Still stunned to find my flash on the
@SmokeLong
finalist list. I’ve spent the morning reading the other stories, amazed & touched by each & their authors. From names I know to a first time publication, it’s a special place for my words to land. ♥️
It’s hard being reminded why I often write what I do. My mother’s bday gifts to me arrived today: framed photo w/a HS prom date, 1/2-used body lotion I gave her, Burger King coupons, a pain pamphlet for Medicare recipients, snarled necklace I left behind.
@clhubes
Basements. I grew up in KS with tornadoes, soft soil, sitting next to mason jars & potatoes. Our TN realtor was confused when basement was a top request. I got one. Rocky ground & radon make it hard apparently. People sit in their bathtubs & neighbors come to our basement.
I got a royalty payment today! 3 months after Child Craft launched, enough books have sold to pass the advance $.🩷Thanks to journals that published pieces, my fantastic editor & publisher, indie bookstores & everyone who has bought my pink labor of love.
@ElyKreimendahl
Only if he has to keep his shoes and sweater on and not empty his pockets. :) Plus you get to play move the metal bar thing until you chose a suitable judgmental weight that he’s not allowed to argue with.

The man on a Zoom meeting who ended up with a cat filter on and said "I am not a cat" very seriously like anyone in the meeting thought he was, while still having a cat filter on his face.
@writesloud
Why couldn’t it just be a closet pre-filled with books, glue sticks, pencils and crayons? Things teachers actually/should need. That’s like the equivalent of a dalek in the classroom corner.
After a slew of rejections, that’s an email header I like seeing! Thank you to
@xraylitmag
for accepting my micro for July publication. Which is basically tomorrow in pandemic time. :)
I had to have my husband sign off on getting my tubes tied. In case HE wanted me to have more kids. There were 2 lines on the pre-op form - one for each of us.
I was 35. I had hyperemesis gravidarum throughout both pregnancies. An emergency c-section. Failed the glucose tests.
Celebrating being on the shortlist with a Day 7 bit of Trader Joe's chocolate. Congrats to my fellow shortlisters! I recognize titles on the long and shortlists - so many wonderful flashes and writers. 😍
The shortlist for The SmokeLong Quarterly Award for Flash Fiction 2022. These 25 stories were selected from 1476 entries by a team of 17 staff. The biggest of congratulations to everyone on this list. You are all stars. Finalists announced next Wednesday.
😊When a book finds the right home, it feels right & word west is that place. Thank you to everyone who's been part of this collection - journals, blurbers, editors, beta & last minute readers, sharers & readers! Hope to see you at AWP - I'll have pastel Sharpies & tea. ☕️🎂
happy book birthday to the amazing

Congratulations to all twenty writers on the list and commiserations to anyone who just missed out.
Emails will be going out shortly.
I have few words left to describe how giddy this reveal makes me. Just many words inside the gorgeous cover🐠The care & creativity

During the pandemic, our not-needy school district gave out the federal free bags of cafeteria food for at-home kids, same as in-school kids. 60+ moms decided to sign up, sort the unpackaged food & make a show of “giving it away.” District sent out a message to knock it off.
24 years today.
Cake by Publix. Flowers by Sam’s Club. Thrifted shoes. Dress from my mom’s pattern. BBQ reception. Less than 50 people on pews & in the basement reception where Marvin Gaye *accidentally* played after the Lion King.
House down payment made.
And a bagpiper.💕
What awesome news to get - as I turned my cell service back on after landing in Denver! Thank you to

So honored to be longlisted! Thanks to the Wigleaf team &
@complete_sent
. I might be even more thrilled to see stories from journals I work with: Gone Lawn, Fractured & CRAFT. By nature, it's a small list from all the wonderful things published - congrats & hugs to writers today.

Why do women’s shorts come in only these styles: butt checks out, attacked by wolves, farmhand, in training for the Tour de France or starring in 1950s beach party movie?
My OB said no more kids. I was cut open for major surgery (2nd section) anyway.
The irony is my husband could go on his lunch hour to get a vasectomy. W/out my permission. W/out telling me. No second line.
Today makes me angry. It shouldn't be this way. Ever. Not in 2021.
