Thank you
@PaulHoskisson
and
@IanDEALidbury
for a fantastic afternoon of all things green tea, staph and directed evolution!
Very lucky to have been the final
@foster_lab
PhD student!!
An angry Monday morning story in a 🧵
@PandemicPGRs
@UCUPostgrads
@AcademicChatter
So
@sheffielduni
pay their PGRs quarterly, ridiculous in itself, meaning PGRs get their stipend in four payments in the year and have to budget for three month periods 1/6
I really didn’t know what I was missing out on
#microbio22
was the perfect first conference! Massive thanks to everyone
@MicrobioSoc
for organising such an amazing week and all the awesome ECRs that made it the coolest week!! 🧫🔬
A very happy me after a COVID secure first unit!! Happy that long overdue guidance changes for risk assessing donors have finally came into effect 🏳️🌈
@GiveBloodNHS
Guess which tortured academic just submitted all 253 pages and 53k words of their thesis 👉🏻👈🏻
Thanks
@foster_lab
and
@DiMeN_DTP
for everything!
(I can’t say I was expecting the captcha to be that challenging)
I didn’t think today could keep going downhill after three job rejections including because of quote “a personality clash”… but.. the gorgeous barista isn’t at work 🥲
Thank you all for all the well wishes after the viva, I might amend the “it takes a village to do a PhD”- I reckon it takes a large multi city community inc everyone in Sheff
@DiMeN_DTP
and beyond ❤️❤️
Logged onto my first ever
@MicrobioSoc
conference while zooming through Somerset, so excited for a week of the coolest science 🧫 and (virtually) meeting all you wonderful scientists 🧑🔬 (thanks to
@GWRHelp
for hosting at 125 mph)
#Microbio21
THISSSS!! I’m looking at you academia, even do 8 online interviews then invite 2 or 3 best candidates to site and pay the expenses for those that don’t get the role!!
@AcademicChatter
If you’re doing in-person interviews that require candidates to come to you, you really should be paying for the travel.
No, “the opportunity” is not enough in return.
If it matters enough to meet people face to face, it matters enough to pay for it.
This is effectively me this evening compiling all of my recent tweets into a coherent letter to send to my MP and students union. Lets take the fight to them
@PandemicPGRs
#postgradsmatter
I might be a *teensy* bit biased but

Historically ukri have managed to get away with so much because they can outlast the most tenacious PGRs, but I have a feeling this is only the beginning
@UKRI_News
#AcademicTwitter
#AcademicChatter
PGRs are making daily requests to
@UKRI_NEWS
to engage with our community’s highly reasonable and evidence-led requests. UKRI continue to demonstrate a callous lack of willingness here
We are therefore calling all PGR’s to boycott ResearchFish this year

maybe the payments team could check for students registered at different times??

Take this Oct 1st payment, PGRs haven’t been paid since July 1st and are under significant pressure to manage their money due to CoL, with the crucial

A lifeline for UKRI funded students, but part of a longer fight for PGRs across the country.

A fantastic final talk in the weekly seminar series by Marisa Gomez! And a massive thank you to

@dbkell
Not commenting on the politics or the numbers but its impressive what's been achieved day on day. Many of the students and post-docs involved have come straight from university lockdowns and put in huge work but no one seems interested in their hard work.
Me with a tote bag, big coat and a suitcase heading to Newcastle in November? It means it’s time for this years

Come and see my talk in tomorrows’ microbiology session to learn about MRSA and green tea 🍵🧫
Students wait for the notification of payment which they don’t receive, Having been completely missed off the payments, PGRs have to contact a team who have an email waiting time of 10-15 days or phone lines open 10-1 daily to arrange to be paid for the next 3 months 4/6
Important to highlight how serious the circumstances to take leave of absences can be as well, by missing students who have taken LOA you are target minorities and vulnerable groups
@ucu
@UCUPostgrads
Do better
@sheffielduni
- you are financially punishing vulnerable students for taking leave of absences (which are only taken in serious circumstances) and providing no communication or avenues for support.
@ucu
@UCUPostgrads
Absolutely storming 1st draft thesis corrections atm. Keep forgetting what time it is. Only remembering lunch at 3:30 and really enjoying the reward of crossing out each page as I finish it..
In unrelated news it’s coming up to a year since a certain referral got sent off
