This is just to say
I have said no
To the thing
You wanted me
To do for free
and which
you were probably
hoping
I’d think was an opportunity
Forgive me
I am too busy
And it is
Not a good use of my time
The 8 year old had art class after school today & he wanted me to share what he did, since so many people liked his owl painting. This 🍎 & 🍐 was done with pastels & I was pretty much blown away when he showed me.
City officials in Savannah, Georgia say it’s no laughing matter that someone glued googly eyes to a Revolutionary War monument. Now they’re looking for the culprit behind it.
Today was a special day, as the 4 year old met his baby brother, who was born on Wednesday. Hadn’t planned to give birth during a global pandemic, but what can you do? We’re well & hugely grateful to the wonderful

He goes to an art class a couple of times a month, but he draws or paints pretty much every day & looks up techniques etc. He really loves it ❤️
I’m going to do a little thread about breastfeeding because I imagine some people might think that the KLM policy that so many are tweeting about is just a fuss about nothing, but it’s actually really important that mothers feel *supported* - not just *permitted* - to breastfeed.
Erroneous & disingenuous accusations of antisemitism cannot be allowed to shut down legitimate criticism of a nation slaughtering & starving tens of thousands of innocent people. Solidarity with Jairo.
@ProfDaveAndress
He tried to say that he was actually talking about dads taking their kids swimming, but last thing I checked, no one’s showering naked in communal showers in front of kids at the swimming pool… 🤔
When I first decided to put my title on my Twitter handle a few years back, I worried that it was pretentious, but every time some random man criticises a woman with a PhD for using ‘Dr’, it makes me happy that I have it right there where the dickheads can see it.

Just heard someone say that perhaps Sunak is purposefully allowing UK supermarkets to run out of veg so that he won’t have to prove he can outlive a lettuce, and in any other timeline I would dismiss that as ridiculous, but…
This is so disingenuous & disappointing. At first you were horrified by LARB, but instead of taking a stand, you made it MRO’s problem, telling
@ISASaxonists
to publish her review. When it was pointed out that 2 reviews from you were not needed (bc unethical) you disappeared
What I am not going to do with it is potentially expose academic colleagues who are clearly going through it and get stick from racists on here constantly to more negative attention because of a book review (????)
Just gave a lecture on the Conquest of Mexico. I questioned the euro-centric view, so often presented (Cortés leading a small band of conquistadors against a huge force of Aztecs) & if you think I’m above dragging the public dissemination of BAD HISTORY, you don’t know me at all.
Got a call from nursery to say that EVERY SINGLE ONE of the staff in my toddler’s room has had a positive LTF, so he’ll be home until further notice. SUPER GLAD THAT WE’RE DROPPING ALL RESTRICTIONS TO SAVE THE ARSE OF A NARCISSIST… BECAUSE CLEARLY COVID HAS TOTALLY GONE NOW 🙄🤬
Why should we give a tiny little rat’s arse what Holly Valance has to say about politics? Her terrible opinions are based on wanting to protect the rich because she is married to a billionaire, so of course she is an awful right wing garbage person.
@GeorginaAdlam
If I were her, I would never be able to show my face in public again. Her lack of shame & self awareness needs to be studied. It’s quite something.
A BBC producer told me (when I was reluctant to do a thing, because I was worried I wasn’t enough of an expert) that a man with half my experience would say yes in a heartbeat, and since then I have always asked myself - when an opportunity presents itself - what would a man do?
So many people have tweeted about this, and there have been loads of threads written about it, so I can’t imagine that the authors of this book haven’t seen it… but they remain silent, which is so incredibly disappointing.
I actually was approached to write a review of this book at the end of last year--- a review I did write & it was blocked bc it was an honest review. Some shady things from the editors.
My review *IS* coming out and it's not whitewashed which is what this incestuous club wants.
Absolutely over the moon to have been awarded a BA/Leverhulme Small Grant for my project, ‘Challenging Colonial Narratives’. I’ll be undertaking research in Seville & Mexico for my next book, and hosting research seminars & producing podcasts. Can’t wait to get started! 🥳
Just watched

