@jamiemchale
I’m totally fine with immigrant citizens voting (heck, I am one)! But if you don’t understand the language of the political debate and only vote along tribal lines, then this clearly deteriorates the quality of liberal democracy.
@jamiemchale
Agree - but you really need to be able to speak the language to participate! Locals may vote along tribal lines, but immigrants unable to speak English can only vote along tribal lines!
It’s a sad state of affairs, when the whole world talks about a photo (which is admittedly a great one) and not the fact that Trump suggested a G7 free trade zone, with no tariffs or non-tariff barriers at all!
Tories in the morning: Let me censor your internet, curb free speech and block you from watching porn.😈
Tories in the evening: Why don’t you young fellows like us? 😥
@NinoPortschy
A mixture of these values does require a bit of effort to realise - unfortunately free societies are not the default option around the world!
@Realdivye
It’s a hypothetical example, as Welsh/Irish all speak English. But let’s entertain the example of Belgium or Switzerland with multiple official languages: then having everything translated makes perfect sense.
Great conversation with the formidable Estonian President

Academy. Few politicians did as much for liberalism & economic prosperity in the world.
It’s great to be a part of the launch of Europe’s newest liberal think tank. We’ve never needed more liberty minded groups on the old continent that further the cause of human dignity and economic prosperity.

NHS doctors, nurses and paramedics with UK work visas due to expire before October 1 will have them automatically extended for a year so they can “focus on fighting coronavirus”, the Home Office said
The moment I started passionately hating certain things in the UK (looking at you NIMBYs & NHS worshippers) was the moment I realised I should apply for citizenship. You can only hate things in a place if you give a damn about its future.

65 years ago, thanks to the young revolutionaries of 1956, Hungary almost freed itself from the suffocating Soviet regime. The revolution didn’t succeed, but the country got rid of its brutal Stalinist oppressors and slowly introduced a more liberal ‘Goulash Communism’ instead.
Nationalism is hell of a drug. Too many lives have been sacrificed for the NHS state religion for everyone to keep looking the other way and avoid reform.
2/2 - Today, our NHS maintains these principles & is the best healthcare system in the world.
This is thanks to our fantastic NHS staff & our national effort to protect it.

Disastrous news from the Philippines- the Court of Appeals has sided with Greenpeace and the antis in blocking vit-A enhanced Golden Rice, which is now in widespread cultivation in the country. All planting must now stop, harming the interests of millions.
To all those shocked by the fact that the UK doesn't recognise Brit expats' double vaccinations, it's the same for me as an Italian. My 2 NHS Pfizer shots are not recognised by Italian authorities.

The rise of oppressive agression by the state needs to be combatted all across the globe. Whether it’s happening in Hong Kong, the US, or Europe, this is completely out of order.

I do hope that the UK will become ‘Singapore by the North Sea’ and outcompete the rest of Europe, so politicians wake and see how much harm their supposedly ‘health and social standards’ related red tape creates.

My salary is not ‘designed’ to meet a particular lifestyle. It’s a result a mutual agreement where both parties feel they benefit from the exchange. If the work gets done, whether from the moon, my bedroom or the office, why should anyone give a damn?
This minister is 100% right. If you want the continued benefit of working from home then don’t expect a salary that was designed for staffers commuting into the office.

My 2021 twitter wish is for Brexiteers to stop sharing ignorant takes on the EU & for europhiles to discontinue expressing dumb opinions on the UK. I know it’s hopeless, but we would all benefit from not having to listen to their ‘insights’ into each other.

Orban was never the president of Hungary and although I wish he would be former PM that’s not yet the case. But I guess a man endorsing murderous dictators cannot be bothered with the details of foreign affairs.
Today

🇭🇺🗳️What to expect from Hungary's April 3 elections?
According to a senior opposition leader, the playing field is so uneven that the six-party opposition coalition United for Hungary (EM) would need a +3-4% win over Fidesz to have simple majority. That's impossible.

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.. Trump is correct; abolishing tariffs & non tariff trade barriers would tremendously benefit both the US & EU.
The European Union is coming to Washington tomorrow to negotiate a deal on Trade. I have an idea for them. Both the U.S. and the E.U. drop all Tariffs, Barriers and Subsidies! That would finally be called Free Market and Fair Trade! Hope they do it, we are ready - but they won’t!

But is it really that complex? Citizenship & voting rights come with higher duties than mere residency. Being able to speak the local language at a bare minimum to understand basic electoral instructions is not a high threshold to meet.

I’ll never receive a single cent of state pension, because the Ponzi scheme will collapse. At least if we continue with the trajectory set by our populist politicians who are unwilling to face the reality and hope the music won’t stop under their tenure.

Without marketising reforms, unsustainable practices remain in place.

Heroes fighting their foes often become like their enemy during the battle. Orbán is no exception - from anti-communist liberal to authoritarian oppressor in three decades. A tragic fall, really.
🇭🇺In a communist-style propaganda speech, PM Orbán today "admitted" that his biggest fear about the 2022 general election is foreign (EU/US) interference. Expect a huge amount of anti-US disinformation in the next 6 months. Orbán's challenger is already portrayed as a US agent.

I wish more businesses had this mentality. Instead of lobbying the government for favours and getting ahead by restricting their competition, businesses should always ask the government to get out of the way and let competition thrive!
Government boast it is opening up visas to the world’s top graduates. But many originally come from third world countries. Why is Britain asset stripping poor countries like this?
