to sneak in unnoticed only to accidentally kill the host's dog on the way in and then invite yourself to live in the host's house for free "as a guard dog" afterwards?
You can see the look on Aoibhin’s face. Mark only ever won that accolade once and you might have thought it was something he’d have wanted to hang on to. But he wanted to make sure Aoibhin was happy with her present so he gave it to her. An absolute prince of a fella

There was a bit of me that hoped that after seeing the reaction to the balls they made of our red shirt O’Neills might rectify it for the white version, but alas no. They given us another dog’s dinner of a jersey.
Thanks to all folk on Twitter, WhatsApp, Text and Facebook inquiring after my emotional well-being after my cameo appearance on MOTD live tonight. Bit of a miracle they managed to catch me not swearing.
I know it’s an unfashionable opinion but I prefer Gaelic football to hurling and that fact that there’s no football being shown live on television until the third weekend of the championship is extremely frustrating.
GAA President Jarlath Burns with a message more important than ever after the All-Ireland Final.
“For those who are our diaspora, who left this country because of war and famine, whose ancestors had to leave…and we thank the country’s who took you in and gave you jobs”
👏👏
The latter part of the championship was the only bit that really worked I used to love quarter-final weekend. The Super Eights have actually made the football championship worse. When I’m watching golf ahead of Gaelic football something’s gone wrong.
Well done

Watching Derry ease to a comfortable win framed by the always breathtaking vista of the hills of home. I genuinely can’t think of anything that makes me feel as grounded and content. The GAA is home.
As an exile I wasn’t there but hard to imagine that this wasn’t most outrageously entertaining drawn game played in Gaelic football this year.

So I wrote another thing for the
@Doiregaa
program - mostly it’s about my old border collie Bran who went for the long walk in the sky last month but it does also relate to football. Anyway I’ve used a Heaney line so at least that part is good.
My heart rate readings from the Apple Watch were all over the place today watching

Privileged that my time as a GAA reporter in Derry coincided with the career of this man. I got a front row seat to watch a genius at work for 20 years. On top of everything else an absolute gentleman to deal with.
Maybe it’s fate -
@Doiregaa
need a new senior football manager and at the same time I spot this on EBay in my size. Maybe I’ll wait until I get nominated before bidding. After all I wouldn’t want to look foolish wearing it.