& it is so brilliant how he turned the tables on the media & owned his story, while making it ABUNDANTLY clear that he wasn’t ashamed & would not apologise. Because why should he? Then he immediately released Outside as a massive fuck you. HERO.
@FernRiddell
@drkatedevlin
I can’t get over the fact that they believed him over her re them being in a relationship, despite all the other women who’d reported him for stalking... and then actually fined *her* for wasting their time. I mean, WTF? It goes way beyond incompetence. That poor girl.
If I wrote a review & found out I had been brought in because a woman of colour had been asked first, but her review had been deemed to critical & was dropped in favour of me - because I was seen as a sure thing for a good review - I would ask for that review to be pulled.
If I were Naomi Wolf & I believed in those time-travel enabling nanopatticles, I would definitely get the jab so I could go back & correct that crappy book I wrote before anyone found out what a total charlatan I was
If I wrote a book & found out a WoC had been asked to review it, but had their review rejected because it wasn’t positive enough, and was dropped for a WW, who’d already given the book a glowing review elsewhere - so probably shouldn’t review it again anyway - I’d be horrified.
It’s been a funny old day. It’s the 17th anniversary of my dad’s death, so I was prepared for it to be fairly crappy… but out of the blue, I received the loveliest email
@lottelydia
“I aM bEiNg SiLeNcEd”
“But, you’re on Newsnight...”
“sEe hOw I aM bEiNg De-pLaTfOrMeD”
“You are literally on the BBC”

I’m giving 3 conference papers this summer. I will script them all for the following reasons:
1. To ensure I keep to time.
2. To ensure I cover all the relevant points without forgetting anything.
3. To ensure my arguments are clear & properly developed.
4. To help calm my nerves
Ladies, if he:
- Doesn’t follow you on Twitter
- Isn’t interested in your research
- Thinks everyone cares about Shakespeare
- Is always emailing your friends
- Expects you to be in awe of his ‘genius’
- Is rude & abusive
He’s not your man, he’s Al*n Tar*ca
Excited to get my copy of
@HistoryToday
which features a piece I wrote about challenging the Eurocentric narrative of the conquest of Mexico & why it’s so problematic that 500 years on from the Fall of Tenochtitlan, the focus is still on Cortés & his “small band” of conquistadors

