We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our dear student and friend, Abdullah Khattak (MBBS ‘24), who met with a motorcycle crash earlier today. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his family and friends.
Thought I could share this epic picture here too.
I met the productive guru, the YouTuber doctor wevedefinitelyallseenatonepointofourlives and probably the fastest typer I will ever know, Ali! 2 weeks after seeing him I am still hoping his productiveness radiates to me.
I just ended my elective in Palliative Medicine, a few things I learnt;
-importance of thinking of what you say before you say it
-polypharmacy👎
-I've seen patient's faces light up on seeing their doctor walk in. Be compassionate
-phone & notes can wait, listen to your patient
Hey

I’ll been uploading quick videos on different syndromes for the next few weeks! 🗓️

Roughly 1600km covered, 133L of petrol not burnt, and 305kg of CO2 not emitted.

Things I learnt in Specialty Medicine:

educate educate educate. diabetes is no longer only a rich persons disease. For example, fresh juices generally speaking are healthy but with someone on anti diabetic meds it’s best to avoid em. Also examine the foot pls

OBGYN done ✅
From pre-rounding, attending rounds, then heading to clinics/OR+classes in between for 5 days a week, 8 weeks long- this rotation is definitely one of the toughest. But then also one of the most interesting. An amazing mix of surgery and medicine.
Experienced the

EV-3 today. Got to AKU in 45min & got back home in 51min.
It was quick, reliable (didn’t have to wait much for a bus) & extremely conveniently routed for me. Not having to drive+economical fare makes it a no brainer.
So happy to have this in Karachi
I had a really happy moment for me this week:
during my outpatient clinic I took two follow up histories of an elderly couple & as they met the consultant, they started to praise me to the doctor on how nice & properly I talked to them, after years of coming the the clinic.
EM+FM ✅
I would be lying if I said I enjoyed overnight calls, but I guess it’s all part of the package.
Clinics are amazing. One thing I’ve learnt to change in my interactions with a patient is a simple few questions on their mood & mental wellbeing.
Yesterday marked the end of my 2 months long Paediatric rotation!

Seeing smol children being ill is not for the faint of hearts 😞
Roughly 5 weeks later, I’ve the end product!
I can’t tell if it’s smarter buying a 50/- bundle from the vegetable shop but all I know is that this is 100% chemical free and full of aroma
A patient who I saw today said he was an "agriculturist". I'm like is that an office job or something. And I was then introduced to the fancy way of saying zamindar
I was so pleased seeing these wooden spoons in the student lounge today. The gradual but eventual transition to a greener

Saw a young man from a neighboring country in the clinic today and I cannot thank Pakistan enough for the safety and stability we have living here (in comparison).
I double mask, got the booster, have no symptoms or exposure (surprisingly) and yet was worried sick getting a covid test done. Thank goodness I’m negative.
Please do your part, going out and parties can wait, karachi eat isn’t too fun, the positivity rate is way too high 😷
it’s been months (probably over a year) since I left my class WhatsApp group and I can’t thank myself enough for taking that step. I avoid all unwanted tension I used to get from the group
With what's happening in

, I pray for the safety of the minorities, the women and children and every innocent civilian there.
Seeing the news develop so fast-the presidential palace being taken over, people fleeing makes me sick to the stomach
imagine leaving home exactly an hour early for class and arriving 20 mins late for a journey that normally takes 30mins max. that's Karachi in a nutshell
The traffic police people stopped me today for having factory tinted windows stating I need permission from the hOmE dEpArTmEnT. I just asked the police if I looked stupid to him and he let me go.

was an exceptional surgeon & humanbeing. He took my AKU entry interview 3 years ago & would always remember the details of the conversation we had. We also bonded over our same name!
May his loved ones find peace with this loss
Today we've lost a very special

, beloved Prog. Director of Surgery, who passed away this morning from natural causes. An exceptional bariatric surgeon, mentor, & alumni beloved by all. May his loved ones find the strength to bear this loss.
I am half way through my general surgery rotation and here are a few things I’ve learnt:
1)The importance of a good history. A doctor can make a diagnosis seconds into listening to a student presenting a hx. So cool.
2)Resting well, eating well and being covid free is all v imp
to think the students had to pay 6k for this test and still have a boatload of complaints is just sad
The least they can do is release the answer key

Today I had a few sessions in the laboratory as part of my ID rotation and one thing I have to say; holy cow, there is a LOT of work that they do that goes unnoticed. All your blood cultures don’t magically show up on a pdf with the results.
So glad I got to witness all of this
It’s always such a humbling experience knowing that the videos

been watched by, and found useful by hundreds and thousands of irl people across Pakistan. Always so nice meeting them.

Karachi really does have a litter problem

So you had weeks and weeks in advance to prepare for the test, knowing it would likely take place in August. And now as the test is 2 weeks away, y’all start complaining?
You still have so much time, parhlo pls 👍
-the medical ethics you learn varies so differently irl (esp in the 🇵🇰 context)
-psychological support for the family is essential
-nursing care is so important
-assessing a family's (& pt's) knowledge of PM, and further educating them about it is important

I went to a cousin's nikkah today, and was impressed by the turn out-dozens of people were there. Minutes later I find out there were 9 other grooms lol. It was a mass-nikkah.
What’s with people who don’t use the indicator as they drive? Do their finger(s) hurt flicking the switch? I’m sure they know of its existence and when they should be used.
My time spent with the doctors & nurses at the Psychiatry department during the rotation has been the most memorable.
From taking an hour-long initial history to seeing a manic outburst the importance & prevalence of any psychiatric illness in Pakistan has been brought to light
Can we get them a flood light? Billions are being put into the construction of the red line track but for what seems to be an important part of construction (pouring of concrete for the pillars) they are using their flash light on their phone 😰

I need to start disguising myself or learn how to not talk to someone I randomly meet in a random hallway at university. I spent 30 minutes today talking to peers doing their electives at uni, one from Multan, the other from Peshawar. It was nice meeting them but 30 minutes 😭
the one day i come prepared for iftaari at uni, I go see a pt (im on call) I come back and the library where I kept everything including my money is locked
“Shams Bhai” has been taking pictures

for 35 yrs+ (including at my graduation 25 yrs ago!) What a thrill it was to return the favour as he is honoured with a University Long Service award 🥇- Thanks 🙏 Shamsuddin Ahmed for making us look so good across 3 decades ….
Anaesthesia ✅
And that wraps up all the rotations for me in my 4th Year!
Loved the hands on involvement through out the rotation, and really appreciated how enthusiastic most of the residents were in getting us involved & to teach us!
