@palis These are the punks of AI—we're getting there!
4/5 The collection takes some effort to fully appreciate. Remember your initial reaction to CryptoPunks? Squiggles? This collection is being met with similar initial skepticism. So I wrote this post to help people understand it

@NavalismHQ @naval But the subjective interpretations of truth will likewise be infinite in a world of infinite capital, labour and compute. The only scarce thing will be atoms in the universe.

Thanks! Woke up and saw this, so thought to chime in with my two cents. Probably will be lost in the void (and one person even thought that is this is an AI-generated response lololol). But if anything, treating this as practice as we'll have to make the same arguments again and again... If anything the critical use of AI in art will help illuminate the shortcomings of AI as a tech—find it incredible how some artists themselves can't see this.

@sakuracloud_ @Alf_ArGzz @Rahll @ChristiesInc Not all artworks that incorporate AI are made this way. Some artists create their own datasets and train their own models too lol

@monkantony_tez @cavvia @hollyherndon @matdryhurst Leaning towards team centaur as well. This is all more the so given that art is an open-ended game, where the rules, if any, are adaptive rather than prescriptive.

@SamSpratt Good Masquerade! Would love to be added to this list too 🙏
Pedigree and patina; masks and masquerades Earlier this month, I wrote out a long-form essay on my blog setting out my views on how demand for NFTs can be deconstructed, taking into account their role as status assets (🔗 in next tweet 👇). One of the four demand pillars I articulated was "pedigree". NFTs with such quality would be primarily sought after by the aspiring "crypto influential" class to differentiate themselves from their "crypto rich" peers. Such "pedigree" NFTs are valuable because they embody traits or aspects that money cannot buy. They generally demand work on the part of their collectors, either by holding them for long periods of time or nurturing a special relationship with the creators. These extrinsic actions imbue further value to the NFTs, injecting an aura of historicity to them, much like the patina on certain physical objects. In my essay, I cited @SamSpratt's Skulls of Luci as an example of an artwork with this quality of "pedigree", given the responsibility that a Skull demands of its owner—to give a part of themselves to the development of Sam's body of work—and the ensuing opportunity to leave a unique and meaningful imprint on the artifact of the Skull itself. Today, seeing Sam announce further details on Masquerade, the next chapter in the story of Luci, I am incredibly excited for a couple of reasons: • Sam is expanding the space for even more people to play a part in contributing to his artmaking. This means more invitations into his little world, more collisions with the lore of Luci, and ultimately, more opportunities to build a pedigree that can stand the test of time. • The theme of Masquerade ties in closely with the foundational premise of my essay: humans are fundamentally status-seeking creatures. We are compelled by our evolutionary inheritance to masquerade in the neverending improv performance of society. The identities we enact, as well as the objects we desire and display, reflect the imperative to defend or gain status vis-à-vis our peers. It will be very interesting to see how these status-related dynamics play out as the party begins. Having missed out on participating in The Monument Game as my bank froze my credit card while trying to mint a Player back in 2023, I've been content watching Luci's story continue from the sidelines, while trying to leave my own breadcrumbs along the way. But now that another pathway opens up yet again into the unfolding story of Luci, I cannot help but pine for another chance. This time to join the party, to play a different game—not to consecrate monuments, but to conjure masks. In this regard, I would like to step forward as a humble candidate for an invitation. To all Players: what I can commit to is to work with you towards cultivating pedigree and position our relationship for posterity, such that the masks we wear can form a patina that will only be more beautiful with time.

That's a fair point. Subjectivity is inherent to the human condition, so it is only natural that we have different preferences and inclinations. My view though is that it is very hard to divorce the human from the artificial, even in the case of Keke. I see it in a similar way to biological evolution: just like how we share a common ancestor with pretty much all living things and thus share certain features (depending on our respective evolutionary lineage), AI will always contain a trace of human imprint by virtue of being created by humans and trained (at least initially) on human-made data. One key difference between Botto and Keke, as you've alluded to, is therefore how salient this human imprint is in their underlying systems. For Botto, it is more explicit, while for Keke, it seems more abstracted—and therein perhaps lies the difference between our preferences. Both Botto and Keke are gunning for autonomy, just working towards it in different ways (and I believe there is space for different methodologies towards this). Let's see how the story for both unfolds :)
