Never thought a man and a chair would mean so much to me.
The Chair, written by me, illustrated by Coco Apunnguaq Lynge, and published by

I love you, Grampy. I’ll miss you forever.
These were little kids and adolescents. They had favourite foods. They got excited over butterflies. They had crushes and laughs unique to their personalities. Do not relegate them simply as graves to earmark a moment in time. These were kids and they had names.

I bought $400 of groceries for my Indigenous student centre kitchen while wearing my name tag and ID badge so naturally my cart was locked and checked for stolen goods. I just want to extend a heartfelt thank you to
@LoblawsON
for ruining what is my fav back to school tradition.
The average life expectancy for Indigenous men in Canada is 60 years old. Today my dad, Tim Redfeather Thomas turns 80. Join me in wishing my dad wli ajipuna! Happy Birthday, dad. Kesalul!
When I was broke, I would stretch $20 for groceries over two weeks. Today I put things in my cart without looking at the sticker. This is such a tremendous privilege.
I am 100% jumping to conclusions. The most recent deaths in NS ERs were women. Wmn who probably were feeling terrible for a while before they were urged to seek treatment. Wmn who have been conditioned to put others' needs before their own. Wmn whose pain was not taken seriously.
I know that HRM councillors follow me. I know MPs follow me. I know MLAs follow me. I'm calling on all of you to denounce what is happening to Mi'kmaq fishers and bring these issues to the nests of power you have the privilege participate in.
#NSpoli
.
My dad lost all his language when he went to the Shubenacadie Residential School in Nova Scotia so he couldn't teach me. I've been slowly picking up Mi'kmaq from my work with community. He just called me to ask me how to say "Hello, my name is..." and I was able to tell him! <3
Canada needs to be more outraged over the Kamloops IRS discovery. Imagine finding 215 kids buried on the grounds of your local elementary? The ones you send your kids to.
The NS Dept of Ed wanted to buy hundreds (1000s?) of copies of my book but wanted me to censor and remove 5 poems. One of them was titled "An Indian Called Sir" about growing up with a dad who went to IRS. Still feel the same after those 215 kids were found,

Today is a tough day for lots of us. We get to see non-Indigenous people, governments, and companies perform grief and understanding about a topic of which they cannot fathom it's experience. If there are Indigenous people in your life that go silent today, leave them alone.
As an Indigenous person who votes, I understand and respect the Indigenous folks who don't participate in this system of gov. I implore non-Native folks to vote for parties that will respect the rights of all Indigenous people b/c our rights precede Canada's parliament.
I can say this for sure, a wealthy white man who owned many properties impersonated a police officer, killed 13 people with the total victim count still outstanding and it has not been labelled as a “terror incident.”
Can someone please explain what the fuck it was then?
Big BIG BIG shoutout to the tiny, homegrown, small business restaurants in Halifax and Dartmouth taking the hit and closing down VOLUNTARILY for our safety. If only the big box stores would be so bold to put people over profits.
I had a long phone call with a non-Ind person yesterday. They googled me, found my place of employment and called me. They began by launching into their idea for a trust for youth and thought I could help them access community and organizations. Don't do this. A thread.
Just putting this out there: challenging the system and status quo is NOT fun. It's really hard and anxiety inducing. Before you think "oh, here she goes again" just considered how uncomfortable it is to speak out and speak up alone.
I logged onto Twitter and was greeted with a notification that said only Twitter Blue subscribers can use two factor authentication. Imagine being so bad at business you make people pay for standard security practices that are free everywhere.
Will never pay.
We are the forgotten Canadian penny,
Our coppery skin removed from circulation over time,
Because it isn’t as valued as the lighter dime.
It’s ten for one.
What a deal.
Just like our land,
We come at a steal.

Remember when the "developed" and "civilized" world tisk tisked West African Nations struggling with Ebola because they couldn't give up their cultural traditions and the virus kept spreading? How goes that Thanksgiving and Xmas planning in *gestures to COVID 2nd wave* all this?
This is my dad. He attended the Shubencadie Residential school in the late 40s and early 50s. His time there has impacted our whole family. But through it all, we were healing. This photo is from a 15 years sober celebration of too much breakfast in 2016.

