Thank you Dartmouth! I have been deeply touched by all the support you've sent my way this campaign. I very much appreciate your confidence. It's been a joy to be your representative and I'm thrilled to have the strong mandate to continue on this new Council! Thank you so much!
Ha! Pointing fingers is the premiers go to. Beats having to explain running a big surplus while refusing to build new public housing, making rent supplements harder to get, expecting people to survive on $380 a month, and closing shelters
This is my 3rd election. My kids are 8 and 5. I had babies at home in 2012 and 2016. No one has ever questioned whether I should be a Councillor because of childcare or parenting. It's ridiculous that this is still a thing women face.
@emilyforkings
Way way back in the 1970s (or there abouts) some supplier to the Dartmouth Parks staff messed up in a delightful way. One, and just one, of the Dartmouth Common cherry trees isn’t ornamental!
Very very happy (relieved really) to be on our way back to Canada this evening from a surreal vacation. Flew out on the 8th and a few days later the world changed. 14 days of self-isolation coming up, but no more stressing over our flight home.
Sawmill River is no longer held back at Sullivan’s Pond. The temporary construction dam is gone. Water looks great cresting over the fish ladders! Eager to see what tomorrow’s downpour brings
Also thanks
@HalifaxWater
for the net. If there are ducklings or even goslings at the Pond this year, it’ll hopefully keep them from getting stuck in the fish ladder.
The increasing number of tents in parks around Halifax, Dartmouth and other parts of Nova Scotia’s largest municipality is part of the “natural evolution” of summertime, Community Services Minister Karla MacFarlance told reporters on Thursday.
Ever thought the Alderney plaza could be so much more than what it is now? So have we.
@DT_Dartmouth
@hfxpublib
and I are partnering with
@DalArchPlan
to look at ideas for activating this underused space. Students will be gathering public feedback at Alderney Thursday & Saturday
Coming up tomorrow at Council, I will ask to revisit the Nuisance Bylaw changes around tobacco. The more I have learned about HRM's approach to designated smoking areas the more I'm convinced our bylaw simply isn't practical and needs a second look.
One of my neighbours. Rides her bike all the time, judging by lawn signs is a progressive voter, has 3 kids and worries about their future. Basically the exact audience that the protesters would want to reach...
There was a not so peaceful exchange between a frustrated cyclist & an angry young protester. Other than that, things have largely been very calm and friendly.

CBC story on how Province is going to cut funding for affordable housing in favour of subsidizing for profit development. Developer interviewed admitted change won't make any real difference in what he charges. This is terrible, uninformed policy
Sometimes it’s the little things. Victoria/Thistle now displays a walk without pressing a button during the school day (8-4). Council has an outstanding motion to look at ped signals more broadly. Still, small victories
Today the campaign is real. My re-election website is live! Highlights from the last four years, priorities for the next four, and how you can help. Check it out. I ask for your support.
Dear provincial parties. This must be the lens that everything is looked through. Any part of your platform that furthers the climate crisis has to go. Any action that moves us forward but not quickly enough needs to be enhanced. We’re running out of time
I fully support Councillor Mason on this. Plans and changes haven’t been explained. Part of the Halifax Common could be lost forever. Surely that deserves public discussion and debate
Our Provincial government stepping on the gas to create more homelessness and even more poverty by making already inadequate rent supplements harder to get.
At the end of January, the Nova Scotia government decided a person would now have to spend at least 50 per cent of their pre-tax income on housing in order to qualify for a rent supplement, up from 30 per cent.
This AM Atlantic Road tried to block the Harbour Trail. Citizens quickly tore down the fence. Police were called and after a standoff between public and workers, cooler heads prevailed. Company has told police they won't fence the trail today. HRM is reviewing its options
I declare the winner of the 2020 municipal election to be.... online voting. Last time, 4,383 people voted online in District 5. At 4,104 votes cast right now in D5 and days still to go, it seems certain we're going to smash that number.
Found 2 incredible front yards on the same street canvassing in Crichton Park. Lawns had bugs so the households converted them into veggie beds. Tomatoes, lettuce, broccoli, carrots and more
If you’re down at Sullivans Pond and notice we’re down to 3 new geese fear not, the 4th one isn’t missing, she’s sitting on a clutch. Please respect her space
@hfxrec
Very pleased that the Province made if official today. HRM and NS are piloting a new approach for providing transit for folks on income assistance. Recipients plus spouses and kids who are on bus routes will get passes. Good cooperation that will make life better for many
Feds and HRM get along. The Province though doesn’t get along with Feds or HRM or CBRM. What’s the common dysfunctional denominator here? Rather self reflection on why he can’t work with anyone, Houston wants to make sure no one can.
Premier Tim Houston says his government needs to be involved when Nova Scotia municipalities want a share of federal funds to build new homes. But Halifax Mayor Mike Savage says adding another level of government to the process will delay new housing sta…
Impressive morning at St Clements on Gaston Road. For the last 15 years six parishes have pooled their Christmas efforts to prepare care backpacks for Margaret’s House and gift bags for others in need. A pile of stuffed backpacks ready to go! Well done
A sign of spring in Dartmouth: The Sullivan's Pond geese have been released.
