So much of what I see in film criticism is meanness for the sake of likes and clicks and so often it even goes far beyond being mean or unkind.
People seem unable or unwilling to realize that behind any movie is hundreds if not thousands of human beings.

Valid criticism is wonderful and necessary. Constitutive feedback makes our industry strive to do better, but that's not what I'm seeing most of the time anymore.
Film criticism, if we can even call it that anymore, has morphed into a socially acceptable form of cyber bullying..

I saw a TikTok the other day from Ahmed Best, the actor who played Jar Jar Binks. He described with great vulnerability the sheer amount of hatred that brought him to the brink of killing himself and his story brought me to tears.

I've never seen a dinosaur, and have a great respect for the boundaries of science, so Jurassic Park didn't work for me. Which is to say, it's a film that makes zero outreach to its audience. Viewers who love dinosaurs will adore it. Everyone else will find it less than useless.

Those kind of reviews are helpfy and not what I take issue with.
But if you're "hot take" on a movie is to tell the film crew to learn how to use razor blades, you're not a film critic. You're just an angry, spiteful person and I hope you step barefoot on a pile of Legos.

I worked on QFF when it was only a feature film and scored the entire series (all of which was removed from the final production). I heard from Sam in real time as these things happened to him. I stand firmly beside my friend and collaborator.

I was an associate producer on Queer For Fear, before my name was taken off the credits, for several months in 2021. And I was present for or told in real time about what is alleged against Bryan Fuller in this lawsuit. I stand with Sam telling the truth.

And another that said we would be denied access to heaven.
I’m not very religious so that second one doesn’t bother me but the sentiment behind it does.

It’s easy to say “just ignore it” but this level of engagement in a movie we’ve worked on might only come once in a career and if we’re lucky to ever receive it again, it may not come again for another decade. I love seeking out the people who enjoy our film and meeting our fans.

Blood and Honey is obviously not at the level of a Star Wars movie. I can literally only imagine the onslaught of hatred that pours at someone involved in a franchise so huge, but it really got me thinking about who we are as a society and how nasty our film discourse has become.

Stop calling West Side Story (2021) a remake. It is a stage musical that had a film adaptation in the 60’s. This is a new film adaptation.
The Little Women films were all new adaptations of that novel, not remakes of each other. This is the same.

Batman Returns is the undefeated best Batman movie. NO OTHER Batman movie captures what I've always loved about Batman quite as well: that Batman is more about his villains than himself. He's only the lense through which we see their choices, having faced a similar choice himself
