Absolutely thrilled to get my first jab of Taiwan's domestically developed Medigen vaccine today, the first day of its release!

今天我很開心因為我有在台灣第一個高端疫苗!#台灣加油 #高端

One photo to demonstrate the level of absurdity involved in the IOC’s rule against displays of statehood for Taiwan. This is not the ROC flag, just a towel. Shameful.
It has got to be real weird for aspiring grad students getting rejected for not having a paper seeing current grad students at top tier programs out here celebrating their first paper
The standards have changed so fast
Hello new followers!
I really didn't expect my tweet yesterday to resonate so much, but I'll be glad if it helps get a few more people vaccinated.
I'm just one patient, of course, but I haven't had any side effects so far, thankfully.
... many people are saying they are nervous because Medigen has not completed Phase III.
But you know, that means you're asking *someone* out there to get injected with a new vaccine and assume whatever risks there may be, for you.
To me, this is a moment I can step forward.
"It would be like the Chinese saying to us, look, we think Tasmania..."
No, it wouldn't be. Former Australian prime minister Paul Keating demonstrating his historical and strategic illiteracy on Taiwan. Kudos to
@FergusonNews
for challenging him.
Pelosi says Taiwan has shown the courage to move from authoritarianism to democracy on its own, and is a model for the region. Says she's not here to talk about China, she's here to talk about Taiwan.
Why did I volunteer to get Medigen?
I have confidence in the science of vaccines. I trust Taiwan's COVID response, and believe it is not in the long-term interest of the government to put out an unsafe or ineffective vaccine.
And I am willing to be an early subject...
It's really inspiring to see so many Taiwanese returning home to vote.
For their sake, I wish they could vote from abroad.
But their willingness to travel at great expense halfway around the world to make their voices heard is a testament to how important democracy is to them
"Separatist forces" is a Chinese propaganda term that refers to the roughly 90 percent of people in Taiwan that express no interest in unification with China. It seeks to villainize the simple wish of Taiwanese to continue governing themselves.
I can't with these useful idiots
.Today, the world has overwhelmingly adopted the One China policy. Only 13 of 193 UN member states recognise the ROC in Taiwan.
However, due to the continued provocations of the US in alliance with separatist forces in Taiwan, the island remains a source of tension and conflict.
It's kinda outrageous that
@duolingo
offers Klingon and High Valerian, but no option to learn Mandarin with traditional characters. This is not hard. It feels deliberate.
I'm thrilled to announce that I have accepted a position at the Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy & Astrophysics (ASIAA) as a Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow! I'm very much looking forward to continuing my work searching for exomoons in Taipei! (1/6)
I look forward to our lives getting back to normal as we all get vaccinated.
Pick the vaccine you're comfortable with... but for me, the real risk is going any longer without vaccination. I'm very happy this day has finally come.
We have seen way too much fear and fear-mongering about vaccines over the last year, and look where that's gotten us: a pandemic that continues to rage, with dangerous new variants emerging.
I feel safe here in Taiwan, with a robust COVID response and excellent health care.
If you think it's insane for the US to risk all out war with a nuclear superpower over Taiwan, you have to conclude it is also insane for China to start an all out war with a nuclear superpower over Taiwan.
But it's entirely within China's power to not invade a peaceful neighbor
Just was thinking about how in early 2020, as I was on the postdoc market, I had two job offers. One in Taipei. The other in Shanghai.
It's hard to fathom how different my life would be right now if I didn't get the offer from Academia Sinica.
Today's the day: I'm moving to
#Taiwan
! I'm excited and nervous. Months of planning and yet something can still go wrong. I'm still anticipating hiccups.
This thread will document the (hopefully) ~30 hour trip from my Mom's home in Virginia to the quarantine hotel in Taipei. 1/
My first day at Academia Sinica!
I *think* this is my desk... but honestly it's too good to be true so I'm kinda expecting someone to take it away from me 😬😬😬
Feels amazing and surreal to be back in an office
Today marks one year since I arrived in Taiwan!
It's been an amazing year, in an incredible city, in a breathtaking country, with awesome new friends, and the most delicious food. I'm hooked.
Thank you
#Taiwan
. I'm gonna stick around for a while :)
I just registered for my COVID-19 vaccine!!!!
Next Monday baby, they're jabbing me with that homegrown Medigen vaccine. First day of the rollout! #高端

