Ireland, I’m sorry, I feel you need a sharp Eurovision intervention here. All this talk of politics, and “they never give Ireland a chance”, and “we should just pull out”, and “it’s not a singing contest any more”. I’ve heard all that chat before, you’re sounding very British.

I think the best comparison I have between last year and this year for the UK is that Sam Ryder felt he was singing down the lens to you. Due to the camera angles, it felt like you were in Row Z at a gig for Mae Muller’s performance.

The reaction to the UK's result at Eurovision - certainly, what I've seen - appears to be a bit more grown-up. Accepting that we really didn't match the likes of Sweden and Finland and enjoying the show really, which is nice. The politics argument evaporated after we came second.

Actually a very grown-up analysis of what may have gone wrong for the UK. The one thing I’d add is trying to host the whole show and still sort out your own song can be somewhat disruptive, which may be why host entries struggle.

Another initial thought: Liverpool has thrown itself at Eurovision in a way I don’t believe believe any of the other bidders would have. It’s not an ironic thing, or a “we’ll put on a good event for you” thing, it’s a “we want this and we’ll prove ourselves” thing.

Eurovision: it ain’t anti-British bias. We send the wrong song with the wrong staging and no interest from the UK public every single year. If we were as bad at the Olympics as this there would be demands for an inquiry, we wouldn’t be going “those boxing judges hate the Brits”.

I fear the biggest problem with the UK’s Eurovision entry this year has been expectation management. Loads of excitement and no info led to everyone getting excited and filling in the gaps. That isn’t normally a problem but the anticipation because of last year changed it.

Expectation management on Eurovision tickets: - The arena is quite small and a ton of seats will probably be lost because of the need to get TV cameras etc in. - Half the world is going to try to get these tickets. I’m not saying you won’t get them, just … bear that in mind.