Excited to have a short story accepted at
@lumierereview
& with such kind words. Note the "short story" description -- 1,357 words. Gasp! What has 2020 done to me? When I wrote it, it almost hurt to go over my defined 1K word "flash" threshold but it needed to be longer. :)
In the middle of Flash Flood subs, I love seeing my
@nationalflashfd
anthology &
@EmergeJournal
chapbook flash included! Thank you to each press &
@BestSmFictions
! This flash taught me why not to write in 1st POV & read. 🤣 What a list to be part of! …
A big thank you to Susurrus for publishing and nominating my flash! The nomination is extra special because I also see my Belle Point press mate
@williamwoolfitt
on the list too. 🩷
I recently drove up Pike's Peak with my youngest kid. It was harrowing, spectacular & monumental. Today is Child Craft's summit & all those things too. A mountain-sized thanks to all the editors (esp Casie!), journals & the writing community for supporting my little pink book. 🩷
It's pub day! 🥳 Congratulations to Amy Cipolla Barnes (
@amygcb
), whose latest prose collection CHILD CRAFT officially enters the world today. Get your copy now through our website, Bookshop, or your local indie bookstore.
@clhubes
I didn’t buy a lot of those things for baby. I bought them to help ME with baby. It’s okay to buy that stuff & other things for - mom. Why make it harder just to make a list? Did she not buy baby a car because walking 10 miles to the park in the snow carrying him was good? Sigh.
@clhubes
My parents subscribed to the “eat what you get & don’t throw a fit/go to your room plan.” I know now most was about money being tight. There were weird 70/80s adult-y foods that were just served. Always cereal. My mom also went through a weird health food kick. Carob. Nut milk.
Announcing the Long List for The SmokeLong Quarterly Award for Flash Fiction 2022, chosen by a team of 17 staff from 1476 entries. Huge congratulations to these writers. Thank you to everyone who trusted us with your work.
With big help from my teenager & an 80s linen blouse I saved, I was transported into my book cover. With code MOM25, you can save 25% off my book & all the wonderful word west titles, today only. DM me for signed copies & book swag. Happy Mother's Day!🐠
Thank you to Owen and Maura for believing in me to co-edit. Fair warning, two of my quirkier flashes are forthcoming in the next issue. Now that I've kept dinner from burning and caught up on Twitter, I'm looking forward to reading everyone's submissions starting 6/1!
I know I do these things quickly. Amy Barnes will be Gone Lawn's new co-editor, starting June 1. She appears in the upcoming issue, and also comes at Maura's high recommendation. Welcome, Amy!
@amygcb
Managing even 300 words has felt muddy this year. Seeing my wacky little title on the LL for such a lovely comp means so much. 😍 Hugs & commiserations & congrats to my fellow long listers!
Many congratulations to all 50 writers longlisted in our 25th Award! Confirmatory emails with publication offer will be sent in the next couple of hours. And thank you to every one who entered. It was tough to select 50 from hundreds of excellent entries
In our BEST OF THE NET nomination for fiction,
@amygcb
weaves a whirlwind of wordplay & otherworldly images into this single-sentence story about returning to old haunts & finding a dreamscape only distantly familiar.
Fireflies snuck into the symphony hall tonight.
As the kids played Williams, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and Doppler, tiny flying lights flickered in the balcony. I already was tearing up with goosebumps on my arms & now will hold the music & the fireflies in my heart.
@mollyfleck
The Nashville library is awesome plus the Brentwood one has talking trees, book benches, & a fireplace. They are such an oasis in warm and cold weather.
Sometimes the most unexpected things happen during the most ordinary things. Thank you to
@trampset
for this nomination (my first for BSF) as I drove my teenager to school. ♥️🎉
As I drown in college essays and days of rain, seeing my "Drowning on Main Street" flash on this list is a December bright spot. Congrats to the LL, SL & my fellow finalists and thank you to the SLQ readers & editors. I'm looking forward to reading all the stories. That cover!😘
Announcing the Finalists for The SmokeLong Quarterly Award for Flash Fiction 2022! Congratulations to Marcus Tan, Scott Pomfret, Luke Sutherland, Oyinkansola Sofela, Noémi Scheiring-Oláh, Amy Cipolla Barnes, Jack Bedrosian, Pat Jameson, Alexandra Karaim, and Lisa Thornton. 🎉🎉🎉
@todgoldberg
The person who selfishly bought and released 99 red balloons—beginning the helium shortage, shorting out the electricity in the strip mall and ruining Timmy’s fire truck party because his mom had to buy blue balloons instead.
Congratulations to everyone on the Wigleaf Top 50 list & longlist! Such a surprise to see my tiny flash "Angela's Wake" on the LL. Thanks to
@Spartan_Lit
&
@RossMcMeekin
for publishing it & to the
@wigleaf
crew. It's lovely to see so many names/stories I know/love on both lists!
