I don’t think non-pre-Katrina New Orleanians fully understand the trauma most of us have regarding evacuation.
So many things. Did you leave and come back to destruction? Get stuck with abusive relatives in contraflow for hours? Have to get rescued? See bodies? Hear the levees?
Y’all. Come see this. I got a random FaceTime the other day and didn’t respond. Got a text from the person; called me “auntie” and said he needed fashion advice. Then today… 🤣
@LeciJ_
They are asking entirely too much! Like the ones who have to wear a uniform to sit on the tablet at home. WHAT?! No pajamas and all that. A shame. I bet she learned todaaaaay!
I AM SO BLESSED. That is all. Ya girl is writing about gumbo for
@bonappetit
. That's crazy! One of my dreams! WHEW! Lemme make my lil pull quotes and video in anticipation of the Friday drop...
Also, happy Halloween weekend from Sandra Clark
@JackeeHarry
! Looking for a fiiiiiine, rich, successful man this Halloween. Don’t tell that boring old Maaaaary. 💃🏽 🤑 💋
1. WOW! I was just being myself and this got so much love! Thanks, bc I spent my whole weekend and whew the money.
2. BLESSED bc even a few months ago, I couldn’t have afforded this. Used to struggle so I’m still on edge TBH.
3. Black history stuff is from
@teachercreated
! ✊🏾
Nearly everyone I’ve talked to today, strangers in passing and actual friends, we all are really torn about leaving/staying, often for traumatic reasons.
SO. HOES, before you count New Orleans out and scold us for staying, I urge you to consider our reasoning.
Be blessed.
@kaithurz
So proud of her! Do you have a Cash App so I can send her some treat money? Baby girl deserves a treat, and Imma pay.
Shiiiiid I might even try to write it off as a campaign contribution, because our niece is going places in leadership!
Essence tip for fellow New Orleanians, especially natives: Understand that they only want a caricature of New Orleans. They want “NOLA” and our leadership & tourism provide & encourage that because that’s how they put money into the city. Money we’ll neither see nor benefit from.
Honestly I’ll never get over Hurricane Katrina. Not just bc I lost so much stuff etc, but the New Orleans I knew is just gone. And it was taken so rapidly, replaced by so much fuck shit.
I like “NOLA,” but I grieve for New Orleans. REAL BAD. Always will.
@RoxanneSilver
@msolurin
“I got my headshots in February and they already feel outdated” isn’t a question, maw. It’s not her asking for advice, or a “suggestion.” It’s a DECLARATIVE statement.
4. HUG A TEACHER! PAY THEM! They work NONSTOP and spend a LOT of money.
5. You’ve got gifts to shower your baby with. I have creativity but not patience, por ejemplo. This is classic Megan for me. Taurus sun, Virgo moon, Libra rising. Born to be extra, while just feeling normal.
My New Orleans breakfast guide for
@infatuation
is live and I’m sooooo excited! Before you DM me, YES these are all restaurants I hand picked and have visited recently. Some, over and over for years. NO I DID NOT “FORGET” ANYTHING. 🍳🥞☕️
Reading about changes in food coverage in New Orleans, but wondering where the black food writers — especially women — are. Oh that’s right! Still here, just not being hired. 🙃
What breaks my heart about the cashless Jazz Fest situation, is that kids can no longer enjoy it. IDK if schools even bring kids anymore, but we used to pool our lil cash and split something. Everything was much more affordable then.
@jazzfest
isn’t for us at all. Only tourists.
When I think of the video incident with our mayor, I’m reminded of how so many people hate to see Black women speak up for themselves. In little ways and in big ways.
Did I mention this? Excited to be honored by the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund for my continued contributions to Literary Arts and Humanities! ⚜️🙏🏾🏆
If y’all are sick of Black people FROM here telling you about how so much of Carnival is not only racist, but also elitist, sexist, ableist, etc, maybe you should look in the mirror.
Regarding STRs, it's very fucking simple to just outlaw them all. And the neat thing is that people CAN STILL MAKE MONEY RENTING THEM OUT!
There are these cool folks called "tenants." They are part of the fabric of any city. Especially a city gentrifying quickly as New Orleans.
Also, as always, Molly/
@YvonneOrji
is my entire mood. “Everybody is still in the running, til they disqualify themselves.”
So glad to see her getting all vibrant and happy and flirtatious AF again. Forever the character I relate to most.
#InsecureHBO
Perplexed as to why any New Orleanians attended Nyx.
Most of y’all are aware that the krewe just… isn’t. What do you think you’d catch?
Do we not recall all of what went on with them?! Couldn’t be me, begging for throws from folks who support racism & overall bad behavior.
Housing is a human right. Period. People should be able to afford to buy or rent near their jobs, their kids' schools, etc. But thanks to folks being greedy w/STRs--in addition to gentrification which largely moves at the same rate of STR penetration--they can't. 1/n
Fun fact: I grew up in New Orleans in the 80s and 90s mostly without AC. My elementary school was raising money for it in the 90s, but we mostly just had the windows open. Global warming is a whole hoe outchea.
NEW ARTICLE! Excited and so blessed to write for
@infatuation
, about food in my NATIVE and ANCESTRAL land, where I lay my head and pay my taxes. 🖤 Here’s our latest update of New Orleans’ best restaurants!

