Design person. Currently working on MR stuff at
@Meta
. I like stuff and things. Previously
@Microsoft
,
@Google
,
@Tumblr
and a bunch of others things.
Now that I no longer work there, I will say that something I really disliked about Google (and this may just be a Big Tech thing and not unique to them) is how much of the job was self promoting and the theatrics of demonstrating impact.
I would love for
@apple
to share how many people on visas worked on the products they announced today.
@tim_cook
. People need to perspective on why this matters and why we should be outraged.
Today I learned that my manager worked on the team at Apple that turned NeXTSTEP into OS X. I jokingly asked if he created the genie effect... turns out he did... also magnification on the dock.
I love
@browsercompany
but it’s built on top of Chromium, has a limited user base, and likely doesn’t have the same localization, accessibility, and security standards as Chrome. It’s 100000x easier for them to ship new features.
@yaboivelvet
@NetflixGeeked
I feel like accusing this show of white washing, when they made multiple white characters black and hired Asian leads, is a bit lame. Ed was tan because she lived in the desert. She had a French/European name, and her dad was white.
UIs I’d love to design:
- airplane inflight entertainment system
- a smart tv’s built-in software
- a car’s nav/infotainment system
- a commercial espresso machine
- an enterprise multifunction printer
- the UI on an oven, refrigerator, or washing machine
What are everyone’s favorite
@figma
plug-ins? For a long time at work we haven’t allowed 3rd party ones, but we’ve just changed that and I have no idea what’s good.
It’s not at all surprising that a dude who invented a bland baby formula for adults because he was tired of deciding what to eat, one of the few joys in human life, has a terrible, privileged, and out of touch take on politics.
I’m managing a couple of designers at work and trying really hard to do the opposite of every shitty manager I’ve ever had. It turns out it’s not that hard to be a good manager!
What is the best prototyping tool these days? I find the feature set in
@figma
to be really limiting. I also find origami to be overkill for making basic demos quickly.
@jstn
@browsercompany
I don’t know why this stuff gets me so worked up, but I just hate the narrative that all teams at big companies are slow and unproductive. Yes, things move shower, but the stakes are higher and the processes are more rigid and often for good reason
Since that tweet about Google blew up, I just want to say that I am truly grateful for the 3 years I spent there (6 months as a contractor and 2.5 years as a full-time employee). I learned a ton, met awesome people, and did a lot of work I’m proud of.
This M1 MacBook Air may be the best computer I’ve ever used. Completely silent. I played a game via stadia in Chrome and then ran a graphics benchmark. It barely got warm. Everything feels fast. Apple really made a better computer... it’s fucking crazy.
Occasionally you find that one recruiter who treats you like an actual human being even when you don’t get the role. Been talking to one of those right now and I almost cried because they’ve been so helpful.
I don’t want to dox them, but they are at a FAANG company, amazingly.
Why isn’t there a great, well supported, easy to use advanced prototyping tool? Like the Figma of prototyping? Prototyping in Figma is extremely limited. Principle is the closest thing, but it’s one guy making it.
Sorry for all the depressing tweets, it’s just been kind of a shitty year between job searching, relationship stuff, losing a few close friends for various reasons, family stuff, and some health issues. Really a perfect storm of shit.
@Progressive
@BDayBoysMitch
Please shoot many more commercials with Mitch. I don’t own a car or even have a driver’s license, but it’s very important to me that you continue to give this great man work.
Shout out to
@elvin_not_11
for these
@googlechrome
dev and beta channel icons. He added texture, stitching, and realistic lighting to the ribbon. It even accounts for the bulge of the raised circle, with the text slightly skewed.
Installed this TV by myself today including fishing a cable through the wall and installing a pass through outlet.
Yes, I am single and my love language is acts of service. Think of the possibilities.
When I moved to NYC 10 years ago, nothing seemed too far away, I would take the subway or walk everywhere. Now, going to Williamsburg from Prospect heights seems like a hassle. I’ve become what I hated.
Just got an email from Google’s overpayment department about recovering $3,500 they somehow overpaid me. I know that person is just doing their job, but seriously, way to rub salt in the wound.
Shout out to all of the designers and developers at NYTimes, 538, Washington Post, Apple, and Google for making beautiful interface for tracking election results.
We’re altering the way we handle text in Figma. To find the right solution,
@mwichary
dove into the beautifully complex history of type and vertical alignment. More here:
Meta and other folks have done lots of research into AR/XR UI and found that users just want familiar interfaces. This might change as time goes on, but Apple is likely making an informed decision here with this UI.
If you’re hiring a designer at an enterprise company, you shouldn’t exclude designers who have only worked on consumer stuff. A good designer should be able to work on any kind of product on any platform.
A huge part of finding a job is being really persistent, kind of annoying, and constantly bothering people so they don’t forget about you. It sucks, but it’s honestly the only way to be successful. I really hate doing it.
After 6.5 years as an independent product designer, it looks like I'll be going in-house again soon. Very excited to share more once things are finalized.
It took me a really, really long time to find a full-time job I wanted to take. I’ve been interviewing off and on for the past couple of years. There were lots of rejections along the way too (this is the second time I interviewed at Google).
Also, if you ever want to see the real work that’s going on
@googlechrome
then check out chrome://flags for all of the things they’re experimenting with (publicly). Also chrome is on so many more platforms.
I took a weed gummy yesterday because my friend offered… it turns out it had 50mg of THC and I lost my fucking mind. Like, worst panic attack of my life.
Stop trying to hire designers with experience working on products identical to yours. If you’re using that to evaluate a designer, you don’t know what you’re doing. The product design process isn’t vastly different for enterprise vs consumer.