The
@Wigleaf

@mollygaudry
and the Wigleaf Top 50 Crew! Such lovely writing here:
@fklein907
We went regularly to a restaurant w/candy & gum machines. I told my youngest I didn't have change, ONE time. We often got candy as we left. He told several strangers I didn't have ANY money & he was hungry. They gave him change. He ate it all & had chipmunk cheeks of candy & gum.
@clhubes
I was in a super-long grocery store line (pre-snow) last week. A family was snacking on bags out of chips out of the box. The toddler smiled & offered me one. Pre-kids, I had different thoughts than as a mom whose errands took 20 minutes extra paying for 1/2 a bag of goldfish.
My acceptance email from
@susurrusmag
bolstered my tired self with its kind words. It's also a lit mag for writers in the American South which makes it even more wonderful.❤️Get ready, y'all!
Love the
@FracturedLit
team and its focus on flash and micros. We might read and publish small fiction but the submitters and team are giants! It’s been an honor to be part of Fractured’s first year — looking forward to 2021.
These may be the 100 words that get me struck by lightning. ⚡️Thank you to
@NFFDNZ
for choosing my micro for the shortlist. Love these weeks in June celebrating flash!
This very best of good boys passed away a month ago. He loved us all being home more the past few years including for Taco Tuesday - with hats. A gift to us for nearly 14 years. His furry sister from another mister & mother is still bereft, as are we. 😍
I’ve counted many words in 2020 - 50, 100, 300, 500. This last fiction blew past 1K. I failed at doing a year-end rejections & acceptances count. 2020 has had so many good & bad numbers. As the year ends, know that you count — as people, writers, humans.
I was swamped & couldn't read for the
@nationalflashfd
this year, but did toss a tiny story into the waters. And it has floated 🌊. "The Minister of Loneliness isn't taking appointments" will appear at 16:50 (BST) on Saturday, the 15th of June. A big thank you to the team!
@rzschinderman
@rachsyme
This! That was a such a passing comment. Like "I went to the swap meet and bought counterfeit dresses and sold them for twice as much and then started my own team of underpaid sewers to replicate the knock-offs -- no big deal, it was a wonderful thing that helped people."
An unexpected hot air balloon at school drop-off, close enough to see people waving and the flame. My first Bath long listing in a LONG time. Serendipity on a Friday morning!
Congrats, commiserations, thanks to the Bath organizers & a hot air balloon picture for Friday.
this nonfiction flash is poetic and dense. amy barnes (
@amygcb
) killed it.
from the first line, “a car the size of a house rams our house the size of a house,” i was hooked.
the lives and metal of a cul-de-sac fold in on itself in “divorced”
One good thing about having teenagers who sleep during the day: I was still up to get a late-night
@MolotovLitZine
acceptance! My surreal flash will be up in a week or so. I'm not sure if the words, the acceptance or the flash seem more surreal now. :)
Love book mail with my name on it! 💗 When I asked Casie if my petite chapbook could be pink to match my full collection — she delivered. Free with pre-orders now, but I’ll do something extra with my author copies once pre-orders are done. Check out all the Belle Point books! 💗
Check out our latest Prose Series release! We love these little micro-chaps. This month features two additional stories by Amy Cipolla Barnes
@amygcb
. Prose
#13
is available to buy individually OR will be included for free with CHILD CRAFT pre-orders, due out September 5.
I love being part of "new" lit mags but there is also something about an old school, at-an-old school lit mag acceptance that thrills my literary heart. My flash "Ferry Tales" will be in the 128th issue, Movements & Mutations, of The Mitre (1st issue 1893!) at
@UBishops
.
I've finally accepted there are stages to my writing that don't involve me actually writing. Today is one of those days. I have the honor of helping to discover & publish other writers - their brilliant flashes of words & phrases that we hope surprise & inspire you too.
After uber cautious years, boosted teenager tested +. HS has one teacher at hospital. So many teachers out some kids haven’t had an English teacher this semester. The HS likely remote tomorrow. School response: must move basketball games to tonight. And let’s ban books. So livid.
Thank you Walmart for sharing this super wonderful portable coffin bathtub and no — I won’t be buying one of the faulty other brands now that were tempting me. Your work here is done. This was truly an unexpected find.