I can understand western leftists being anti-war in the extreme. I can understand thinking US support for Taiwan is mostly self-interested.
Just spare me the high-minded bullshit about "One China". 24 million people on this island have a right to choose their own future.
PSA for my friends outside TW:
Anyone arguing "even Taiwanese support the One China policy" by citing the ROC constitution is deeply unserious and knows jack shit about the history and context of this place.
"Anti-imperialists" out here acting pretty fuckin imperialist rn
I JUST SUBMITTED MY DISSERTATION!
My sincere thanks (and sympathies!) to the brilliant astronomers who have agreed to serve on my committee. I can't wait to defend on August 5th.
And thanks to everyone who has helped me get here! It's a long list of folks.
I received an Academic Research Award from the Ministry of Science and Technology!
Proud to get this token of appreciation from the adopted home that I appreciate so much.
Anyone else have mixed feelings about buying Chinese Taipei merch?
Wanna support the team, can't really support the name... it just feels a bit weird propagating it. And as a foreigner here I also don't want people thinking I'm oblivious to the meaning. Thinking too much?
@LindseyGrahamSC
The joke is your unwavering support for the mad king who's talking about arresting political opponents and starting a civil war just this morning
Just filed my taxes for the first time in Taiwan. In and out of the office in 15 minutes. They had all my info, all I had to do was show my ID and health card, give them my phone number and bank account #.
Compared to the ludicrous system in the US it was an absolute delight.
Spare a thought for all the Taiwanese boys who got some tough news today. The country will be a little safer thanks to their sacrifice. I just hope a year in training and service is all we ever have to ask of them.
Taiwan's democratic system and political freedoms -- the inspiring bits and the ugly bits alike -- on full display this week. It's messy sometimes but I'm damn glad we have it.
There are already thousands by noon outside of the legislature, if it’s this large already on a weekday, I can only imagine how large it’ll be by evening. Many young people, as is not surprising
@lingosteve
@StateDeptSpox

China has interfered with vaccine acquisition. Taiwan has precious little overt international support. Taiwan is a critical supplier of computer chips for US companies. And this is 0.5% of the vaccines the US has pledged to donate globally.
I've discovered that whenever Brits insist that herb should be pronounced Herb "because it starts with an H!" , you can ask them how long 60 minutes is and watch their world come crashing down
2 PhD's in 2 weeks! Today, we celebrate the successful thesis of defense of Dr
@alexteachey
! As part my (apparently) new trend, I'd like to tell you a little bit about Alex and his thrilling thesis...
I'm hard pressed to think of any standard astro plot that is as arresting as an H-R diagram. Pick a field and it just falls right out of the Gaia data. Gorgeous.
Gave a 10-minute presentation entirely in Mandarin tonight for my last class of the semester and I have to say I pretty much nailed it.
Took a lot of preparation, but all the same it feels like a milestone.
Why is the framing never "China better be careful or they'll provoke the US into starting a war?"
Probably because we all know who would *start* a war in Taiwan.
Visits and meetings aren't a declaration of war. Missile attacks and invasions are.
This is very interesting. Taiwanese, like Canadians, value human diversity. This is very different from the Japanese, who seem more comfortable with homogeneity.

