Having coached 18+ age group for the last 5 yrs I sometimes forget the crazy drops swimmers make at age group meets. At his first county champs today, Austyn has gone from a 1:21 entry time in the 100m Bk, to a 1:16 heats swim to a 1:11 in the final just 90 mins later!

What a crazy 24 hours that has been! Having been involved in competitive swimming for over three quarters of my life as both an athlete and coach I can now proudly say I have coached an Olympic champion, the pinnacle of our sport……..and in a new Olympic and European Record too!

Preparing for distance events (400m and up) means at times we are completing the non-glamorous but vitally important long aerobic sessions but always at an “easy” intensity. This morning saw average HR’s from the mens group of 113-135 (maximum HR’s are in the range 185-208)

Today Austyn raced in his first open meet. In July when we entered, he was v nervous to swim in a 50m pool so we made a deal that if he raced, I would too! It’s been 17 years since I stopped senior swimming and over 10 years since my last Masters race so a 58.3 100 Frs wasn’t bad

Long rep swimming tonight at low intensities. Lactates ranged from 1.0-2.1 mmol across the group with swim speeds ranging from 1:06 to 1:16 per 100m. Athletes engage very well on sets like this, everybody can swim at their own “easy” pace and we still keep together as a group.