Has the time come for me, a gainfully employed Native person, to ridicule the racist white people in the truck convoy by saying “must be nice to have all the time in the world to protest with no job!”?
Now that we have more infections than we did in the first wave, is
@loblawco
and
@sobeys
gonna re-implement their "hero pay" or what? Or would you rather keep those record profits for yourselves, by's?
There better not be a single goddamn government paid for firework next week because there is nothing worth celebrating about this fucking country.
#cancelcanadaday
Lastly, we don't need multinational corporation to "give us a voice" and "showcase our culture." We need to stop being paternalistically governed so we have the freedom to speak for ourselves. So sit your ass down and listen to your auntie. End rant.
I see a therapist and I have very good insurance. Even with 80% coverage, I still have an $85 co-pay. Recommending therapy to the uninsured or underinsured isn't helpful. Lobbying to get mental health services covered in our "universal" healthcare is.
Looking at you, Halifax. We got communities across this country cancelling Canada day celebrations to reflect on what this country has done to Indigenous people. Be Bold, Halifax. Be a leader.
I am deeply heartbroken by the provinces that wont make September 30th a holiday. I want to believe in the potential of Canada and I am continuously disappointed.
There was no need for handcuffs, let alone cuffs behind her back. A small Elder holding an eagle feather is not a threat to nearly a half dozen armed police officers. Shame on you
@HfxRegPolice
The huge efforts by search parties, police and the feds to find Gabby Petito and her killer is the appropriate form of action. The grief and outrage from the public is also correct. We would like our women to receive that same reaction. 1/2
International Women’s Day must include trans women, women of colour, Indigenous women, disabled women and all the intersections these include. If not, this day is just corporate window dressing.

And then my students go hungry. The options for grocery stores in Nova Scotians aren't great. It's either gajillionaire Sobeys or gajillionaire Loblaws. It is what it is.
Today I took an old friend to Korean BBQ in Halifax. Me, her and spouse ordered the biggest combo we could get and a giant pot of tea. Halfway through, the server comes over to tell us the man next to us had paid for our meal and left. I was flabbergasted. Thank you, stranger! 🥺
Request, a thread:
Kwe’ Mi’kmaq speakers and other language carriers. As you know, my dad is moving into long term care in a few days. He likely won’t ever make it back to Mi’kma’ki before he crosses over.
My dad was old enough to go to the Shubenacadie Residential School at 5 years old. Your high school and middle school kids are old enough to read about it.
@nseducation
@nsgov
So let me connect the dots: a rally was held yesterday where a bunch of non-Mi’kmaq fisherman, who do not understand Treaty but eat racism for lunch, got themselves riled up and then terrorized a bunch of Indigenous people.
You guys are a fucking joke! 🤡
#alleyesonmikmaki
Really sus that NS power slammed us with a 6.9% rate increase effective immediately on the eve of the coldest night/day in nearly twenty years. Just saying.
However, you are missing several points. The first: we live in a world where we cannot extricate "savage" from the history of colonization. It was the whole premise of things like residential schools, doctrine of discovery, and cowboy and Indian movies.
I was listening to News 95.7 and someone called in to say how he felt bad about the "Aboriginals" but Europeans brought science and math. Oh buddy. What if I told you that it was actually Indigenous people who taught settlers about science?
My dad calls me.
Dad: Happy…uh…no…not Mother’s Day…women’s day! Yeah. That’s it.
Me overwhelmed: 🥺 thank you, dad.
For context for the folks who don’t know, my dad has dementia and doesn’t do “special days” anymore but watches the news so he knew what today was.
Person, if you are reading this. I am upset. I feel violated that this happened at my place of employment. You overstepped. Now I will keep you in my prayers as I smudge, like I promised, but you not get access to me ever again.
Canada has so much work to do to ensure Mary Simon's position pushes beyond tokenism. Canada can't just appoint her and declare success in reconciliation w/o allowing her to dismantle the system that needs a GG in the first place. Otherwise, Canada is setting her up for failure.
So many Canadians all high and mighty about our free healthcare they can’t handle any criticisms about it. Yes. We don’t go into crushing debt but I’m on a 2 year waitlist to see a specialist. We’re starving, being fed crumbs and calling it a meal.
Second point: You reinforce that the "wild" is where all the Indians be. News flash, half, that's right, HALF of Indigenous peoples live in urban areas. Urban areas that are STILL A PART OF INDIGENOUS TERRITORIES.
When I asked my publisher to reach out and ask why they wanted to remove and censor these poems, I got no answer. I'm not going to participate in the erasure of my own peoples history in the Nova Scotia curriculum.

