@BarbaraBleiman I remember being very surprised when taking an English exam (in an ancient university) by a fill in the blanks section to associate authors' names with their works, historical period and so on. This kind of external knowledge was so NOT what an education in English was about.

@BarbaraBleiman Jane was quietly supportive when I began working with the NATE Post-16 committee. I remember discussing with her a draft paper on assessment: her suggestion to resurrect the Idea of āfitness for purposeā was exactly right.

@rsoltysek2024 We know that learning isnāt a delivery of knowledge into an insert brain. If knowledge means anything to the learner, they process it according to their previous knowledge & experience. This is why good classroom talk is so important, so learners can develop their ideas.

@CarolynRuane @MichaelRosenYes āTeachers as Writersā do good work too. The answer to your question of course is that authority doesnāt want too many children (or teachers) to be expressive. Back in the late 18c, Hannah More approved of children learning to read but not to write ā¦.
