Elsie has arrived at Arbutus Station!
Elsie’s breakthrough today looked very similar to TBM Phyllis’ arrival in late March, pictured here.
In this shot, you can see Phyllis’ cutterhead poking through and rubble collected inside the pressure chamber.
This past Friday afternoon, TBM Phyllis launched from South Granville Station! She is now on the final leg of her journey to Cypress St, where she will be dismantled and removed.
Here’s a shot of Phyllis during her pit stop at South Granville Station.
At South Granville Station, stairs are being constructed in the station entrance. Two escalators will be installed later, one on either side of the stairs.
Glass windows have already been installed at ground level - can you see how the light pours into the station entrance?
Our first
#TunnelBoringMachine
broke through into the future Mount Pleasant Station box last night!
TBM Elsie bored a 6m-wide hole in the east wall of the station. Once the
#BroadwaySubwayProject
is complete, eastbound trains will exit the station via Elsie’s tunnel!
Take a sneak peek at Arbutus Station’s platform level. 👀
This level is where passengers will board the SkyTrain. The platform will be constructed in the middle, where the columns are, with the tracks on either side.
There is no SkyTrain in the
#BroadwaySubwayProject
tunnels yet, but there is a different kind of transit! 🚌
The multi-service vehicle gets crews and equipment where they need to go. Here it is at the future Mount Pleasant Station, with Broadway & Main Street about 17 m above.
This section of tunnel is where the SkyTrain transitions from the elevated guideway to the underground station.
Crews have completed the concrete base to allow for the track installation. This final layer, called the track slab, will have tracks installed on top of it.
Welcome to South Granville,
#TunnelBoringMachine
Elsie!
Here’s an action shot of Elsie breaking through the east wall of the future station yesterday around 2:30pm.
Following scheduled maintenance, she’ll join already-departed TBM Phyllis as they make their way to Cypress St.
Overnight around midnight,
#TunnelBoringMachine
Phyllis launched from Broadway-City Hall! She is now en route to the future Oak-VGH Station.
Once complete, Phyllis' tunnel will be used for trains travelling westbound towards Arbutus Station.
Did you know that each new Broadway Subway station will feature up and down escalators?
The first escalator trusses, which house the electrical and mechanical equipment, were installed at South Granville Station in July. An elevator will later be constructed to the left.
#TunneBoringMachine
Phyllis broke through at Oak-VGH Station last night just after 9:30 pm! 🎉🎉🎉
Phyllis will now undergo maintenance & move through the pre-excavated station before continuing on to the future South Granville Station.
Near VCC-Clark Station, a new section of elevated guideway for the

tunnel leading away from the Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station site.
TBM Elsie is more than halfway to her first stop at the future Mount Pleasant Station and is set to arrive in January.
This mined tunnel under Cambie St will connect the Canada Line and future Millennium Line platforms at Broadway-City Hall Station.
The excavator seen here is on the west side of Cambie St, clearing debris after tunnel excavation was completed in February.
Excavation at the future South Granville Station is now complete! 🎉
The final depth of this station is about 18 metres. Now, crews continue work on the station foundation to prepare for the arrival of the TBMs.
Underground between GNW-Emily Carr and Mount Pleasant Stations, crews have started pouring concrete inside the tunnels.
In this photo, the tunnel is prepped for the 2 concrete pours needed to create a platform for SkyTrain tracks.
Rebar is being installed on top of the orange waterproofing membrane at the future South Granville Station!
The orange membrane will keep the station dry, and the rebar will reinforce the station’s base slab foundation. Next, crews will pour the concrete foundation.
Take a look at this fresh concrete wall inside the future Mount Pleasant Station!
This completed section of wall is located on the south side of the platform level of the station.
Can you spot TBM Elsie’s tunnel towards GNW-Emily Carr in the background?
This is the “transition box,” where SkyTrain tracks will transition from the elevated guideway to the underground station at GNW-Emily Carr.
Unlike the round tunnels under Broadway made by TBMs, these tunnels will be square-shaped.
On October 28, Tunnel Boring Machine Elsie broke through at Oak-VGH Station!
With this milestone, both TBMs have now:
👷♀️Reached 4 out of 6 station sites
👷♀️ Bored 2km of parallel tunnels
👷♀️ Installed a total of 2,600 concrete-liner rings in the tunnels
Did you know the tunnels between each of the six
#BroadwaySubwayProject
stations will be about 720 m long?