in San Francisco, I met with Chinese Taipei Minister Kung Ming-Hsin from the National Development Council to discuss ways to strengthen our already robust economic cooperation on critical issues, such as supply chains and clean energy.
@RachelRGonzalez
Funny how you erase Pete's sexual orientation as a groundbreaking moment for gay rights...
Also I don't know how well the "PoC can't catch a break from the media" angle holds up when our last president was African-American, and got glowing media coverage during the campaign.
@KiffinEileen
This usage is specific to text messaging, that's it. It evolved naturally with the technology, and late adopters missed the memo.
I assume the people freaking out in the replies mostly conform to the societal norm of answering the phone "hello" rather than "what do you want".
Numbering citations in the text (as some journals require) rather than using author+year format frankly sucks
I don't want to have to lose my place in the text every time there's a citation I want to look up. It's a huge pain, and obscures author recognition as well
A new phase of COVID mitigation has taken hold in Taiwan. No longer chasing COVID-zero, folks are still taking it seriously.
My friend group just learned of a possible exposure this past weekend. The word got round fast, and now everyone is testing themselves. You love to see it
Looks like the wumao and tankie clowns have found my tweet
I'm going to bed now in my adopted home, TAIWAN... looking forward to seeing what I have unleashed tomorrow when I log on to the free and open internet that we enjoy here. Here's wishing you all can get a life 🤡
I left New York yesterday, my home of 17 years. It was quite emotional, in no small part because I also had to leave behind someone very special. I'll miss everyone dearly.
Exciting times are ahead, but big changes are rarely easy.
Thanks for the memories NYC ❤️
Submitted my first single-author paper! And my first paper as a postdoc.
It's a scary feeling being out here without guardrails, but I'm pretty proud of this work. Fingers crossed for a friendly and constructive review.
I'm proud to release my new review article:
"Detecting and Characterizing Exomoons and Exorings"
a chapter in the forthcoming Handbook of Exoplanets, 2nd ed.
I hope it will serve as a valuable resource for folks wanting to get into this exciting work.
@EricRWeinstein
This is straw man hogwash dude
"Young kids today don't know how to think"
"Peer review only lets through established science"
As a scientist I can tell you, that's all total nonsense. We see revolutions in thinking, through peer review, every day.
This is really exciting news, a bit tainted by this awkward choice to refer to the "region of Taiwan". We all know why they did that.
Pride is about having the courage to be who you are, not who others want you to be
New
#exomoon
paper out today, and it's a couple of firsts for me: first as a postdoc, and my first single-author paper!
In this paper I examined observable, dynamical signatures of transiting exoplanets hosting multiple moons. First some background: 1/N
The situation in Haiti is insane. Competing claims to the prime ministership. Mercenaries from Colombia, seeking refuge at the Taiwanese embassy. Economic turmoil, gang violence, a raging pandemic, requests for US military intervention. Tom Clancy couldn't get away with all this.
Ridiculous and very disappointing.
@InterPride
should be standing up for the country that is standing up for gay rights, not pandering to the country that suppresses them.
Don't ask Taiwanese to pretend their own country doesn't exist. It's an insult.
Breaking: The team at WorldPride
#Taiwan
2025 announced that they will no longer organize the event in 2025 after the organization InterPride came back to ask the team to replace “Taiwan” with the city name “Kaohsiung” while reportedly doubting Taiwan’s ability ...
As covid starts to spread in Taiwan, it's becoming clear again that the government is providing very strong incentives to stay off their radar if you get sick.
Did you know most people in Taipei still cannot quarantine at home if they test positive?
It seems like there are...
@KiffinEileen
It became quite obvious that "No" meant something different than "No." So you can either adjust and communicate in a way that makes sense to your reader, or you can obstinately try to stick to the rules you learned for an entirely different medium, because the KiDs ArE wRoNg!!!
PAPER DAY!
In this new work,
@david_kipping
and I leverage the power of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to search for exomoon transit signals!
We achieved up to 97% detection accuracy, and then vetted 1880 KOIs in search of exomoons!

candidate alert: one planet in a survey of 70 exhibited an intriguing signature, but it's a good one: 4.8-sigma significance after an intensive barrage of tests. And yes, it's a huge body, a moon of ~2.6 Earth radii.

In Taipei, it appears that when a blind customer uses the MRT, not only are they escorted to the train, but their destination station is alerted and given their car number so that they can be met and escorted out at the other end
I love this place
It was such a delight chatting with
@ReeceAyersTW
at
@taiwanplusnews
about astronomy, life in the Universe, and Taiwan's role in global astro projects!
Thanks also to
@yuchenelai
for producing this really nice segment :)
As NASA prepares to launch a mission to find possible habitats for life in our solar system, we take a look at Taiwan's own contributions to space exploration.
On this episode of

to be our guide the stars.

Part of me isn't ready to go. I had so many plans for my last year in New York, all blown up by this damn pandemic and our historically shitty response. There will be no proper goodbyes.
The other part of me can't get there soon enough. A normal life awaits.
Super proud of my friends here in
#Taiwan
who are universally taking this uptick in cases seriously. No one complaining about a possible lockdown. Everyone's ready to do battle with this thing. We're in this together. I love this country.
We have a new paper out today digging a bit deeper into the Kepler-1625b exomoon candidate!
We've run lots of additional tests, and we address the recent paper from Kreidberg et al (KLB19). Since that's gotten some attention, let me start there: 1/n
I find Reuters' language re: Taiwan consistently terrible.
2nd paragraph: " '[28 fighters entered Taiwan's ADIZ]', the Chinese-claimed island’s government said."
Is it not also the Taiwanese-claimed island's government?
