I'm thrilled to announce that I am now represented by the magnificent Amy Collins (

My sci-fi novel featuring a young woman's determination to secure her colony's future against a labyrinth of hyper-political actors will soon be on sub!
A painful update: For the past few months, an editor at a SFF imprint of a Big5 fell in love w/ my novel & sought to acquire it, but ultimately, the publisher passed on the book. I'm upset, because this is the second time an editor wanted the book, but it wasn't meant to be. 🧵
So, I've heard repeatedly that you cannot read in dreams, but I've had many dreams where I do exactly that?
Anyone else? If anyone reads in dreams, it has got to be folks in the

A thought experiment for writers and readers: Would you take the Faustian bargain of ads in ebooks if it meant authors could earn enough to write full-time?

THIS EVENING IS SUCH A WHIPLASH.
I received my first full rejection today (😭), only to get another full request JUST NOW (🤩). AND I was invited to query an agent today I've always wanted to query but couldn't due to location restrictions (🥳).

Fun Facts:
- Your lung can spontaneously collapse w/o trauma!
- You can walk around for a week with it while mostly fine
- You can have the same extremely painful tube procedure 4x because the first 3 attempts failed
- You can learn the hard way fentanyl gives you panic attacks
Ended up hospitalized last night so the thoracic surgeon can snip off the top of my lung, staple it, then “hot glue” it to my chest wall with talc powder tomorrow.
Pretty sure I’ll be okay as long as I get a head pat and a lil’ sticker for being “very brave.”
I don't want to give up on writing, but being in the query trenches this long has felt like driving through a minefield on a kiddie cart with square wheels.
Apologies for the moody, meandering nature of this thread. I feel like an amnesiac, freshly awoken, squinting up the gibberish of AI-generated road signs, for I simply do not know what to do next...

I'm staring at this scifi novel, knowing it's a solid story (I was told 5 other editors at the imprint also read and loved it) but also that it's about to have a Viking's funeral in my kitchen sink.
After five nights in the hospital, I am finally DISCHARGED!
My lung is still only at ~33% of its capacity, but with further spirometer use, it should return to normal.
Now to go take a big ol’ nap in my own bed…
do I write the sequel, despite my not knowing what to do with the first book? Or return to the New Weird Appalachian thriller I was writing prior to this? Or revise the comedic/epic romantasy I wrote years ago?
@sewistwrites
I unfortunately fell prey to their sister site, Emery Rose, and am still angry at myself for having bought from them. (At the time I wasn't aware of Shein or the controversy around them, either).
Because there was interest in making the book into a trilogy, I've spent the last two months outlining a sequel that I'm beyond excited to write and believe is a perfect continuation of the story. Now, I'm unsure what to do —

Update: Still leaking air, so they're giving me one more week with this sexy tube to see if I heal up. If my lung continues being a little brat, then I'm off to the OR, where the surgeon literally scratches up my lung lining to inflame it and teach it to stop throwing hissy fits.
A pest control guy once came to my door to tell me he was spraying my neighbor's yard & asked if I wanted in on it. I went full-blown DRUID on him and said all the victims of his poison campaign were welcomed to shelter in my backyard.
First time I've seen a speechless salesman.

There's an app I love called "Too Good to Go" that tries to fight food waste by letting restaurants/bakeries sell what they would have otherwise tossed for cheap.
A good friend just sent me this super kind feedback, and I am TEARING UP. 🥹🥹🥹
"Not done yet, but this book really is a triumph. A gorgeous parable. I feel like you've managed to write a contemporary brave new world or 1984..."
I freaking *inhaled*

's ANTIMATTER BLUES in, like, half a day. It's such an enjoyable fast read, and it scratched my huge itch lately for first contact scifi. Wonderfully paced, lovable characters, fun twists, and many delightful moments of hilarity. 5🌟
@SBLitAgent
I think what writers are reacting negatively to here is that we WANT writing to be our career, but often we end up feeling like everyone who is our "gatekeeper" to that goal gets to have a "career in books" by using our work to make that possible.
Just finished reading Mickey7 last night, and THOROUGHLY ENJOYED every page of it. Excellently paced and loved every aspect of the layered worldbuilding. Mickey7 himself ended up being highly relatable, and I kept thinking of actual people he reminds me of.
Big recommend.
Over the weekend, I spent almost 12 hours straight getting together with various friends and chatting one on one. I nearly lost my voice.
Is there some sort of medal they hand out to introverts who've accomplished this feat of strength?

