When I was querying, most of the rejections I got from agents was either “I can see the bones of great worldbuilding here, but I fear it’s not quite there yet,” or “the pacing feels off.” All of which I knew, but didn’t fix because I was scared of an overinflated word count. 🧵
In case it's helpful, here's the word count guidelines I've recently added to one of my form rejections.
Middle-grade (contemporary): 30k-60k
Middle-grade (SFF): 50k-70k
YA (contemporary): 50k-80k
YA (SFF): 70k-100k
Adult fiction: 70k-120k
Adult SFF: 100k-150k

I was scared to go over a 100k while querying because a lot of agents reject/are hesitant to request (I queried at 96k YA SFF, but my book is now adult). Once I signed with my agent, the first thing she told me was I had the bones of the story but I needed to flesh it out (2/6)

That was exactly my experience where I was cutting scenes short or not giving enough backstory into characters because I was afraid it was a waste of words. But that is what makes a story real and characters pop!! Finding the balance is so important
