East Portland is a growing and evolving community that has been waiting too long for promises by city leaders to be realized. I am running for Portland City Council District 1 to be East Portland's champion in City Hall!

Anyone else tired of the "tHE pROTeST iSN't aBOuT bLacK liVES aNYMorE!" takes? 🙄
Yes, it is. Black Lives Matter so much that our majority white city is fed up with the injustice and they're literally putting their bodies on the line for the movement.
This is a turning point!
@KateAronoff
My immigrant family that moved here from a "third world country" for the "American Dream" is moving back to their home country. Because the quality of life is significantly better financially and emotionally back there. Very eye opening if you ask me.
It just makes absolutely no sense to me why protestors for BLM are met with such immeasurable force, but people toting guns on the streets and openly physically assaulting others receives an uncomfortably MILD response by PPB.
And I'm completely sick of the tired excuses. SMH.
I literally do not care what Trip Advisor says about Portland. I care that people have a roof over their head, food in their bellies, and that we are known for being a city that tackles our problems by centering marginalized voices to develop community built solutions. Thassit.
I don't know how to process the murder of two protesters in Kenosha last night. I'm worried about Portland, as PPB apparently thinks it's okay to let armed white supremacists loose on our streets without intervention. 😰 If police are supposed to "keep us safe", who is "us"?
Personal News: I'm officially a first time home owner and East Portland resident 🏡🔑💚 thank you thank you thank you to my community for supporting me on this journey 🫶🏾
I can't even wrap my mind around having $150,000 laying around to loan myself to run my campaign. Like, that amount would literally change my life by eradicating my student loan debt, and he's out here lending it to himself (illegally) to run for mayor. 🥴😩
Devastated by the news about protestors being shot at in Normandale Park, resulting in 5 injuries and 1 death. We must make no mistake that aggressive anti-protest rhetoric is responsible for inciting this kind of violence, and we must speak out against it whenever we can.
I want to go back out to protest but I have literally NO gear to protect myself. What kind of gear do people recommend I buy at a minimum? Helmet and goggles? Should I just buy a gas mask too? Where are folks buying this gear?
Rest in Peace, June Knightly. 🖤 Thank you for being a bright light during dark times and an advocate for justice. You deserved better.
To the other injured protestors, some who are still in critical condition, we're here for you. We stand by you. And we will continue to fight.
There's a vote coming up this Wednesday at City Council. Get informed and be prepared to pick a side. I hope you pick the side of CHANGE! ⤵️
NEWS: Portland to consider letting voters decide on new police oversight system, city auditor says it’s too soon
I always knew that being a public figure advocating for change as a Blacktina woman would put me at risk to get death threats by racists, but it doesn't make it any easier to receive them. I love Portland, but please understand the cost for women of color who use their voices. ✊🏾
For the record, I'm a HARD PASS on Portland Police having the ability to pre-review body cam footage before writing their reports. 🙅🏾♀️
If they want to review footage and write a supplemental report AFTER their initial report, fine. We need their untainted version of events first!
Portlanders are so nice 🥺 they see a chubby Blacktina out here tryna run off all this election + pandemic stress weight and they give me a thumbs up & cheer me on 😭 thanks y'all, I definitely need the encouragement because this is hard 😩🏃🏾♀️
A close Electoral College count is NOT the same as a close race. Trump has already lost by 4 million votes AND COUNTING. It's clear more Americans do not support the tired, archaic, racist ideals of the Republican party. And they haven't for the last 7 out of 8 elections. BYE! 👋🏾
EXCITING NEWS:

