I agree with you, but it's been pushed three times! Problem is Lord & Miller relied on a budget that allowed them endless iterations. The artists say they didn't have a clear view of the final product so they kept deleting finished shots on and on.

Adobe should freeze After Effects development, make it bug free, label it 'Classic'. Then start working on a modern compositor, with a real 3d workflow, nodes, UI made for hdpi screens and tablets, a particle system, IK/FK, OSL, IA...

you're pointing at something important here. 3d animation is like a chain, there are many steps between storyboard and compositing. Doing changes on a shot that's finalized means going back to phase one of 12.
Mentally exhausting, and a planning nightmare.

The state of sci-fi design is very poor I think. There's no more taking risk, no more panache and flamboyance in design. It's all pretty neat, but overall flattened so every movie will look like the other.
As I feared, a static, empty & clinical look just like Blade Runner 2049. This could be from a shot from Star Wars. I would have preferred rich layered action & organic compositions with a real sense of depth.
