For @TIME , I wrote about my realization that my family’s land ownership meant the dispossession of the Native people who had enslaved them. I tried to make it succinct enough to use in a classroom setting, to discuss the intersection of Black and Native history in the West.

I hope @jordanpeele isn’t aware his camp told academics (incl. me) they couldn’t compensate us for prep or travel time for this bcus it'd make the info we presented “biased.” That's actually not how disseminating academic knowledge works. So I said no.

While Trump’s administration was defaming the 1619 Project, the Cherokee Nation was formulating a plan to tell the story of the Black & mixed-race people its tribal members enslaved. Observe reconciliation in progress. Other nations (Native & otherwise) should follow suit.

#OTD in 1866 the Chickasaw and Choctaw Nations agreed to stop holding my ancestors, and others like them, as slaves. A treaty with the U.S--not the Emancipation Proclamation or the 13th Amendment--freed them. This is a different emancipation story. But one that is still important

And just like many Americans recently learned that Juneteenth celebrates Black freedom AFTER Texan slaveholders had to be forced to honor emancipation, you should know that the Choctaws & Chickasaws fought to maintain slavery. The U.S. had to send agents to reinforce this treaty.

Wilma Mankiller was a groundbreaking Cherokee leader, no doubt. But as we honor her today, I think it’s essential to consider her legacy in its entirety, warts and all. Isn’t that what we Native folks ask of white Americans with their heroes? Please read my words w/ an open heart

I probably shouldn't open this can of worms again, but I can't get over the fact that I have to experience the joy of seeing the increase in Black and Native history jobs while also witnessing the appalling shrinkage of jobs (especially tenure track jobs) in the field as a whole

Highest rate of vaccination! Because of our history--and present circumstances--Native people have every right to be hesitant (even downright resistant) to any American health initiative. Yet, here we are setting an example for the rest of this country... again.

YES. Remember Indigenous Peoples today, but not as a monolith--rather, as a resilient, diverse group that deals with the effects of settler colonialism (like anti-Blackness and destructive ideas of identity) in varied ways, on a daily basis.

Nikole Hannah-Jones' saga with UNC has to represent the most sustained focus on tenure and its opacity by a large swath of non-academics in recent memory, right? I'm so glad it has a happy ending, but it's been so interesting to see mainstream news dissecting this topic.

In most traditional westerns, Native people served as villains and Black people were minor players, if present at all. In this predominantly Black world, I’m curious to see if Native people will make an appearance. We’ve already seen a Latino/Hispanic character. #HATM