For four months, my neighbor's DIY project was concreting over his entire backyard, which meant 4-5 hours daily of non-stop squealing and rumbling from his concrete mixer.
He then sold the house.
Now, the new neighbors are jack hammering out all that concrete.
To distract me from my anxious waiting, my mom gifted me a 1,000 piece puzzle, where half of it (and most of the border) is pure black, and now I'm wondering how many responsibilities, meals, and decades-long friendships I can ignore in my quest to defeat this whale of a jigsaw.
Entire thread is full of gold, but I wanted to highlight this one particular point. The best aspect for querying authors of being part of X's
#WritingCommunity
is the HUGE opportunity here to network and make connections. I can personally vouch for why you should NOT be timid! 📢
3. Lastly, I wish I hadn’t been afraid to interact with agents and other pub professionals on here. While querying, I felt like there was an ocean between them and me. I felt so small and like I couldn’t build industry relationships, just because I was a querying author. 9/?

@HFLane_writing
There's an inherent bias in the numbers: too few agents and too many writers.
IMO, the answer to this is not hand wringing but technology. Query Manager seems to be improving the querying process for both agents & writers.
The timeline transparency helps IMMENSELY.
(For clarity, I would not take this bargain, as I think anything that brings misery to the reading experience is ultimately harmful to authors, but a few people embraced this in the other post, so I thought it worth a ponder.)
@SandraProudman
True, but needs a tweak: *will bring you nothing but heartbreak UNLESS you learn to cultivate resilience.
For most people, resilience is a skill that has to be learned and built up. And it's okay to acknowledge that it's not often a fun process.
Someone please help me solve this mystery:
Between 10:30-10:45pm at NIGHT, my neighbors were out with a flashlight and a sledgehammer. They were whacking something along the fence (but not the fence itself). Dull thuds, no cracking noises. What on earth were they doing?
Because someone ticked me off, I'm going to try and write this book in under six months. I'm a slow writer, but I am organized and persistent.

Anyone else flip back and forth between the physical and audiobook copies of a book while they're reading through it?
It feels like finding a cheat code.

*I* was the bad date:
We were poor college kids at the time, and we ate at Bakers, went on a walk, and were having a pleasant time together. There was a lull, and I suggested we invite our mutual friend to join.
He stared at me and said, "This is a date."
I had NO idea it was.
Mystery solved: They ripped out the concrete planter so they could fit a massive RV into their backyard. Now the mountains I used to look out at while writing/working are blocked by this hideous beast.
My friend did suggest adding these googly eyes, though, which is NOT helping:

@ceciliaclyra
Helpful: Subgenres, tropes, TV/film comps, list of what you don't want, specific topics you want to see explored or feelings elicited, challenging vs. easy reading
Not helpful: Overly specific MSWL, relying solely on a list of very recently published books, overly vague/open
Anyone else deal with the type of insomnia where you keep waking progressively earlier and earlier? For a week now, I've been waking at 4:30am and cannot get back to sleep. I need tips on how to make this stop. 😭
An NPC gave my D&D players a heavily reinforced wagon that they must escort though a Mad Max-esque landscape with strict instructions to 1) never open the wagon; 2) destroy it if it falls into anyone else's hands.
I'm their DM. I have NO IDEA what's in the wagon.
Y'ALL, I JUST PAID $0.80 TOTAL FOR ALL THESE.
I managed to stumble into our local library's end of the year sale, and I seriously cannot believe what a steal this haul ended up being.

Malachite plays a major symbolic role in my novel, and a friend/beta reader gifted me this GORGEOUS pendant in honor of some good news. She's also rocking her own matching pair of malachite earrings, and I'm freaking hyped that my friends are hyped about this book's future.❤️🔥

@budman_mark
Is the issue that the term "prologue" is no longer in vogue or is it opening the book before the story's actual start / with someone other than the MC?
This hurts as bad as you’d expect. I maxed out all pain meds they gave me.
They also found necrotic tissue on my lung instead of a bleb, but it will take a week for pathology to determine what it was.
Surgery otherwise successful.

Sorry, I've been inattentive to X lately, because our asshole neighbors moved out and abandoned one of the SWEETEST cats on earth.
We've been working on integrating Nyx into our home, despite having three other cats already. She loves to chirp, meow, and "sing."
just found out that the cat we rescued months ago year is in kidney failure (prognosis currently poor); she'll be hospitalized tomorrow
and my own x-rays show a new pneumothorax

FYI, an easy way to always mitigate this is to add a space after the word you're replacing. (You may have to do a second run through if the word is a plural or has possessives.)

It's a great painting, but is it appropriate for a royal portrait? My first thought seeing this was, "does the painter think King Charles is a war criminal?"

So much this. Sometimes a writer manages to luck out with a book that's perfectly timed with the current hot trend. Folks need to remember: Just because someone got extremely lucky with an opportunity doesn't mean you, your book, your talents are diminish in any way.

Finished this last night, and whoa, the WORLD BUILDING. Never thought I'd want to spend THIS much time on the edge of Hell. The heart-wrenching characters, the creepy god-tech, the visceral feel-it-in-your-teeth prose—all of it comes together magnificently in THE HAND OF GOD. 5🌟

Red flag. Their job is to sell the rights of your book to a company whose job it is then to sell your book to the market. Otherwise, you're doing the work of an independent author but not getting paid for it.
