has on their lives and their futures.
Advocacy, research, and
#GunViolenceAwareness
can bring change. We can do better. Prevention is possible. 🟧
Firearm assaults are highly concentrated in socially vulnerable communities.
We analyzed >71,000 shootings in 5 US cities to demonstrate how this information can guide prevention.

The top resident paper award was a 🤯 honor on top of an awesome conference!!
This study started when I was a PGY2, frustrated with the rate of firearm injuries in our community that didn’t quell with COVID. It progressed over several years to an idea for a public health approach to prevention. It’s sparked more work since, and we are so excited to share!

Geospatial disparities in firearm violence are associated with the Social Vulnerability Index. SVI can assign firearm violence risk and assist in creating meaningful, targeted prevention programs.

Today my mom asked my sister (also a surgery resident) and I if “that ABSCESS Exam” is coming up...
Fairly accurate mistake for a non-doctor that I think necessitates an ABSITE re-brand 😂

The answer is yes. Such sage advice from a trauma surgeon so many of us look up to!!
Was a privilege to present our work using the SVI to characterize breast cancer outcomes at

we want you to be YOU!
If a program makes you feel uncomfortable for who you are, then it’s not the place you should be.
Plus, you can’t be your best self/physician if not supported by those around you to the core.
#whyuchicagosurgery
I get asked a lot by med students whether being out and proud can affect their residency matching prospects
Truest truth I know is that it’s ok to not match at a place that uses that against you. Their loss, your gain.
A good program for you is a program that will welcome it
I’m honored to have a leader in injury prevention and a fellow Chicagoan discussing our paper! 🤩

As a former gymnast & pole vaulter, I would say ‘yips’ = a psychologic mental block resulting in fear, which affects the physical ability to perform a skill well. Esp. prominent in sports that can cause serious injury. It’s a head game, less so than a true physical inability…
I cannot emphasize how important this development is. Black women are more likely to present at younger ages, with more aggressive disease, & at later stage. Now we have a chance to catch these deadly cancers before it's too late

Super curious when

will let someone they recruited just start early and develop. Hard to imagine every QB waiting in line won’t transfer if they don’t give the young guys a shot (ie Buchner, Angeli, Carr. Can’t let it happen to Carr!)
We can’t wait to make this publicly available for use, but please reach out in the mean time if you’re interested in obtaining risk data for census tracts in your city, state, or region…we are happy to share, eager to validate externally, and learn how it will be used!
@olsonplanner
For me, invaluable! Got a MS in Global Health and then worked at a non-profit. Helped solidfy career goals, get into med school, & set me up well for research…but delayed other aspects of life. So, I think depends on one’s personal goals and readiness for a medical career.