This is really beautiful outreach from

. My speaker was the only fancy thing that brought me joy. So. Much. JOY! The burglars left the two TVs but took the speaker, so you already know. 😅

Hey Megan! We're sorry to hear about your house getting broken into - we'd like to replace your Move. Sending you a DM so we can get your shipping information. 🔊 ♥️
LISTEN, I am not worried. What’s finna happen, finna happen. I refuse to stress about something I can’t control. God forbid something awful happens, we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
Glad that so far, the only articles I’ve seen about Ida from people in/evacuated from New Orleans are from people born and raised here.
Thank GOD.
Now listen, I’m a whole ass journalist with WiFi, a laptop and time.
Editors, holla if you need a personal essay!

Well today I turned the photo into an IG reel, and y'all helped share it, and THE GIRL COMMENTED! I'm putting the photo in the mail today. So excited, the most excited I've been in quite some time! 3/3
Hey
@seanfeucht
, we New Orleanians neither requested nor required this. This stunt you pulled was dangerous and put so many at risk. Were you hoping to “save souls” and then send them up to the Lord in a few months, because that’s the trajectory I’m seeing.
I've been thinking a lot about the issues that continue to affect black New Orleanians and can't get past the fact that there's a 25 year difference in life expectancy between "culture bearers" in Treme and folks in Lakeview.
How does this happen?
A thread:
If you wanna give non-monetary donations to Hurricane Laura victims, don’t you dare give them your trash. New is best, new and good. Not no off-brand junk and certainly not dirty, nasty and/or overused stuff. THROW YOUR TRASH AWAY. It’s not about you, it’s about THEM. (1)

I say this with no tea, no shade. It’s wild how different Black New Orleans is from white New Orleans. Completely different experiences, for the most part. I’m sure that’s how it is in most big cities...
Fun fact about me: I refuse to pay for parking in New Orleans. My people been here for generations, ALL THIS SHIT IS MINE.
So I just park a mile or so away and walk if it’s meter time. (Or I park at Harrah’s for 30-cent parking.)
I’m a muthafucking multigenerational New Orleans native, ain’t shit none of you transplant hoes can ever add to my fucking conversations about my city. Bitch, EVER.
DO NOT COMPLAIN ABOUT THE COLD! I always tell y’all to complain about whatever you want and blah blah freedom but NO. This is enjoyable! Heat can kiss my ass. LAYER if you’re cold, greater New Orleans area!
Please STFU with the “parents shoulda kept them home” talk. Not everyone has that luxury. If you’re already living paycheck to paycheck and get fired — which you can for anything or nothing at anytime here — then bills pile up, shit gets cut off, you get evicted, be hungry…
He ain't lying. New Orleans is NOT for us anymore. "Built to host," and that's it. In 10 years, if we don't act NOW, this will just be a place for us to visit, paying folks from outta town to stay in OUR grandmothers' houses.

@CityOfNOLA
sweeping up everything that makes New Orleans, New Orleans. We’ve become a shell of ourselves and it’s by the hands of outsiders & the 5 families that run this city… Sad times.
Guess what?! Few years back I bought a photo at a thrift store. Such a pretty little Black girl. I told myself I was gonna get that photo back to her, whoever she was. Because that's something I think about every time I see photos in the thrift store, whose photos are these?! 1/3
Still love my career, but I have a book to write and cannot write it while doing freelance writing to simply pay bills. A steady, remote editing position would be great! So here’s my résumé! YES, this is how they look in my field. Please RT this thread! Thank you. 🌸
I really miss old New Orleans, when you could take your kid to a bar any day, even in the evening. When I tell you I was raised at Mule's. Singing and dancing on the bar, fries and Shirley Temples with extra cherries.
High school girls: THAT OLD ASS MAN DOES NOT THINK YOU'RE MATURE. He wants to use you, period. Women his age know he's trash, so he's trying his luck with you.
Saw a comment to a tweet that reminded me... DO NOT ASK STRANGERS ABOUT THEIR TRAUMA ALL WILLY NILLY!
Don’t ask New Orleanians about Katrina!
Next time someone asks me, I’m saying an alligator ate my mama.
Know what I miss about Mardi Gras parades? The smell of beads mixed with rain, smoke from poppers and float decorations.
The feeling of stepping on beads, the sound of that. Getting my feet tangled in plastic bags when I walk. Kicking broken throws.
Wiping wet throws on pants.
As much as I enjoy writing listicles, because it’s easy money and a way to help local businesses, I am sooooo excited to share my first article for

Can’t stand to see people post about voter turnout and political awareness etc using the “but y’all be at the Saints games/second lines/buying Jordans” foolishness. Baby voter suppression is REAL. I’m a super smart girl, but read the amendments with my finger sometimes! 1/6
Donuts on the Lake with my soon-to-be 2nd grader! He’s such a big boy!
(But still small enough that I worried the seagulls thought he was a large fish.)
Today makes 19 years without my best friend. Please believe I’m living like her today, in *all* the ways. We cutting up, her and my other angels finna hold it down for me. Happy spirit birthday, Mommy! 👼🏻
