Palo Alto's certainly not the only school district struggling with tough issues, but its last couple of school board meetings have been a powerful example of a divided community that's struggling to discuss polarizing and sensitive issues, including how to deal with a mistake a board member made that had unintended repercussions on a district employee. Last night a resolution to effectively censure that board member, Rowena Chiu, ended up getting tabled. Instead, Chiu herself suggested that the board only vote changing her committee assignments, which had been part of the original resolution (which Chiu said was intended to humiliate her). What happens next... will include more very tough conversations. But over these last two board meetings it became apparent that those conversations need to happen, not just among school district board members but in the community. SO many voices don't feel heard, on all sides of the issues that have divided Palo Alto. Trump at the Superbowl was soundly booed and hissed. Heard clearly international coverage and commented on in multiple countries. US TV networks overlayed canned 'cheers' instead.
