This is an awesome story that needs more views. Homelessness in New Orleans reduced by 90 percent. They have housed every homeless veteran. #soljourno

Some personal news: Today's my last day with @NPR . I'll be launching my new book #TheStolenYear, & working on storytelling and advocacy around the #ClimateCrisis. But first, a thread of my fave @npr_ed stories from the last 8(!) years 1/.

@JoyAnnReid this is a clever comedy account--not the actual flight attendant. I got fooled too and I think this guy is hilarious!

This is the new traditional student.
I cried in a Panda Express today: a thread. This is a long and uncomfortable story, but I feel like sharing it, so I will. I'm transferring from a community college to Sacramento State this fall with an AA-T in Journalism. I went to the campus today to meet with a counselor. 1/.

I'm struggling to understand why a school leader would put out this exclusionary message in any context. We know that many of the kids who have trouble tolerating/complying with masks have special needs and also have trouble benefiting from online school.
Mask mandates are back for @SDSchools students. For students who feel uncomfortable wearing a mask, SDUSD President Sharon Whitehurst-Payne suggests not returning to school at all. Full Interview:

Airlines got $25B to get by while running fewer flights. Schools got $13.5B to do MORE work (virtual + hybrid programs). It's been estimated they need $200B.
Seriously y'all. I am so tired of the debate over school reopening disregarding this very basic fact: reopening school in a pandemic is REALLY EXPENSIVE.

In addition to what @DLeonhardt names here, the pandemic harmed children by harming mothers, driving them out of the workforce and assaulting their mental health; + children with disabilities & children involved with the courts/family welfare.

Talked to an early childhood education brilliant mind this week who told me Sweden's model for #ECE is "a focus on being, not on becoming." And that just seems like such a beautiful, mindful, sentiment to close out the work week.

It means DOJ and ED are no longer taking the position that transgender people are covered by Title IX. (1)
@anya1anya @ACLU What does this letter from DeVos exactly mean vs. Title IX?.

20,000 daycare providers shuttered during the pandemic. There has been one story about them for every ~ 500 restaurant/bar stories.
"The child care industry and child care workforce has been crying out for these dollars for almost a year now,” @ramskull. The American Rescue Plan #childcare $39 billion is, "a really important first step for us to save many of these programs.”

Review of evidence: "The vast majority of kids with #COVID19 will recover completely.".
1/ Our systematic review on long covid in children is now published, thanks to all the hard work by @livvyswann and her team. It’s not easy to study a condition with no case definition or diagnostic investigation, but here is what we found … 🧵. 👉

This is really something. Policies in Germany prioritized children much more than did those in the US. Schools were closed for fewer weeks overall and other establishments--eg bars, brothels--were closed preferentially to schools, which didn't happen here.
Editor of Germany’s largest newspaper, BILD, apologizes to the nation's children re Covid: "Millions of children in this country, for whom we are all responsible as a society. We ask your forgiveness for a year and a half of politics, who sacrificed you.”

One of the people who harvests the food on our Thanksgiving table, and her daughter. 😍.
Mayita shared this photo taken in the sweet potato fields of California. Her youngest daughter wanted a picture in the fields to show she was proud of her mom being a farm worker and proud of how hard she worked to invest in her children’s opportunities.

As a reporter, I have always been a wonk, wonk-adjacent, or at least wonk-curious. I just want to get the knowledge hot from the cooks in the knowledge kitchen. And I have been privileged to learn from SO MANY amazing scholars at various points. 1/.

UNESCO rep told me their position is now that schools should be open if supermarkets are open.
I don’t know any other way to say this — and I understand I’ll be pilloried in some quarters, and I’m just gonna hope my progressive caring-about-kids bona fides mean something — we cannot, cannot, cannot return to mass virtual learning.

The United States's handling of the COVID pandemic acutely harmed children, in ways that exposed historical fault lines, and with complex, far-reaching consequences that could include the drafting of a new social contract.

@aminatou I have friends who switch mom's and dad's numbers on the forms because that's the only way to get the school/ballet class/whatever to actually call the dad, who is the actual primary parent.

Some kids in this country have no homes, or their homes are not safe or not heated. They didn't have food or computers when schools closed. They are "our kids" too.
@anya1anya @NPRinskeep @nytimes @nytimeswell I would like just to point a little thing our kids will be ok. They learned from safety of home , have food , computer, heat and piece. Before we create victims out of theme , think about kids in Ukraine,Ethiopia, Somalia and many other countries where kids are killed during war.