Check out my debut column out today: "Solutions to our national divisions begin at home"
@wweek
This town doesn't deserve the countless women of color who actually make the change Portlanders cry out for only to dump them immediately the moment they threaten your power, scapegoating them for the damage the problematic men you support created. Shameful & grotesque. 0/10
✨ Blacktina News: I am excited to announce I am joining the
@StreetRoots
Board! 😅
I'm committed to making Portland a city where it's socially and politically unacceptable for our neighbors to remain houseless and feel incredibly lucky to join passionate advocates in that work!
PORTLAND'S SUCCESS HINGES ON A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH MULTNOMAH COUNTY AND CURRENTLY ALL 4 SEATS ARE UP FOR ELECTION IN 3 MONTHS BUT SOME ARE RUNNING UNOPPOSED AND NO ONE SEEMS TO BE PAYING ATTENTION EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A HUGE IMPACT ON THE ISSUES PORTLANDERS CARE ABOUT.
I won't even repost that video of the Tacoma police car running over a dozen people because it's SICK. 🤮
Even more sick as I think about how unlikely it is that there will be consequences. 🤢
The urgency of addressing police crowd escalation & violence is dire!
THAT'S A WRAP: The Portland Charter Commission officially ended our final meeting today after TWO YEARS of incredibly hard and rewarding work. Not only did voters pass charter amendments to transform our city, we also just put a bunch more today on future ballots!
WE DID IT! 🥳
Portland is NOT perfect. We have so much to work on in our quest to correct the injustices towards the Black community. But damn it WE CARE. And we don't back down. Don't dismiss this moment. We are on the verge of HUGE STRUCTURAL CHANGE. Stay focused y'all. 🙏🏾

Serious question: where do we as a city, as a society, expect people who live outside to exist? Especially when we've been inefficient and slow to provide safe shelter and housing options for them?
This cycle of harm only gets us further from our goals.
"Each morning, Wheeler receives a briefing from PPB leadership about the previous nights’ protests, which inform his understanding of a movement meant to dismantle the police force. He’d do well to start giving the same type of attention to the people calling for change."
Imagine using your emergency declaration powers to further criminalize and displace houseless Portlanders instead of using that SAME power to oh I don't know, actually house them??? Disgraceful and inhumane.
I wish former Commissioner Hardesty nothing but rest and peace. 🖤 What she endured in our city is abominable and as we prepare to possibly elect more women of color onto the city council we cannot forget the vitriol directed at our leaders who dare to speak truth to power.
Former Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty has accepted $680,000 from the city’s police union & 2 officers to settle claims that officers shared information that falsely implicated her of committing a hit-and-run.
This concludes the legal fight:
This makes NO SENSE. Reversing infrastructure, from a bureau with a giant deficit, because of a supposed "lack of public process" is so cursed. There were other solutions available and yet they chose the most regressive one. Madness!
I'm sitting here, staring at a blank google doc, trying to write my next column. But all I can do is grieve for the state of our city and our country. I don't have the answers and I desperately wish I did. We need harm reduction all around and we need it now.
Portland City Council has officially passed the camping ban ordinance, creating a dire situation for the vulnerable communities on our streets and the service providers who will have to work tirelessly to support these humans and reduce harm. A sad day for Portland.
Reading reports that the police (was it Feds or PPB or both???) started gassing people as soon as the Commissioner left the event.
Truly appalling!!! 😤
If they will only use restraint when our elected officials are around then please STAY and stand with the people!
"Mingus Mapps said implementing the [charter] reforms will be like “trying to launch to the moon” from an idea scribbled on the back of a napkin."
🙄 Reporters stop giving so much airtime to bad faith actors with hyperbolic assertions challenge.
Good news: I'm officially a Portland Charter Commissioner! 🥳🎉 I promise to give it my all and will help lead an inclusive process that brings all Portlanders to the table to envision a charter that best serves our city. 💜
Watch my statement here 👇🏾
Thank you for speaking up about this Comm Hardesty, but it's not lost on me that we continuously ask and expect our ONLY Black commissioner to constantly answer to the excessive force of PPB. Where's the rest of the City Council? The Police Commissioner? Why are they silent? 🤔
Update: I've officially filed to run for Portland City Council 💪🏾✨
I BELIEVE IN PORTLAND. Because I see Portlanders every single day band together to make change and create community. 🤝 I'm running because I'm one of you.
Let's win this in Nov! ✊🏾🫶🏾
@tedwheeler
Why do you continue to be deliberately obtuse by refusing to acknowledge the harm this community has suffered at the hands of our own police? Why do you keep doubling down on this talking point? C'mon Mayor. Admit when you've made mistakes and be honest! Please! 🙏🏾
I'm sick of this!!!! What is the justification for continuously brutalizing the public for having the audacity to protest police brutality!? I mean really, where are those "de-escalation" tactics we supposedly train our officers to do? And are these officers even from PPB!?
America needs to seriously build an army of THERAPISTS. From the extreme trauma most of us faced in 2020 and a country sick with maladjusted people, we need to put in some serious work to help people dig themselves out of depression, anxiety, and hopelessness.