What mystifies me about the trans moral panic is that women outnumber trans women by a ratio so large I can’t calculate it. Transwomen are a minority that’s been excluded, abused, beaten & killed for centuries. It’s the ultimate “they are more scared of us than we are of them”
The whole thing is just so unethical, but even worse than that, this behaviour feeds into the far right. When those who proclaim to be anti-racist and/or woke allow this stuff to happen, it just helps to vindicate white supremacists.
Is anyone else finding that some days are perfectly fine & then other days are just horrible for no apparent reason? Like, nothing has changed - each day is essentially the exact same as the last - and yet some days it’s just so much more difficult.
5 year old, covering one ear as I tell him to listen carefully...
Me: “What are you doing? I’m trying to talk to you!”
5yo: “I’m covering the out ear”
Me: “The what?”
5yo: “Daddy says that things go in through one ear & out the other, so I’m covering the out ear so it’ll stay in”
Those “this is how I write 5 million books a year” tweets are the new “this is how I save £30K a year”, but instead of living rent & bill-free with your parents; making no contribution to their household, you let your less senior colleagues take on all the teaching & admin. EASY.
Good morning
@HHFTnhs
A lot of people are rightly concerned that this was the reaction of Russell Simmonds to the
#Dispatches
documentary about Russell Brand. He works in theatre in your Basingstoke hospital & I for one, would be deeply uncomfortable being treated by this man.
So, let me get this straight, the Tories are now campaigning on:
1. fascism
2. “I swam in shit, so you can swim in shit. What’s the problem?”
3. “Just eat the cheap beans, peasants!”
The baby smiled a few times in his sleep today. I realise it may well have just been wind or whatever, but I’m taking it as a tiny win for because it’s been a difficult one & I’m absolutely shattered.
The idea that criticising & pointing out (quite frankly) blatant racism is rude - and more offensive than the racism itself - is of course ridiculous, but it’s also an incredibly pervasive device, that is used constantly to silent PoC for voicing their concerns & objections.
And the thing is, if it were just one idiot complaining, that would be crap but manageable. If an ACTUAL AIRLINE is supporting & condoning this stupid opinion over your actual HUMAN RIGHT to do the VERY NECESSARY THING, then surely you can see how much more difficult it makes it.
Watching
#BECKHAM
& I had forgotten what an absolute arsehole Glen Hoddle was, and that he got sacked as England manager for saying that disabilities were karma…
Watching BBC news right now. They are calling the destruction of Gaza & massacre of its people, “the consequences of war”. Absolutely not. The rules of war are not being followed. This is genocide.
I know most of you don’t follow me for my opinions on Israel-Palestine. But I just can’t turn away from it. It is the worst atrocity of my adult life - 2m people locked in a small area, getting bombed and starved with nowhere to go. Truly horrific. I feel compelled to speak out.
Utterly appalled by what
@ProfSunnySingh
,
@monisha_rajesh
&
@chimenesuleyman
have had to deal with over the last few days for rightfully calling out a book that uses racist tropes & stereotypes to describe CHILDREN.
@FernRiddell
@drkatedevlin
Who’d go to the police & risk them messing up an investigation & therefore angering your attacker/stalker further, knowing that this is how they’d treat you/handle the case??
This has been doing the rounds & it shows a lack of understanding of sacrifice; religion & early modern executions, which is a shame as it makes a good point, albeit in an arse about face kinda way: our view of history *is* incredibly Eurocentric, but the tweet is still bollocks.
Imagine having all that money; knowing how much good you could do with it, but preferring instead to get into a dick swinging contest with another space wanker
So hopefully this thread explains why it’s actually a hell of a lot easier to avert your eyes if you’re offended by the sight of breastfeeding, than it is for a mother to not do it, or cover up. I’m not even going to mention why a mother shouldn’t have to move elsewhere to do it
Registration closes 5pm (GMT) tomorrow for the FREE, ONLINE conference, ‘The Fall of Tenochtitlan 500 Years On: Challenging Narratives of Conquest & Commemoration’
(3pm-8:30pm GMT, 12th & 13th August). Featuring keynotes by
@londonmikmaq
& Camilla Townsend
Attitudes are changing, thankfully, but when you’ve been up ALL NIGHT LONG & you’re mentally & physically exhausted, & in pain, the very last thing you need is to feel like you can’t do this VERY NECESSARY THING without some idiot complaining about it & making you feel unwelcome.
So why is it important to say that you “support”, rather than “permit” breastfeeding? Because feeling self conscious & like others disapprove is just another reason - from the long list I’ve just given (physical & mental exhaustion, pain etc.) that puts mothers off breastfeeding.
@HISTORYUK
Right... pretty big coincidence that all those well known Nazi numbers just happen to coincide with significant dates in his life. Totally believable, that
Since then MRO has had to deal with 2 weeks of racist attacks - on her expertise & even her identity. Why would you want those racists to be vindicated by your silence? Why wouldn’t you want to distance yourself from that despicable behaviour by offering her some support?
So, if KLM are concerned about the comfort of their other - non breastfeeding passengers - over those who are doing so, they should probably consider what would be more of an annoyance: a screaming baby in distress, or the potential to briefly see a mother’s nipple.
Hello, I’m a historian of Mexico. You may know me from my greatest hits, including: “Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz wasn’t persecuted by the Inquisition”; “the Aztecs probably didn’t think Cortés was a god” & “the Maya weren’t aliens; nor did they predict the world would end in 2012”
Hello I'm a medieval sex historian. You may know me from my greatest hits, including: "Yes, they did have sex. A lot", "Yes I have already seen the BnF manuscript of the phallus tree", and "Your kink is neither new nor particularly interesting to me. I can't feel joy anymore".
I’m not sure who needs to hear this, but it is possible to be an atheist *and* respect the fact that other people hold religious beliefs.😱 SHOCKING, I KNOW! It’s even possible to not behave like an “edgy” teen caricature by making the most banal, public statement on a holy day!
I’ve never been good at crafts. I usually end up abandoning projects after getting bored &/or frustrated. But last night I finished crocheting a scarf for a friend at work who did a lot to help me while I was having a tough time. I’m proud of myself for seeing it through 💪
Remember. There’s been zero - ZERO - investigation into Russian interference in UK because as we now know, the govt ‘actively avoided’ looking.
So these US reports are closest we get. That & work by UK journalists - half of whom are being sued for undertaking this work.
We need to normalise calling out shitty behaviour at conferences. This is a deeply unpleasant story, but I wish I could say that this kind of thing was unusual. Sadly it’s not. I’ve personally experienced less extreme but similar bullying after giving papers a number of times (1)
My MLA horror story
cw: suicide is mentioned
The content warning makes my story sound dramatic; it is not, not really. My horror story is about academic bullying. And I share because this week is MLA, & b/c you might see academic bullying and I ask you to stand up & intervene.
This is the most inadequate non-apology that addresses neither the injured party -
@ISASaxonists
- nor the harm caused. Utterly shameful.
#BrightAgesSoWhite
Breastfeeding is really hard. It does get easier, but the first 3 months are especially gruelling. It can be incredibly painful; it is physically exhausting & it can be utterly relentless. In the early days, each feed can take an hour or more & be required every couple of hours.
Some academics seem to think they could easily slip into school teaching, like it’s an easy option & not a really challenging job that requires very specific skills that you don’t necessarily acquire in HE. It’s so arrogant, but also, kids deserve better than being your plan B
Fancy listening to a podcast on this drizzly Sunday?