When you’ve known your spouse for 1/2 your life — it’s the “magnetic arrows/handles on the garage door” anniversary. I couldn’t find ones as fancy as on the church doors. I say it looks a little suburban-gothic, he says dungeon. 💒
@AngryBlackLady
I was almost recovered from the horse & the equally-brutal “they look like big, good, strong hands, don’t they?” & then one of my first “adult” (19) movies hit - type 1 diabetic loves pink, has dream wedding & baby - still DIES even w/Dolly Parton, Sally Field & Daryl Hannah. 😥
I was a big slacker in my Smokelong Summer groups as school ramped back up. Thank you to my patient & much more productive group members for your awesome feedback. Today, I found out my wacky little CNF submission made the semi-finalist list! 😍
When every day feels like Monday, I've finally had a good one with two acceptances. A lockdown micro for the
@NFFDNZ
flash flood in June; I'll be video-reading for the 2nd scary time in a month (!) And a mother-themed flash found its home at
@BanditFiction
.
@ambernoelle
In Tennessee, there are multiple Jennifer Petersens who find *dirty* book passages, disseminate them to their buddies, bring them to school board meetings & read them aloud in loud, angry voices. Including a passage (w/accompanying poster) on how male seahorses give birth.
@margotwood
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang author wrote James Bond books. Although as an adult, Fleming’s writing does feel similar and dark in both YA and adult books.
A little stomach surreality first thing in the morning.👛Big thanks to Matt for seeing something in this tiny tale. And congrats to my fellow long and short listers - such wonderful company to be in. 😍
Today's shortlisted story is "Digestion" by
@amygcb
. Congratulations, Amy! An intriguing piece that slips sideways into the surreal in order to hold a mirror up to the world.
@ambernoelle
I fainted one time from heat stroke. Kid stayed with me. Held on tight to her snack. When I came to, the first thing she asked was for me to open that bag of chips. 😆
@MegStEsprit
My teenager can’t wear shorts to school because she’s tall & has giraffe legs. I bought an assortment at Target & not one pair was in code. But — no one has to wear a mask or be taught non-existent CRT so all is good.
Writing hive mind — I need an onomatopoeia word for the sound a bullet makes when it hits glass filled with fluid or a metal can. I’m coming up short. Not a description, the sound word. Anyone? Thanks in advance!
My personal rule: if I’m submitting I should be reading somewhere too. Being a 1st reader or editor gives a different perspective. Seeing the talent that isn’t accepted is eye-opening. I get rejected a lot, but I also have to reject too. Thousands of times. It hurts both ways.
like once a week I see a whole thread of responses about how many times you get rejected before stopping submitting to a journal and I kinda just fundamentally don't understand the question
The final book proofing stage. Close reading for missing commas & page number matches. It’s exciting & stressful as I don’t trust the way I read words I know by heart. What do I spy amongst the words & numbers? Art created by the talented
@lumchanmfa
just for my little stories!😍
After a week+ of being snowed in, seeing my title on this list is a bright spot. Thanks to the hard-working judges. Good luck to the other very intriguing titles on the list!
LONGLIST DAY IS HERE! Congratulations to everyone whose story made it! All titles automatically qualify for publication in our online anthology later this spring. **Please DO NOT reveal which title on the list is yours, as it will disqualify your entry**
I’m a proponent of labeling tiny fiction - check out the dribbles & drabbles in The Dribble Drabble Review spring issue! This was born in a
@wordwestpress
class, inspired by a NYTimes “What’s going on in this picture?” - a great place for visual prompts.
The benefits of preordering from
@BellePointPress
: I received
@amygcb
‘s CHILD CRAFT today, 10 days before the official release date, not to mention Prose Series
#13
for free! (Matching sandals not included, though you can order a mug!)
Waking up in the States to learn my flash was long-listed! Honored to be included in such a great group of writers and love seeing the flash form celebrated.
It was still dark outside and what do I see? My title still on the short list! Thank you
@JanusLiterary
judges. Congratulations and good luck to everyone on the short list!
SHORTLIST DAY IS HERE! Congratulations, all! These titles are still in the running for our top three prize winning spots. It's ok to say if your story is on the list, but **please DO NOT reveal which title is yours, as it will disqualify your entry.**
@ambernoelle
Soaps w/grandma. After school specials. Liquid plastic for blowing bubbles. Love Boat & Fantasy Island with my older cousins. The 1st movie I saw in the theater was Bambi & then my parents took us to The Jazz Singer & a 3-hour long war movie. Riding in back window shelf of car.
There are things I imagined happening when I wrote a book. Being on a physical bookstore shelf was a big one, maybe *the* biggest. I've been staring at that slash of pink all morning. Independent bookstores and small presses are awesome.
@BellePointPress
is doing big things! 🩷
