I've never been more convinced of the inevitability of war between the US and China as I am now. Not just based on public info, but private info from friends working in/adjacent to DC. DC is in a foul, belligerent mood right now. Downright scary stuff.

I agree, if China GdP was +2.5%, it would be generous. And, to boot, the quarterly rates make no sense, esp the upwardly revised 1.5%for Q3, which is balderdash. Economy prob going better over end year and early this, as stimulus kicks in. But sustainability ? Little.

One of the top reasons why Indian elites think they rule a country with a GDPpc of $40,000, is that the West has fellated India relentlessly since the end of the Cold War as the anti-China, which has led to delusions of grandeur.

This is the funniest revisionism and memory holing by Western liberals. Deng was literally 10x more brutal domestically, and was way more adventurous in foreign policy than Xi, courting possible war with the Soviets in the 1979 Sino-Viet War.

I think the US genuinely believes that its military assistance to Taiwan is right, and China shouldn't respond, and that Chinese aid to Russia would be totally wrong, and should result in sanctions.

Conversely, the fact that Jews are a Western civ ethnic group is why they and the Holocaust are at the center of Western remembrance of WWII, and not say, Russian or Chinese civilians, who are just Orientals whose lives don't matter.

Thesis: Western liberals don't see nations as national homes for an ethno/religious/lingustic group (ie the traditional nation state model), but merely as economic vessels or tools for parochial identarian political projects (like multiculturalism or opposing China).

I never understood why Taiwan didn’t just let in millions of immigrants from the rest of Asia, turning itself into a thriving multicultural society. It solves 2 problems: the demographic one caused by falling birthdates and it makes Taiwan a very bitter pill for China to swallow

There was already anger against China among academics beginning under Obama and Trump, that China hadn't responded positively to "engagement", though the real reason was that China wasn't submitting to US hegemony. Now that anger is going to turn into a flood of ragetears.

I now think that US threats of further sanctions against China for supporting Russia are NOT contrived to furthering decoupling, by provoking China into supporting Russia. The explanation is simpler: US can't help itself but make threats, due to how arrogant primacy has made it.

The post-2018 cohort of engineers in China are its very own Manhattan Project generation. There's been a lot of movement in China this year in cutting edge sectors (not just microchips), which is one reason why I find Chinese GDP growth figures plausible.

Has anyone written a serious investigation into the relationship between South Korea's rock bottom fertility, and the fact that the country, specifically the Seoul metro area, is just insanely dense? I want to know if there is a definite causal linkage between density and TFR.

Just when you think South Korea‘s fertility rate may have bottomed out, it declines further. In Q1 2023, there were 6% fewer births than 2022. The TFR declined to 0.81 from 0.87 in Q1 2022 (in Seoul from 0.67 to 0.62).

Interesting to see the Blob talk itself into a war, in large part based on the perception that the Chinese economy is fake. Oh well. I guess they'll have to learn the hard way.

China’s economy is a basket case. It grew over the decades because the United States wanted it to grow as part of our strategy of incorporating China as a stakeholder in the rules based system. Now that China is challenging the system, the free world is kicking the ladder down.

This has implications way beyond just Africa. Many Anglo/Indians spent the 2000s talking about how India's tech/services/consumption driven economy would help it catch up to China. Oops.

@asemota No developing country has achieved mass employment without an actual vibrant manufacturing sector, it’s as close to a law of physics at this point. The masses in African countries will not reach salvation with tech no matter how much we wish it so.

The worst mistake the West made was not keeping India close. We could have had a bulwark against China of a billion English speaking capitalists. Washington arrogance pushed an ally away. All we got was Indian tech CEOs from a culture with no respect for free speech.

Ironic thing about US politics is that the outcome doesn't really matter that much to US citizens. They are super rich and inhabit a physically secure, invulnerable country. The hysteria over US politics is lib-coded partisanship, and foreigners mistake this for reality.

I know I’m discussing touchy shit, but fuggit: Israel’s opposition to Armenian genocide recognition, and the failure by various Chinese to make Nanjing Massacre commemoration a thing in the West in the 1990s, redpilled me on how utterly artificial the Holocaust obsession is.

It’s funny that until recently the ADL lobbied against recognizing the massacre of Armenians as a genocide because it diluted their clout. Imagine having such strong opinions on other people’s tragedies because it affects your ability to grift off your own.