Eight geese spent the winter months at Hope For Wildlife in Seaforth, NS.

Spotted today on the new Wyse Road bike lane, two kids heading north. No way would they have been on Wyse Road before the protected lanes were put in. No more perfect moment to illustrate why we must build complete streets for everyone. Much still to do but a satisfying moment
“They say they've been told by support workers it can take years to get into public housing.” That’s because NS hasn’t built any in almost 40 years. Same stock but almost 200,000 more people in HRM. Yet
@JohnLohrPC
and
@TimHoustonNS
are, so far, refusing to build
CBC News spoke to three Nova Scotia women who fled abusive relationships and have been staying in shelters for months as they search for housing. They say they can't find anywhere affordable to live, and two are worried they will have no choice but to go…
I know it's beautiful out, but this is a state of emergency, not a spring holiday. No one should be driving to Banook to go for a walk. If it's your neighbourhood, carry on, but if not, stay home. If Banook continues to be a draw and distancing can't be maintained, it will close
New official bird in Dartmouth? The crane. Hard to remember pre-Centre Plan when no one wanted to do anything with Wyse Road. Three cranes in the air there now
Very thankful for all the lawn signs out there. I appreciate all the support. This one is especially meaningful given our shared political history. Thanks so much
@DartmouthKate
Very honoured and humbled to have you in my corner this time around
The Province closed the Christ Church shelter on June 1. It went every bit as badly as feared. HRM handed out tents and sleeping bags to 8 people who are now living in parks in Downtown Dartmouth. If you've noticed a bunch of new tents, this is why
Dropped off a big stack of postcards at City Hall that were filled out by folks in
@DT_Dartmouth
in support of keeping the extended Alderney Ferry hours
This aged well. The company lied and returned this afternoon with concrete blocks. Four on
@BuildNovaScotia
land on Maitland end and 1 on HRM land at Old Ferry Road. Citizens protest stopped them from fully blocking Old Ferry. The rail gate is open so trail is passable right now
This AM Atlantic Road tried to block the Harbour Trail. Citizens quickly tore down the fence. Police were called and after a standoff between public and workers, cooler heads prevailed. Company has told police they won't fence the trail today. HRM is reviewing its options
What's the punishment when money paid into the federal carbon tax goes back to individuals tax free four times a year? We've collectively (Nova Scotians and humanity as a whole) done lots wrong to mess up our environment. Rhetoric like this isn't helpful.
Nova Scotians have done nothing wrong and shouldn’t be punished with a carbon tax.
Our province has a proven record of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Our path to 2030 is more effective and affordable than a carbon tax.
Hey folks. Snow is starting. Just a reminder, HRM's snow standards go out the window when it's 30 cms plus. If we get the upper end of the forecast (50!) it's going to take more time than usual to clean up.
A soft opening for Open City of my sister's bookstore. On Wentworth Street next to the Happy Museum in the space that grew New Scotland Clothing and Bodega
I don't have signage and I don't have staff, but I have books that are just waiting to be read! Come visit tomorrow between 12-5pm to peruse the current inventory, enter a draw for a 3 book prize pack, and share some light refreshments!
This is a huge deal for our Region. $90 million from multiple parties (feds, NS, Port, CN, and HRM) to get trucks out of Downtown Halifax and redesign for Windsor Exchange. Supports Downtown redevelopment, HRM’s transportation plans, and Port’s economic competitiveness.
LONG THREAD: Just got back from a major funding announcement. Halifax received the first two projects funded under the National Trade Corridors Fund. The Feds are putting in $47.5 million
A tree grows at Hawthorn Elementary, a Hawthorn to be exact. Planted on the school grounds in memory of a beloved teacher, Sandra MacKenzie-MacDonald (aka Mrs Mac-Mac). Thanks
@hfxgov
for the assistance in making this happen
It's not just the humidity that's making things feel a bit more tropical out there... Sullivan's Pond has a palm tree. It's a cold-hardy variety that is reportedly capable of surviving down to -23. We'll see if it survives the winter.
Public life isn't easy. Good on you Councillor Lovelace for going to listen, especially when it's a provincial project and not an HRM one. A really odd approach to yell at her. You had her ear! Doesn't seem very productive.
Sometimes leadership competitions are coronations because there is a strong consensus on who the best person is for the job. I believe that's the case here! Nova Scotia is lucky to have
@ChenderClaudia
Congratulations!
Today: An unexpectedly empty day as it was originally set aside for Council budget deliberations, but we're done that now. So I'm helping kids with at home learning, working on constituency stuff, and getting my first Astrazenca shot.
Statement on the assault at Mutual Aid's Starr Park shelter. MA's reckless approach has resulted in serious injuries and criminal charges. Allowing an anonymous group to install shelters that don't meet code with no supporting services must end
No job like it. Crew taking down a dead walnut on Blink Bonnie had to drop tools and retreat after finding a surprise up top: bees! Healthy hive in the dead tree. Tree will now come down in the fall when the bees are asleep. Piece with hive will be relocated. All in a days work!
This is a ridiculous argument. It's basically "we need to let the house burn down so we can collect the insurance money" except when it comes to the Earth, we only have one house to live in. Put. Out. The. Fire.