Someone just sent me this in the mail from an address in Vancouver, Wa ☹️😰 Should I report it? What do I do in these kinds of situations!? It's my first time, but doesn't feel like it'll be the last time someone targets me like this. 😤
@jordonaut
Yeah, this checks out. 💯
East coasters are way more proactive in general, and I've really had to adjust since living in the west coast. Lots of platitudes out here. I prefer the more laid back lifestyle of the west coast, but I miss the get-ish-done attitude of the east coast.
@BlairStenvick
That's EXACTLY what I experienced when I moved to Portland. I had a boyfriend who would always talk crap about anyone living "east of 82nd" and I tried to explain to him that those attitudes turn into policies that neglect those neighborhoods. He didn't get it of course.

There are so many things I want to say about the city council race. But the most important thing is a huge THANK YOU to Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty for her courage, her voice, her passion for vulnerable communities, & her accomplishments on council.
We Love You
@JH4PDX
🖤
I have officially been reappointed to another 3 year term on the Citizen Review Committee! And tonight at our monthly meeting we have elections and I plan to run for chair again. 😌
81% of Portland voters want Real Police Accountability and we're gonna make sure it gets done! 💪🏾
Thank you to everyone who has sent me encouraging and kind messages. I appreciate you so much.
I'm angry. I'm hurt. I'm scared.
But most of all, I'm DETERMINED to continue pissing off racists. 🤷🏾♀️
BLACK LIVES MATTER ✊🏾 and we will NOT let racism stop us. Love y'all, be safe 💓
I really don't get what the big rush to dine in restaurants is? Just order take out. You'll be fine + you'll be protecting those workers that NO DOUBT have little money, little benefits & little power to protect themselves from COVID-19. Is the dine-in experience worth all that?
It's Official: I'm now the Chair of the Citizen Review Committee! 😄 I care about this work and will do everything I can to turn the community's demands for accountability of our police into tangible actions in the coming weeks and months 👍🏾
Get involved:
It bothers me to hear commissioners talk about how bleak the city is and how bad our reputation is, opinions that tend to come from status quo figures who don't want to change the city in ways that would actually benefit the most marginalized feeling the impacts of inaction. 🥴
The Charter Review Commission OFFICIALLY voted to forward our recommendations WITH A SUPERMAJORITY to the November 2022 ballot for the people of Portland to decide on our NEW proposed form of government and city elections reforms! 🥳🎉👏🏾
Rene Gonzalez says he will mandate that all his staff work in the office of City Hall EVERY DAY. 🫠
lmao talk about being out of touch! Read the room. 🙃
Mingus Mapps says he "respects the will of the voters" and then sends out this email very clearly signaling that he still thinks he knows better and will be sabotaging the effort to implement charter reform.
They will stop at nothing to deter voter's will and we must fight back!
Portland's "power brokers" responsible for dropping almost a million dollars to defeat Commissioner Hardesty have officially been identified, and the list is not surprising. All they care about is what's best for them, not what's best for Portland. 👎🏾
I'm just numb. You don't even have enough time to grieve one murder before the next one happens. It's sick. I pretend to be okay. I read emails, I show up to meetings, I smile. But I'm not okay. We're not okay.
The patronizing "we need more evaluation" talking point to deny sufficient funding for community supported services that can actually make a difference in minimizing contact with an institution that constantly fails to produce outcomes is not lost on me.
Portland's so called "anarchist jurisdiction" now has a City Council comprised of Ted, Jo Ann, Carmen, Dan, and Mingus. Wow. This does not bring me comfort for a city that will no doubt be the target of more right wing extremism, regardless if Trump wins or loses. Just wow. 😐

In less than an hour, I'll be facing 12 zoom boxes filled with bright eyed students who want to make a difference in the world in my first class of the term, and I am trying to muster the strength and hope to find words to inspire them amid today's chaos.
