Just delivered. Thank you to Yale University Press for the beautiful production! I could not be happier. Absolutely delighted to hold this in my hands. Let’s all raise a glass to Galicia, past and present.
It has been pointed out to me that some of my words in this conversation around min 38, apparently referring to potential genocide in Gaza, were edited out. I checked and that is indeed the case. This is very troubling and will hopefully be corrected.
Important article by Amos Goldberg. Please note that Professor Goldberg has not had a chance to look over the translation. But it is a reliable rendition of the Hebrew original and he has allowed me to post it.
A devastating, highly detailed, and extremely important documentation and analysis of Israel's war of annihilation in Gaza by Lee Mordechai, a historian and an Israeli citizen. Truly a must read.
A Holocaust Scholar Meets with Israeli Reservists
Omer Bartov on his experience speaking with right-wing students who had just returned from military service in Gaza. By Isaac Chotiner
Thank you for posting the full video of the event, including my previously missing statement that "we are on the verge of either genocide, certainly extensive killing of civilians, extensive destruction... and ethnic cleansing. All of these are crimes."
Yesterday at Ben Gurion Univ with students, many back from reserve service in Gaza. There were protests and disturbances, but eventually we sat down and spoke candidly. There is much pain and rage and self-justification but open conversations are essential.
What does a slogan mean? So here is a slick ad by the Israeli real estate firm Yad2 (meaning second hand): "Yad2 helps you look forward and build a future in your new home in Israel! There is Yad2 and we have no other country"
Yesterday, June 27, Alon Confino, my dear friend, brilliant scholar, and true humanist, passed away following a difficult illness. This is a tremendous loss to his family, friends, and the entire scholarly community, as well as to me personally. May his memory be a blessing.
My dear friend Eric D. Weitz passed away. Eric was a distinguished scholar and a true mensch. Over the thirty years we knew each other we established a tradition of always having a cognac together. This time I’ll have to toast you on my own. I will miss you, Eric.

"The possibility of genocide is staring us in the face" in Gaza, Israeli-American professor of Holocaust and genocide studies Omer Bartov tells

, adding: "What we are seeing now may become much worse."
The first copies just arrived. Thank you to Amos Goldberg for the wonderful endorsement and to Bloomsbury for taking on the manuscript and the swift and effective production process. Unfortunately, perhaps, the book is more timely than I’d have wished.
Let me add that I am confident that this was a regrettable technical glitch and not intentional editing. I would like to thank the organizers of this important event for responding quickly and correcting this unfortunate error.
On April 2, 2024, Hebrew University president and provost tried to justify their indefensible suspension of Professor Shalhoub Kevorkian. Here is what they wrote and my response to their ongoing complicity in silencing their faculty members.

Thanks you for posting the glitch-free recording! I will check which statements were missing from the first video. I fully trust that this was a technical error but regret that the recording was not checked before being posted, giving rise to suspicions of intentional editing.
Hard to express how grateful I feel to have just received the advance copy of my first English-language novel, to be published in January 2023. Thank you to publisher Liesbeth Heenk and to all my readers.

This article by me appears in the July 2024 issue, with the headline “Antisemitism: A Guide for the Perplexed.” It is a longer and revised version of the piece published previously online.

My view on the weaponization of the killing and suffering of children in the heinous October 7 Hamas attack and Israel's brutal war in Gaza

In June 2023 I warned in an interview with Haaretz that "Israel suffers from a serious disease of euphoria of power." Then came October 7, fifty years and a day after the same euphoria produced the debacle of 1973. It's time to consider peace.
US can do much more to supply Ukraine with weapons. The pace of supplies is finally accelerating just as the country is being destroyed and delivery routes closing down.

They accused me of accusing them of genocide. They said, We are not murderers. I told them of my research on the crimes of the Wehrmacht and confrontations with veterans in the 1980s. Then we talked. Not an easy conversation.

Jewish pogromists run amok in the West Bank; an international criminal is threatening to unseat an even greater criminal in the Kremlin. And Ukraine, where pogroms once triggered Zionism, is fighting for freedom and justice, led by a Jewish president. How history turns!