Last night I learned that I will be a recipient of a Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal.
I take this as a symbol for the reaffirmation of our Peace and Friendship Treaties built on reciprocity and mutual respect. I am a descendent of those signatories and so was she.
The folks blocking the NS/NB border are the adult version of the kids who took their ball and went home when they lost thus ruining the game for everyone.
By having a fancy dancer with the words "Sauvage" across the screen, you only further cement that connotation in the brains of consumers who have a tendency to see us as the elves from LOTR and not as complex and diverse communities.
Yesterday, I was awarded the
@ymca
peace medal. I joked that I don’t know why I was getting a medal for peace when I tend to start a lot of fights. But peace doesn’t come gently. It is always in conflict with its right to exist. Wela’lioq. I’ll keep trying.
During this short snippet, you also have Johnny Depp and his tenuous Indigenous ancestry (AT BEST) narrate the "wild and free" BS again. Just because he can catch a tan does not mean he is Indigenous.
What the actual fuck are you gonna do about the
@HfxRegPolice
who pepper sprayed a CHILD,
@MikeSavageHFX
?
@hfxgov
? Do you still feel good about that budget increase? Do you think they used all their empathy training to ensure a kid wouldn’t be harmed?! Showed “restraint”?
If you're an educator and have bought my book and want to teach it in your class, please reach out to me and I'll do my best to zoom into your class or show up in person once we can. What are vacation days for if not burning down the system?
Hey non-Native people! Maybe instead of getting pissed that Native communities allocate portions of their funds to form good social programming to educate their youth so they aren’t crushed by student loan debt, get pissed at your governments that don’t...but I dunno 🤷🏻♀️
Can we clarify that millennials aren't people in their early twenties but rather folks in their mid-thirties who are burnt out can can't afford to buy a house or have children?
If you really cared for us and our voices, maybe you'd spend less time on reinforcing stereotypes and more time helping grow positive and contemporary images of Indigenous people. Read: any music video of
@atribecalledred
.
Third: You picked men's fancy dance as your "super-native-has-the-most-feathers-must-be-hardcore-traditional" showcase. Men's fancy came out of a ban on our traditions from the Indian Act and spread across the continent. You trolled yourself.
I wonder if
@premierbhiggs
has ever spent time on a reserve in NB? James Irving is worth $4.6 Billion meanwhile 6 of Canada's poorest communities are First Nation Reserves in NB. Tax the rich, you insufferable oil slicked potato.
Yes, u had cultural advisors, and yes, real live Ind peoples were involve in this and yes you had the best of intentions, but you missed the point. When we live in a world where redsk*ns is still a team and people do the tomahawk chop, the last thing we need is a shitty perfume.
As we all get real jazzed about the new bubble, a woman in NS died from covid today. So travel away in the bubble if you must but still follow protocols, still wear your mask, still keep gatherings low, and be kind to all the service staff that you will see along your travels.
Nope. Can we not write sympathy pieces for the mass shooter? My dad went to residential school and was treated like shit by society and has committed ZERO mass killings.
Just a solid high five to
@Tim_Bousquet
for his on going coverage of the briefings even when he's feeling down in the dumps. I see you and hope this perks you up just a bit!
A bird shit in my smoothie. I’m waiting for an appointment outside the Halifax public library, reading my book when I hear a thunk and feel a splat. I look at my smoothie and the cover is fully saturated and you know it went in the straw. We’re talk 10/10 sharpshooter aim here.
There was a police riot in the provincial capital yesterday, a child was pepper sprayed and our presumptive Premier,
@TimHoustonNS
, hasn't made a peep.
As a former Poet Laureate of Halifax, I am begging Halifax City Council to not decrease the arts budget. Who did we turn to during the pandemic to get us through? Artists. Music, movies, crafts, TV shows…they got us through.

day is a fucking racket that gives them free advertising so they can continue to charge Canadians the highest rates in the developed world. They don't give a shit about our mental health. They just want the tax receipt for the nickel donations to "charity".
If you sought him out because he "respects" Indigenous peoples, has a connection, blah blah blah, you are very mistaken. See
@NativeApprops
excellent dissection of him here:
You also had a mish-mash of "not too specific" traditions to connect to and represent the "diverse" Indigenous community. If I wanted I grab bag of misappropriated cultural representations of "Indians", I'll just go to Spirit of Halloween this fall.
