A lot of creators are creating $1m+/year in revenue, but few are building valuable businesses that create long-term value. Here's why: Most expert creators have products, not businesses. And that's totally fine. I'll share my thinking on the differences so you can make a conscious choice. As an example, let's look at expert creators who have (1) expertise and (2) distribution (an audience they can leverage). People such as @AliAbdaal, @thejustinwelsh, @davegerhardt, @Codie_Sanchez Products are mostly dependent on the creator, with (1) revenue / marketing being the creator (80%+), (2) the product / education being driven by the creator and (3) sometimes the delivery / operations, too. Whereas businesses are (1) driving 25% or less revenue from 1 channel (creator or else), (2) the product / education is driven by multiple experts, (3) the delivery and operations involve full-time, standalone, teams that can work without the involvement of 1 person. Products allow you to move quickly and create cashflows, being obviously highly profitable. In contrast, businesses allow you to create time freedom and build enterprise value (mainly for the purpose of a potential exit). Creator-led businesses have tremendous advantages, but those exact advantages are the same reasons most are worth very little or nothing without the creator involved, which creates a lot of pressure for creators to be actively involved all the time and limits their time freedom. Fundamentally, if you want to build a valuable company that can be sold, the best way to do so is to think as a buyer and ask yourself what you'd like to see to consider a business less risky than it is today. This transition has been partially or fully done by multiple household names you'd know of like @DaveRamsey (@RamseySolutions), Tony Robbins (Robbins Research International), Marisa Peer (Rapid Transformational Therapy Ⓡ) Each has its own tradeoffs so if you're an expert building, choose wisely! Would love any thoughts on this from anyone who's thinking on these topics.
