There's a powerful Jewish presence among pro-Palestinian protestors on campuses, yet mainstream media keeps erasing their voices and presence. Power to these students for imagining a world of co-existence through solidarity, love, and care, showing its seeds in their praxis.
Batman, a Kurdish city, has been marked by the highest women's suicide rate in Turkey for years. However, now Gulistan Sonuk, a Kurdish woman, has won the municipal elections with the highest vote rate in Turkey. Jin, Jiyan, Azadi! 🔥

Metin Cihan summarizes Turkey-Israel trade:
- We send Israel the fuel we buy from Azerbaijan.
- We send 65% of Israel's steel. We send 95% of its cement.
- A Turkish company produces 7% of Israel's electricity.
- Barbed wire also comes from Turkey.

As soon as you add a non-Western place name in your book/article title, how quickly it gets perceived as an area studies paper and stops being a theoretical contribution. It is frustrating and exhausting especially when it happens in critical studies circles.
A body of religious orthodoxy who claims to be the “leaders” of Islam in N.America monopolizes and orientalizes Islam. They are swamped with their denial of and disgust for trans/queer lives. Well, I have bad news for you: queer/trans Muslims exist and we will continue to exist!

Life has been intense and challenging lately. I just want to take a short break from this intensity to share some good news with you in these bleak times.
I voted in New York with rage and frustration. I cannot smile while being forced to suck up all that anti-Kurdish, anti-refugee discourse unleashed especially this past week. Yet the other option is an imperialist, misogynist, anti-LGBTI, anti-Kurd fascist and treating refugees
I received the most touching email from a scholar I don't know and it teared me up:
"I wanted to get in touch to say how much I love your book Violent Intimacies. I’m a newly-tenured trans academic in the UK who is slowly coming out at work.+
Last week today was your funeral mom. You spent your last year of illness calling your mom, wanting to go to her. Now you are in your eternal rest next to grandma. So difficult to make sense of your nonexistence. I miss you dearly. Rest in peace and power mom.
Today is the anniversary of the Armenian genocide, which has not ended but still continues in the material and symbolic privileges created for Turks, in the assimilation and denial politics of the Turkish state. I commemorate with respect and shame all the massacred Armenians.
I do not accept the MESA meeting to be business as usual this year. I do not want to present any academic paper. All I have been thinking for weeks now is the ongoing genocide in Palestine. I feel so useless.
I will have a book talk in Istanbul on June 8th. This will be a special event, as Violent Intimacies returns to its home. The talk will be in Turkish.

This is just a snip of the feminist earthquake aid work on the ground in Istanbul. We are organizing the Purple Truck campaign to meet the specific needs of women, LGBTI+s and children impacted by the earthquake. Everyone’s care, love and dedication is just beyond words 💜✊🏽
Bloody explosion in Taksim, Istanbul. I am fine. We don't know the details yet, as they have implemented an immediate censurship on the news. My bro was only five-min walk away from the explosion point. Thankfully he is safe and sound. Fuck this shit!
Why do we need feminist responses to disasters? Here is my two cents on our collective work as the Feminist Solidarity Group for Disaster in the earthquake zone in Turkey and Kurdistan
I just finished reading this wonderful book. Each chapter is a piece of heart embedded in Kurdish women's freedom struggle and political imagination. Üstündağ (

Their war on pro-Palestinian students, academic freedom and democratic campus life keeps expanding and intensifying. So does the anti-colonial student movement! My heart is with the Columbia students who are making history today! ✊🏽 Shame on you, Minouche Shafik!

This is heartbreaking... And there are many other dead refugees and migrants whose loved ones could not even travel to Turkey to claim their dead bodies and organize a proper funeral for them. It is hell on so many levels for a devastating number of people.

The only reason I am attending MESA is to be in the company of those friends who share similar feelings and political worldviews that call the ongoing violence as genocide and the political project as settler colonialism. It is exhausting to be with people thinking otherwise.

Today marks the 108th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, one of the foundational violences of the Turkish Republic. "Anniversary" is in fact an incorrect expression, as the genocide has been continuous in many forms since April 24, 1915.
For the first time during this year's sabbatical I feel sorry that I am in Turkey and not in New Jersey -- Lots of love to my fellow union members and beautiful students who keep showing up to stand in solidarity with their professors and teaching assistants ✊🏽
Ali Rıza Aslan, a Kurdish father receiving his dead son's recently found bones from the state security forces in a sack. The son Hakan Aslan died in Diyarbakır during the state terror in 2015.
This is the history of Turkish colonialism in Kurdistan weighing on his arms.
“One child every 15 minutes”
No matter how many different scripts of “human” “civilian” “children” we mobilize, Israel/US/Europe will not see Palestinians as civilians, as humans, as children. These categories are colonized and deployed for colonial genocide of Palestinians.
GAZA UPDATE: More than 1,030 Palestinian children in Gaza have been killed by Israeli forces since October 7, or about one child every 15 minutes, and more than one-third of the total death toll.

The afterlife of an alleged "democratic" municipal election in Wan, a Kurdish city under colonial rule. AKP confiscated the elected mayorship. Kurdish people are taking to the streets, demanding democracy and justice. Enough is enough to punish Kurds for being Kurds!
Antep and Maraş in Turkey were hit by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake at 3:20am. A lot of people are under the rubble. We felt it here in Beirut with a magnitude of 4.4 and it was horrible. I cannot imagine the situation in Antep and Maraş…
Meanwhile in Turkey, another colonial state seizes mayor positions and imprisons Kurdish politicians elected by Kurdish people in Kurdish towns in Turkey.
Today as many as 200 civil society groups in Turkey organized their second meeting under the banner of “the Great Family Gathering” in Istanbul, to stand against, as they noted, “the increasing LGBTI+ propaganda and imposition in Turkey. +
This is huge!! We have been politically/academically working against the Sunni family/state denial of transgender funerals, burials and mourning rituals in Turkey for longer than a decade now and this is a remarkable step! Long live the solidarity of the oppressed! ✊🏽🏳️⚧️🏳️🌈