This photo was taken from inside the new service rooms for the Mount Pleasant Station.
In the future, a wall will separate these rooms from the public area of the platform level.
The future Mount Pleasant Station continues to take shape at Broadway and Main Street.
Can you see where crews are installing temporary supports for the next level? This will be a section of roof for the underground portion of the station.
Here at Oak-VGH, the concrete base for the SkyTrain tracks is being installed. On the left, you can see a completed segment, while crews construct the next segment on the right.
The train platform will be built in the middle of the station, with tracks running on either side.
Crews are installing track switches on the elevated guideway. These switches will allow SkyTrains to change tracks and enter a third track, called a pocket track.
Switch machines will be installed later, which are needed to move the rails into different positions.
Following scheduled maintenance,

station.
This tunnel will pass underneath the entrance to the existing station!
The roof is going up at GNW-Emily Carr Station. This is the first station roof to be constructed, out of the 6 stations.
This photo shows all 3 levels of the station: the platform level, the concourse level & preparations for the station roof underway in the background.
This is where the SkyTrain transitions from above-ground elevated guideway to below-ground tunnel.
Notice that the concrete base for the SkyTrain tracks is slanted slightly to the left. This allows for a more comfortable ride as the SkyTrain rounds the corner.
Walls are going up at the future Arbutus Station!
Here, blue formwork is being used to pour concrete walls on both sides of the platform area. This temporary formwork is used to create a space to pour concrete into. It then supports the concrete while it hardens & strengthens.
Here at the future South Granville Station, you can take an insider peek at what a freshly poured concrete base slab foundation looks like!
After each pour, the concrete is covered & allowed to set. Once the required strength is achieved, the finished concrete can be revealed.
Ever wonder what happens to material as it’s excavated by the
#TunnelBoringMachines
?
The material, called "muck" all lands here in the "muck pit" at Great Northern Way before being trucked away. If you see muck moving along the conveyor system, the TBMs are boring!
Just before 2am on Saturday,
#TunnelBoringMachine
Phyllis had her 1st breakthrough @ the future Mount Pleasant Station! 🎉
Now Phyllis, just like Elsie before her, will receive maintenance & move through the pre-excavated station before continuing to Broadway-City Hall Station.
Crews have almost completed the concrete deck of the elevated guideway, which connects VCC-Clark to the future GNW-Emily Carr Station.
This photo from September shows a concrete deck with rebar work in the background in preparation for further concrete pours.
Assembly of the first
#TunnelBoringMachine
is under way at the future GNW-Emily Carr Station site!
Yesterday, the bottom of the TBM's front shield, which will sit behind the cutterhead, was placed into a concrete cradle as the machine begins to take shape.
Does this look familiar? 👀
The track that will connect VCC-Clark to GNW-Emily Carr Station is taking shape, reflecting the look of existing Millennium Line elevated guideway near VCC-Clark!
A noteworthy moment at Arbutus station! The first concrete pour for the base slab took place on September 22.
In this photo crews were installing rebar and conduits prior to the pour.

Here, crews had completed the first out of four concrete rings for the tunnel structure.
The elevated guideway is taking shape!
Crews have installed more than half of the 106 girders needed to connect the 21 columns between VCC-Clark and the future Great Northern Way-Emily Carr Station.
Check out this “umbrella” at the future Mount Pleasant Station. Not your usual umbrella! ☂️
This umbrella is a system of steel pipes drilled above where the TBM will break through. They redistribute the weight of the ground above the tunnel to either side of its entrance.
Crews are constructing the concrete base to allow for track installation. The tracks will be installed on top of this final concrete layer.
Notice how the tracks will be slightly slanted to the left? This allows for a more comfortable ride as the SkyTrain rounds the corner.
